See the file "WHATS.NEW" which accompanies this distribution
package for a list of the features which debut in this version of
The Word Search Creator.
PART 1.1.0 READ THIS DOCUMENTATION FROM WITHIN PROGRAM!
You may read this documentation from within the program while
you learn by pressing ALT-F1. When you return to the program,
your place in the documentation (or "bookmark") will be
remembered. When you return again to the documentation using ALT-
F1, you will be returned to the place you left off.
PART 1.2.0 THIS PROGRAM IS NOT FREE, AND REGISTRATION IS NOT
OPTIONAL!!!
If you received this program from a shareware distributor,
you must understand that what you received was the service of
copying and conveying to you a copy of The SPELLBOUND! Word Search
Creator. We, the creators of this program have not been
compensated by any distributors of this product. We only get paid
when you send in the registration fee after you find the program
useful to you. Registration is not optional. It is mandatory if
you continue to use the program beyond the 5 day evaluation
period. Continuing to use the program after this period without
registering is Software Piracy and a violation of our copyright.
This product is not disabled in any way so that you can make
a complete evaluation of the product. Please do not use this
gesture of kindness on our part to rob us of the payment to which
we are entitled. The ONLY difference between the shareware and
registered versions are the shareware messages as you enter and
exit the program to remind you of your obligation to register.
See "INDUCEMENTS TO REGISTER" below to see the great values
you will receive when you register the program with SPELLBOUND!
Software.
PART 1.3.0 BEWARE SPELLBOUND! SOFTWARE'S SUPER DUPER, NEW AND
IMPROVED, ALL PURPOSE SHAREWARE CURSE!
Before telling you about the curse, we want you to know that
the program has not been disabled in any way! There are no built
in limits or worms, and the program will continue to work when the
evaluation period has expired. The curse only applies to matters
of health and personal hygiene!
Because of those dishonest few who spoil it for the rest of
us, we at SPELLBOUND! Software alas, have been forced to succumb
to the time-worn device of cursing those who use our software
without registering. See "RUNNING THE WORD SEARCH CREATOR WITHOUT
PAYING FOR IT!" for dire warnings about this frightening curse!
Learn also the answer to the burning question, "Who is Weldon?"
We know what you're thinking, "Yeah, sure, EVERYBODY and his
brother has a curse. What makes yours so special?" Well, let's
put it this way... Is your scalp beginning to feel itchy? Does
your spouse exhibit signs of having a desire to hand out flowers
at the airport? Are you experiencing any discomfort in your gums?
Are you catching our drift? (Don't mess with us...)
PART 1.4.0 PRINTING THE INVOICE AND DOCUMENTATION
To print out the documentation, make sure that WORDSRCH.DOC
is in the current directory, on dot matrix printers, position the
printhead about 3 lines down the page, (it is formatted to 59
lines/page for laser printers) and Type: "COPY WORDSRCH.DOC PRN"
and press ENTER.
To print out an invoice to register your copy of The
Word Search Creator, make certain INVOICE.BAT is in the current
directory, turn on your printer and type: "INVOICE" and press
ENTER.
PART 2.0.0 LICENSING, LEGAL STUFF
PART 2.1.0 LICENSE AGREEMENT
Hereinafter, "THE SOFTWARE" shall refer to "The SPELLBOUND!
Word Search Creator" and "THE AUTHOR" shall refer to Kenneth R.
Casey, Jr.
This is a legal agreement between you, the end user, and THE
AUTHOR. By continuing to use the THE SOFTWARE, you are agreeing to
be bound by the terms of this agreement. If you do not agree to
the terms of this agreement, promptly destroy all copies of THE
SOFTWARE and any accompanying documentation.
THE SOFTWARE is owned by THE AUTHOR, and is protected by
United States copyright laws and international treaty provisions.
You may not reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble THE
SOFTWARE.
PART 2.2.0 SHAREWARE VERSION LICENSE PARTICULARS
THE AUTHOR grants to you the user, the right to evaluate a
single copy of the shareware version of THE SOFTWARE on a single
terminal connected to a single computer (i.e. with a single CPU)
for an evaluation period not to exceed 5 days. Under no
circumstances may you continue to use your copy beyond the 5 day
evaluation period unless you have paid the registration fee to
SPELLBOUND! Software. Use of the software past the evaluation is
illegal and a violation of our copyright! If after 5 days you
determine that you do not wish to pay the registration fee, you
must completely remove the installation from your system. You may
feel free to distribute the entire shareware distribution package
to acquaintances, user groups or to shareware distributors.
It may be freely distributed by shareware distributors for a
reasonable distribution fee not to exceed $6.00 as long as it is
clearly represented that THE SOFTWARE is not "freeware" nor is it
free. There is no need to request our permission to distribute
the package as long as you clearly represent that the program is
not free.
This program is not disabled or time limited in ANY way. The
only difference between the shareware and REGISTERED versions is
the lack of shareware messages.
Under no circumstances may the shareware or registered
version of "THE SOFTWARE" be networked, or copies used on multiple
computers simultaneously without paying for the number of copies
required.
PART 2.3.0 REGISTERED VERSION LICENSE PARTICULARS
You may not make any copies of the REGISTERED version beyond
the licensed number of installations except to make a maximum of
two backups for archival purposes. Your backup copies may not be
run, but must be used solely for the purpose of replacement in the
event your installation becomes defective.
Federal law provides both civil and criminal penalties for
copyright infringement.
PART 2.4.0 DISTRIBUTION OF THE WORD SEARCH CREATOR
The Shareware version of the Word Search Creator MUST
distributed as a single package containing the files:
WORDSRCH.EXE -- The program
WORDSRCH.DOC -- This documentation
WHATS.NEW -- New Features, Update History
BIBLE.LST -- Word list
EDUCATE.LST -- Word list
FURNIT.LST -- Word list
NATURE.LST -- Word list
INVOICE.BAT -- Sends Invoice to printer
SPELLBND.CAT -- Other SPELLBOUND! Software Products
WORDSRCH.MSG -- Description of program for catalogs, BBSes
Distributing the program with any of these files missing is a
violation of our copyright. If distributing as a single
compressed file the file's prefix should be WSRCH11 unless this
name were to duplicate a previous name. Ie. if distributing as a
ZIP format file, we prefer it would be, "WSRCH11.ZIP".
The file, WORDSRCH.MSG is a file containing a description of
the program which has its margins set for easy upload to BBSes.
Use it to give a description of the Word Search Creator package
when you upload it to BBSes. Distributors can use it to edit a
description for use in their catalogs.
PART 2.5.0 DISCLAIMER
This program is provided "AS IS" without any warranty,
expressed or implied, including but not limited to, implied
warranties of merchantability and fitfulness for a particular
purpose, with respect to THE SOFTWARE, the documentation, and the
media upon which it is conveyed.
In no event shall SPELLBOUND! Software, Kenneth R. Casey, Jr.
or their suppliers be liable for any damages whatsoever
(including, without limitation, damages for loss of business
profits, business interruption, loss of business information, or
other pecuniary loss) arising out of the use of or inability to
use "The SPELLBOUND! Word Search Puzzle Creator" even if
SPELLBOUND! Software or Kenneth R. Casey, Jr. have been advised of
the possibility of such damages. Because some states do not allow
the exclusion or limitation of liability for consequential or
incidental damages, the above limitation may not apply to you.
PART 2.6.0 TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR REGISTERED USERS
If after reviewing the documentation you find that you are
unable to understand some function of the program or you are
having problems you are unable to resolve, we offer a technical
support line to our registered users for free.
The SPELLBOUND! Software Technical Support number is:
(517) 828-6520
PART 2.6.1 TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR NON-REGISTERED USERS
We get many calls for support from people who make promises
to register the product, but never do. This means not only must I
give them the fruits of my hard work for free while my family
waits patiently for our payment to come in, but I must also spend
10 to 20 minutes of my time making their theft from me easier! If
you have seen some of the other products available for word search
creation, you know that a good deal of work and thought went into
this to make this one the best available.
If you want help in evaluating this product, and you are not
a registered user, you may call us and receive technical support,
but please remember how much work I have put into getting your
copy to you. Please be considerate and register your copy of the
program if you use it after the evaluation period.
PART 3.0.0 OVERVIEW OF FEATURES
PART 3.1.0 QUITTING THE PROGRAM
Your key to exiting the program is the ESC key. From
anywhere in the program, you may press the ESC key to back you
completely out to the DOS prompt! Your original DOS screen is
saved for you. In the shareware version, a message requesting
registration is displayed as well.
PART 3.2.0 FEATURES OF THE SPELLBOUND! WORD SEARCH CREATOR
The SPELLBOUND! Word Search Puzzle Creator is the ideal
choice for the creation of your own custom word or number,
alphanumeric search puzzles. It offers complete flexibility over
how the puzzle is created. You can enter up to 80 words (or
numbers) manually (56 if printing with Laser Printer), or you can
specify a file which contains a list of words one-on-a-line which
will be inserted into the puzzle.
PART 3.2.1 WATCH THE SCANNING PROCESS -- WORDS INSERTED ON SCREEN!
The program has the unique feature of allowing you to
actually watch as the program scans the puzzle grid onscreen to
find an area into which to insert the word. Each position in the
puzzle is highlighted briefly as it is scanned in random order.
As each word is inserted, its position in the puzzle is
highlighted until the next word is resolved. This makes the
puzzle creation process as much fun as solving the puzzle!
PART 3.2.2 TOKENIZER PARSES TEXT FILES INTO WORD LISTS!
With your registration of the program, in addition to
receiving a number of other SPELLBOUND! Software products, you
will receive a utility "The Tokenizer" which will "tokenize" --
that is -- convert any text file into a list of words one-on-a-
line which can then be processed by the Word Search Creator.
PART 3.2.3 OU ARE GIVEN UNPRECEDENTED CONTROL OVER THE PUZZLE!
You can create complicated puzzles by inserting the words Up,
Down, Diagonally, and Backwards in all directions, or you may
disable Diagonal and/or Backward insertion of words to make
puzzles more suitable for the younger set.
PART 3.2.4 CREATE ULTRA COMPLEX PUZZLES; ALPHANUMERIC PUZZLES!
The program automatically scans the type of words being used
and uses only the character types in the puzzle to fill the puzzle
when insertion of words is finished. If only letters are used,
only letters will be used to fill the remaining positions in the
puzzle. If only numbers are used, only numbers will fill. If a
combination of letters, numbers and or punctuation are used, then
the fill characters will be comprised of characters from each of
three sets recognized: Numbers, Letters, and Punctuation. Any
words containing characters not found in the internal tables will
be rejected from the puzzle whether entered manually or from a
word list. The following comprises the entire set of allowable
characters.
Alphabetical Numeric Punctuation
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ 1234567890 -_',./
You have complete control of the size of the puzzle, (from 3
X 3 to 18 X 18), and the option of printing the puzzle in large
format using your printer's Double Wide control codes. You are
given control over how much sharing of letters occurs between
words, the complexity of the fill characters and you have the
option of having a solution printed out as well! When the puzzle
is finished, you can send it to your printer or to a file on your
disk from which it may be edited and printed from the File Manager
included in the program! All file names are generated
automatically to save you typing! These names may be changed to
more meaningful names by renaming them from within the File
Manager.
PART 3.2.5 WORD LIST MANAGEMENT FEATURES!
The program has the ability to save the words to a list after
you have entered them. The words are first sorted by length so
that the longest words are inserted first, allowing for a better
fit. It can then process the list or indeed any list containing
words one-on-a-line rather than having you type them in
individually. Even after processing a file, you can optionally
add additional words or delete words from the list and then save
the revised version of your list!
PART 3.2.6 COMPREHENSIVE FILE MANAGER FOR RENAMING, PRINTING,
DELETING, VIEWING, EDITING, OR SELECTING FILES!
The program contains a comprehensive pop-up File Manager
which makes the selecting, renaming, viewing, editing, printing
and deleting of files easy. To bring up the File Manager, press
F2 while you are in the Configuration Screen.
For help at any time, press F1 for a simple pop-up help
screen. If you require further help, press F1 again to read this
documentation online. If you want to begin reading at the last
place you left off, press Alt-F1 to return to your book mark!
PART 4.0.0 INSTALLATION
To install the program, just copy all of the files to the
same directory. WORDSRCH.DOC is the documentation file and may be
sent to your printer. WORDSRCH.DOC must reside in the same
directory as WORDSRCH.EXE to be available for viewing from within
the program. To view the documentation from within the program,
just press ALT-F1 or press F1 twice, once to bring up a help
screen containing a list of keys, and again to enter the
documentation. The program will place a "bookmark" in the place
you were reading as you exit the documentation screen so that you
are returned to the same position the next time you read the
documentation using the ALT-F1 key.
If you wish to use the Puzzle Creator from any drive or
directory on your system, make sure that the directory in which
these files reside are included in your PATH statement (usually
found in AUTOEXEC.BAT). If not, then before running the program,
change to the directory or drive containing these files.
PART 5.0.0 HOW TO USE THE PROGRAM
The simplest way to start the program is by typing:
WORDSRCH (Press ENTER)
This will start the program for the manual entry of words. If
you wish to use a file containing a list of words which you have
prepared beforehand, just press "F2" from the Configuration Screen
to bring up the "File Manager" from which you may select a file
for processing. If you are unsure about a file's contents, just
press the ENTER key while the file is highlighted and you will be
able to view the contents of the file. To select a file, press
the SPACEBAR while the file is highlighted.
When the program begins in any but AUTOMATIC mode, the
Configuration Screen is displayed into which all of the
configuration information may be typed. These settings are saved
to the configuration file, "WORDSRCH.CFG", which is read every
time the program starts. This allows the configuration
information to be retained by the program for future use.
PART 5.1.0 SPECIFYING WORD LIST ON THE COMMAND LINE (AUTOMATIC
MODE)
To process a list of words you have created AUTOMATICALLY,
that is, without need for human intervention, just type "WORDSRCH"
and the name of the word list.
WORDSRCH WORDS.LST
This will cause the file, "WORDS.LST" to be read in and a
puzzle created from the words contained in the list. Once it has
finished, it will exit immediately. Unless there are
configuration options stored in the list file (see later in this
document), the list will be processed with the configuration saved
the last time the program was run.
Any and all configuration settings found in the file will
automatically take precedence over the current configuration in
the WORDSRCH.CFG file. This allows you to save all of the
settings necessary to create a puzzle, dimensions, sharing, fill
complexity etc. in the form of a word list!
PART 5.2.0 THE FILE MANAGER
Press F2 to bring up the "File Manager" from which you may
select a list file for processing. All of the commands for the
File Manager are listed tersely across the top of the File Manager
Box. There is no limit (aside from memory) to the number of files
which can be displayed in the File Selection Box. If there are
more files than will fit on the screen, you may scroll to them by
pressing the right arrow key until the column of files containing
the desired comes into view.
Press the SPACEBAR to select the currently highlighted word
list for insertion into the puzzle. If you do not specify a file,
you will enter each word manually. Even if you do specify a file,
you will still be able to add words manually to the puzzle after
the file has been processed. If you wish to discard the current
file so that you can manually create a puzzle, just press F2 to
discard the current word list which puts you into manual entry
mode. Then press F10 to move to the Puzzle Creation Screen to
begin the manual entry of the words.
The File Manager commands are as follows:
SPC=Pik TAB=Mrk F2=Man F5=Ren F6=Del (ALT)F8=Ed F9=Prt F10=* CR=Vw
S=Srt
PART 5.2.1 THE FILE MANAGER COMMANDS
SPC=Pik -- Use the SPACEBAR to select a word list with which to
create a puzzle. The file's name will appear in the reverse video
box in the lower left side of the screen.
TAB=Mrk -- Use the TAB key to mark the currently highlighted file
for deletion. Once you have marked all the desired files for
deletion, press the F6 key to delete all of them.
F2=Man -- Use the F2 key to discard the current word list for
manual entry of words into the puzzle.
F5=Ren -- This key allows you to rename the currently highlighted
file.
F6=Del -- F6 causes all of the marked (see TAB=Mrk above) files to
be deleted. You will be asked to confirm the deletion. When you
answer "Y", all of the files will be immediately deleted.
(ALT)F8=Ed -- ALT-F8 allows you to specify your own editor which
will be invoked when F8 is pressed. Give the full pathname to the
editor if its directory is not in your PATH. The editor MUST be
able to take a file name on the command line, as the currently
highlighted file's name will be appended to the command line when
the editor is invoked. Your editor must be able to save in ASCII
or DOS Text File format without control codes if you are going to
edit word lists. If you try to create a puzzle from a word list
having these embedded control codes from Word Processors such as
WordPerfect, WordStar, etc., unpredictable results will occur.
F8 immediately invokes your editor with the currently
highlighted file as the command line. If you have not yet
specified an editor to use, you will be first prompted to enter
the command to invoke your editor as if you had pressed the F8
key.
F9=Prt -- Press F9 to print the currently highlighted file. The
file will be scanned to make certain that it is indeed a text
file and not a binary file. You will be asked to supply your LPT
port number (you can specify it on the Configuration Screen as
well. This value will be the default answer.) The file will then
be sent to your printer. Use this to print puzzles you have sent
to a file.
F10=* -- F10 allows you to enter a file specification using the
DOS wild card characters. This allows you to filter the files the
File Manager displays. For example, the File Spec "*.LST" will
cause the File Manager to display only files having the extension
".LST". This setting is saved for future use.
CR=Vw -- Pressing "CR" or the ENTER key causes the File Viewer to
display the currently highlighted file on the screen. Use the
Arrow (Cursor) keys, HOME, and PgUp, PgDn keys to navigate the
file.
S=Srt -- Use the "S" key to toggle between sorting the files
alphabetically and displaying them in normal order. This will
help you to locate files more easily. Your preferred setting is
saved for future use.
PART 5.3.0 THE CONFIGURATION SCREEN
Check the screen to be certain that all of the settings are
the ones you wish to use with the current puzzle. Letters or
numbers contained within brackets ([]) are the only viable options
for a particular selection. Options separated by "/" are the only
valid options for that selection. Options separated by "-" are
meant to indicate that any value within the range is acceptable.
You will not be allowed to enter invalid options into the
configuration fields. Once the settings have been edited to your
satisfaction, press the F10 key to accept them and move to the
puzzle grid screen. They will be saved to the configuration file
for future use.
PART 5.3.1 CONFIGURATION SCREEN FUNCTIONS AND FIELDS DESCRIBED

Belly Button Type [I]nnie, [O]utie: I
ESC=Quit F3, F5-F8=Scrn ALT-S=Shell ALT-F1=Doc F4=Init
PART 5.3.2 THE TITLE OF THIS PUZZLE
This will be the title line which will be printed at the top
of the puzzle.
PART 5.3.3 PUZZLE SIZE
This may be any number between 3 and 18. This will be the
dimensions of the puzzle, ie. a value of 18 will create a puzzle
18 X 18 letters in size.
PART 5.3.4 MAKE WORDS VISIBLE WHILE INSERTING
Enter "Y" here if you wish to watch as the words are inserted
into the grid. If you will be the one solving the puzzle, you may
wish the words to be hidden from you so that you cannot see where
the words are inserted. In that case, answer "N".
PART 5.3.5 WIDE OR NARROW FORMAT
If your printer is capable of printing double wide
characters, you may specify "W" here. If you would like the
puzzle printed normal size, enter "N". For this to work properly,
you must enter the printer control codes to begin and terminate
double wide print from your printer manual. (See below). Only
the puzzle itself will be printed double wide. The title, the
word list and instructions will be printed in normal format.
PART 5.3.6 WIDE PRINT CODES/END WIDE PRINT CODES
Enter into each of these fields the appropriate control code
sequence from your printer manual. The default codes are for
Epson printers. Enter the ASCII decimal values separated by a
space. Do not enter Hexadecimal values or literal characters.
These are used only when "Wide Format" is enabled in the field
above. If you do not enter the proper codes here and have wide
print on, the puzzle will be printed to the extreme left of the
page!
PART 5.3.7 DIAGONAL, BACKWARD, HARD, ANSWER, SHARE, OR QUIET
Enter each of "D", "B", "H", "A", or "Q" to enable any or
all of these three switches. To disable any of these, just delete
them from the input field. Entering "H" alone has no effect as
"H" forces a higher percentage of insertions to be both backward
and diagonal. If backword and diagonal are disabled, this would of
course be of no effect.
Specifying "A" (Answer) causes a solution to the puzzle to be
printed out. The solution consists of the words listed in
descending order of size. Next to each word is the x, y
coordinates of the first character in the word, followed by the
compass direction of insertion. To the far right of each word, a
number is given corresponding to the number of occurrences of
letter sharing when the word was inserted. This is to help
determine the optimum number of iterations (see below) to get the
desired amount of letter sharing. An example solution print
follows:
Solution for: A WORD SEARCH PUZZLE
==========================================================
# WORD (Insert Order) ACROSS, DOWN DIR SHARES
==========================================================
(1) WORDS --> 14, 14 SW N/A
(2) PRUNE --> 13, 16 W 1
(3) SHORT --> 10, 18 NW 1
(4) DARE --> 12, 18 N 1
(5) LATE --> 9, 12 SE 1
(6) MATE --> 13, 14 W 1
(7) JADE --> 9, 13 S 1
(8) FADE --> 11, 15 W 1
(9) RATE --> 7, 15 N 1
Entering "Q" into this field disables the highlighting of the
puzzle positions as they are scanned. It also disables the brief
highlighting of the most recently inserted word and the
accumulator fields at the top of the Puzzle Creation Screen which
indicate the number of insertions in each direction of the compass
and the percentage of Easy and Hard insertions. The screen can
get pretty busy for some people's taste, so this option is
provided to quiet the screen down a bit! When this option is off,
the accumulated totals will not be printed with the puzzle.
Otherwise, if you have specified that the Solution is to be
printed, the totals will be printed with the puzzle in the
following manner:
E=05 S=07 NE=03 SE=01 EASY HARD W=03 N=04 NW=06 SW=05
047% 053%
PART 5.3.8 PRINT PUZZLE ROW, COLUMN NUMBERS
Answering "Y" here will cause the printing of numbers across
the top and down the left side of the puzzle to enable you to more
easily find the coordinates for the solution.
PART 5.3.9 PAUSE BETWEEN WORDS WHEN LIST USED
Entering "Y" here causes the program to pause and wait for a
keystroke between each word when processing a word list file. This
allows you to watch carefully while a list is being processed.
This has no effect when you are entering words manually or
when a list is being processed in AUTOMATIC mode.
PART 5.3.10 SEND PUZZLE TO PRINTER, LASER PRINTER OR FILE
You may send the puzzle either to a file on your disk for
editing and printing from the File Manager, or directly to your
laser printer or printer connected to a parallel port. If your
printer is a serial printer, send it to a file and see your DOS
and printer manuals about how to send a file to your printer.
Setting it to "Laser", causes the page length to be converted from
66 to 59. When sending to a file, the page length will be set to
66 lines per page, so you may wish to edit the puzzle before
sending it to a laser printer as undesirable results may occur.
PART 5.3.11 PARALLEL PORT
Specify the number of your parallel port. This will be the
"LPT" number, or "n" in "LPTn". This will be the port to which
your puzzles will be printed when a printer is specified and to
which files will be sent when printing files from the File
Manager.
PART 5.3.12 NUMBER OF TRIES FOR SHARE SCAN
Use this setting to force the program to search for
opportunities for the current word to share common letters with
other words already inserted into the puzzle. The program will
randomly scan the puzzle for the specified number of iterations
until it either exceeds this number or resolves the insertion with
a sharing opportunity. By varying the value of this number, you
control the amount of words shared. The higher this number, the
slower the insertion will be, but the more words you will be able
to fit into the puzzle. By setting it to the maximum of 32,440,
you virtually guarantee that all words will share common letters
with other words. In cases where it becomes apparent that there
are no opportunities available for the word to share letters with
another word, you may press the SPACEBAR to abort the SHARE Scan
and enter the final scan which will resolve the insertion
instantly. While the SHARE Scan is running, there will appear the
words "SHARE Scan:" followed by the number of the current
iteration at the bottom of the screen. If the SHARE Scan is
aborted or exhausted, the words "FINAL Scan:" will appear to
finally resolve the insertion. At this point, the entire puzzle
will be searched in random order, the maximum number of tries is
equal to the square of the size of the puzzle. (ie. 18 X 18 puzzle
= 324) On a 16mhz 286, this scan will resolve an insertion in the
largest size (18) in about a second! It will only scan
coordinates and directions which weren't previously tried in the
SHARE Scan.
PART 5.3.13 INSERT ORDER LONG, SHORT, RANDOM
Use this input field to indicate the order in which the words
will be inserted when processed from from a list file. Inserting
the longest words first will result in the greatest number of
words fitting into the puzzle, but in the case of very long words,
can force a large number of subsequent insertions to be inserted
in the same direction. Inserting the shortest words first can
cause the longest words to be rejected later when it will be
difficult to find a contiguous series of positions which will
allow the word to be inserted. Random order may be preferred when
you are not trying to fit a large number of words into the puzzle.
When you are in the Puzzle Creation Screen, you will have the
opportunity to reinsert the words if you are unhappy with the way
the words have been inserted. If you choose to reinsert them, you
will be given the opportunity to choose the sort order again with
the current order being the default. This way you can try all
three ways to determine the best method for the current word list.
PART 5.3.14 PUZZLE FILL COMPLEXITY LEVEL
This input field allows you to enter a number between and
including 1 and 20 to determine the amount of complexity involved
in filling the positions left empty after the words have all been
inserted. By setting this to 20, you force all fill characters,
whether letters, numbers, or punctuation characters to be
characters which appear within the words in the puzzle. All
characters found not to have occurred within the words used in the
puzzle will be rejected. Imagine the difficulty searching for
words in a puzzle filled in such a way!
As you enter values which converge on 1 you increase the odds
other characters will be allowed into the puzzle, until with a
value of 1, only 1 in 20 characters will be forced to have been
found in the word list.
PART 5.3.15 BELLY BUTTON TYPE (CAUTION!!!)
This input field allows you to proudly enter your belly
button type. While I am personally of the "Innie" persuasion,
(INNIES RULE!) I believe the world is large enough for belly
buttons of all types. For the purposes of this program, however,
we only recognize the two types: "Innie" and "Outie". Entering
anything other than "O" or "I" into this field can lead to
embarrassment when you go to the beach!
PART 5.3.16 ESC=Quit
Use the ESC key anywhere to back out of the current operation.
Pressing ESC while in the Configuration Screen will cause you to
exit the program after being prompted to confirm your desire to do
so.
PART 5.3.17 F3, F5-F8=Scrn
The F3 key allows you to change a fill character on the
Configuration Screen. The keys F5 and F6 cycle forward and
backward respectively through the 120 possible color combinations
possible for the top and bottom areas of the Configuration and
Puzzle Creation screens. (Attributes having the same foreground
and background colors are not allowed). The F7 and F8 keys
similarly cycle the color scheme used for the input part of the
Configuration Screen and the Grid area of the Puzzle Creation
screen.
PART 5.3.18 ALT-S=Shell
Pressing ALT-S allows you to reenter the Operating System
(DOS) and run 1 or a series of commands without having to leave
the program. You may "Shell" to DOS from either the Configuration
Screen or the Puzzle Creation Screen. To return to the program,
type "EXIT" at the DOS command prompt and press ENTER. You will
instantly resume where you left off.
PART 5.3.19 ALT-F1=Doc (F1)
Pressing F1 takes you to a terse help screen containing a
list and explanation of various keys used in the program in
addition to a brief description of the process used to create a
puzzle. If you press F1 again while this help screen is
displayed, the program documentation itself will be displayed.
You may then use the arrow keys and the PgUp and PgDn keys to
navigate the text.
Pressing ALT-F1 allows you to enter the documentation screen
without first having to review the help screen. In addition,
while the F1 key always starts you at page one, the ALT-F1 key
causes the reading of the documentation to resume at the position
at which you were when last you exited the documentation. If you
wish to print the documentation, just press the F9 key while it is
being displayed. Make sure your printer is ready with plenty of
paper!
PART 5.3.20 F4=Init
The F4 key, when pressed from the Configuration Screen,
causes all of the settings (Configuration) including the input
field values and the color scheme to be initialized to the program
defaults.
PART 5.4.0 THE GRID SCREEN
When you press F10 while at the Configuration Screen, the
word search puzzle grid is displayed. If no list of words has
been specified, you are prompted to enter the first of up to 80
words (56 if Laser) to be inserted into the grid. Enter each word
as you are prompted. If you have specified in the Configuration
Screen that you wish to view the insertion of each word, you will
see each word being inserted into the grid as you enter it. If
you have specified that you do not wish to see the words as they
are inserted, (as may be the case if you intend to solve the
puzzle yourself) you will see only an apparently empty grid.
As the program searches for space into which to insert the
word, the number of tries is reported. If you have specified a
number greater than zero for the SHARE scan, the words "SHARE
Scan:" will appear before the number of tries. If you have
specified zero for the SHARE Scan, or when the SHARE Scan has
either been aborted or exhausted, the words "FINAL Scan:" will
appear instead during which the program will scan the entire
puzzle -in random order- for a maximum of Puzzle Size squared for
a fit.
PART 5.4.1 IF WORD -CAN- FIT, THE PROGRAM -WILL- FIND IT!
If there is a place in the puzzle in which the word can be
inserted, the program WILL find it, always -- and in less than 2
seconds! (Share Scan must be set to zero to obtain this speed, of
course!)
To test it, manually enter a word, (a nonsense word will do)
which you can clearly see will fit, sharing letters with a number
of other words. It WILL find the place it will fit, and it will
find it almost instantly! It is extremely fast! If it is
determined that a word will not fit , the message "DISCARDED: "
and the word will appear to the left of your screen, the second
line from the bottom. All messages concerning the processing of
the words are printed in this position. The other message you
might see at this screen position is "DUPLICATE: " and the word.
The program does not allow duplicate entries either manually or
from a file. This way, if you use the "Tokenizer" program from
SPELLBOUND! Software (sent to those who register. See "INDUCEMENTS
TO REGISTER" below) to create word lists from text files, you do
not have to worry about duplicates.
If while manually entering words you find that a word will
not fit which you really want in the puzzle, try pressing F10 to
terminate entry. Then enter "R" for Reinsert. This will sort all
of the words by length, then choose the Long word first sort to
insert all of the longest words first for a better fit. When the
reinsertion has finished, enter "A" to begin manual entry of words
again and try entering your word again. Chances are that your
word will now fit. If it doesn't, repeat this method again until
it does or use the List Manager to delete other words from the
current list.
PART 5.4.2 GETTING MORE WORDS TO FIT INTO THE PUZZLE
Another way to cause a greater number of words to fit is to
force the sharing of letters by placing a very high number in the
SHARE Scan field to force the sharing of letters. Because more
words will share common space, more words will fit into the
puzzle. Try running BIBLE.LST with sharing off. You will find
that one or two of the names will be discarded. If you then
specify a high number of SHARE Scan attempts and try it again,
chances are all of the words will be accepted!
PART 5.4.3 WORD LIST DISPLAYED ONSCREEN
As the words are entered either manually or from a file, you
will see the words scroll first down the left side of the screen
and then the right. This will help you to keep track of words
entered. If the number of words exceeds the number of words which
will fit on the screen (36), the words will be scrolled upward to
accomodate the incoming words.
After all of the words have been entered, you will be
prompted to enter a letter corresponding to several options which
appear in the following line at the bottom of the screen.
PART 5.4.4 SOME GRID SCREEN FUNCTIONS
When the program has finished inserting words into the
puzzle, the following line appears at the bottom of the screen
which apprises you of the commands available to you at this point:
ESC, [S]ave, [R]einsert, [P]rint, [V]iew, [A]dd or [L]ist Mgr:
ESC causes the program to start over from the beginning. If
you have entered any words manually, you will be warned to save
them save them to a list. If you fail to do so, they will be
discarded.
"S" causes the set of words in the current puzzle to be saved
to a list file for future use. Once the list is saved, you will
be returned to the Configuration Screen.
Entering "R" causes you to be prompted for a sort method.
The words will then be sorted accordingly and reintroduced into
the puzzle. This allows you to reassemble the puzzle if you are
unhappy with the results of the first try.
Entering "P" causes the puzzle to be sent to the printer or
to a file in its present form. You will be given an opportunity
to save the current version of the list before actually printing
the puzzle.
"V" only appears when viewing of the insertions has been
toggled off in the Configuration Screen. This is useful when you
would like to see the puzzle briefly to confirm an orderly
insertion pattern.
"A" causes the manual adding of words directly into the
puzzle to be resumed. If you cannot get a word to fit into the
puzzle, or if you wish to delete a word from the puzzle and list,
a "List Manager" has been provided.
Press "L" here to invoke the List Manager. A highlight bar
will immediately on the first word in the list in the upper left
corner of the screen. At this point, you can use the arrow keys
to highlight a word to be deleted, or press "A" to Add a word to
the list.
This Add is different from the previously mentioned Add which
enters words directly into the puzzle. You may have attempted to
add a word to a largely full puzzle only to find that it will not
fit. By adding it to the list using this List Manager, the list
will be sorted and reinserted into the puzzle when you exit the
List Manager giving this word a better chance of fitting into the
puzzle!
If you wish to delete a word, use the arrow keys to highlight
the desired word and press the "DEL" key. The word will
immediately be deleted without further confirmation. If you
delete a word by mistake, just press "A" to add it again. Words
will be added to the end of the list, so if there are more words
than can be displayed on the screen, you may not actually see the
word being appended to the end of the list. In this case, use the
arrow keys to move to the end of the list to confirm the add if
you wish.
PART 5.4.5 SAVING YOUR WORD LISTS
When you print the puzzle, quit, or choose "S" when insertion
is finished you will be asked if you would like to save the words
to a file. If the words were originally from a file, the words
will be saved to the same file name, and a "BAK" file will be
created from the old version so that if you change your mind, you
will still have your original. If there is already a "BAK" file
for the list, it will be overwritten with the new "BAK" file. If
the words were manually entered, the file will be given the name
"WORDLIST.nnn" where "nnn" is a number from 000 to 999. (You may
then rename the file to a more meaningful name by calling up the
File Manager, highlighting the file and pressing F5 to rename it.)
PART 5.4.5.1 SAVING THE CURRENT CONFIGURATION SETTINGS WITH THE
WORD LIST
After specifying that you would like to save the word list,
you will be asked if you would like the current settings from the
Configuration Screen to be saved with the word list. This allows
these same settings to be used at a future time with this word
list, even though the default settings saved to the program's
configuration file "WORDSRCH.CFG" have been changed since the list
was created. When settings are saved with a word list, they will
only be used when the word list is processed in AUTOMATIC mode
(when the file's name is specified on the command line).
Any settings not explicitly specified in the word list will
be supplied by the settings in the current configuration when the
list is processed from the command line. When the list is
selected from the File Manager screen for processing from within
the program, the settings stored with the list are ignored. You
will instead specify the settings to be used at the Configuration
Screen, and you will be given the opportunity to save the list
with the current settings. All settings will be saved with the
list. You may then edit the settings from the File Manager by
highlighting the list and pressing F8 to edit the file using your
favorite text editor.
PART 5.4.5.2 CAUTION!
If you have terminated the processing of words from a list
prematurely, only the words which have been inserted into the grid
will be saved to the list if you should choose to save the new
version of the list. Any words found to be duplicates or which
have been discarded due to failure to fit, will also be left out
of the new version of the list. You will have a backup of your
original in the "BAK" version of the list, but it will be
overwritten the next time you save this list. Keep this in mind
when creating a new list. If you do not wish these changes made
to your list, do not save the list. Your old version will remain
intact unless you specify that you would like to save the new
version. To restore your list when words have been discarded
during processing, just press ESC to return to the Configuration
Screen. The word list will be reread from the original file.
PART 5.5.0 AUTOMATIC FILE NAME GENERATION
If you specified in the configuration screen that the puzzle
will be printed to a file, the file's name will automatically be
generated just as the word list file's name is. If the puzzle is
the result of a word list, the puzzle's name will be the prefix
(the first eight letters before the period) of the word list name
and an extension "000" to "999". For example, the word list
"FURNIT.LST" would yield "FURNIT.000". The next puzzle created
from this list would be "FURNIT.001", and so on. If the words had
been manually entered, the prefix of the file name will be
"PUZZLE" and the extension once again would be the numbers "000"
to "999". This feature is for the purpose of saving you from
having to repeatedly type file names. If you wish to rename the
file, bring up the File Manager, (press F2 while at the
Configuration Screen), highlight the file and press F5 to rename
it.
PART 5.6.0 AUTOMATIC MODE
Automatic mode allows you to run the Wordsearch Creator
without need for human intervention. When run in AUTOMATIC Mode,
the program processes the specified file prints it to a file or
sends it to a printer and then exits. For example the command
line: "WORDSRCH FURNIT.LST" causes the Wordsearch Creator to read
in the first eighty words listed one on a line in the file
"FURNIT.LST" inserts each word into the grid and then prints the
puzzle. If printing to a file is specified, the program will
attempt to send the file to "FURNIT.000". If "FURNIT.000" is
found to exist, it will then attempt to send it to "FURNIT.001"
and so on. If while sending the puzzle to the printer, the
program determines that there is a problem with the printer, you
will be asked to remedy the problem or press any key to send it to
a file instead. This way, you can fix the printer problem and
send the file to the printer by highlighting it in the File
Manager and pressing F9.
Once the puzzle has been printed, the program will exit
automatically back to DOS. Using this option, one can create a
number of unique puzzles from the same word list, because each
time the list is processed, the words are randomly inserted into
the puzzle. You can imagine how this feature may be exploited to
very quickly create puzzles from one or a number of lists!
If you previously saved the list with the settings, any
current settings contained in the configuration file, WORDSRCH.CFG
will be overridden by all of the configuration information found
at the top of the word list file. If there are no settings stored
with the file, the settings used will be those used the last time
the Word Search Creator was run.
PART 5.6.1 CONTROLS TO OVERRIDE DEFAULTS IN AUTOMATIC MODE
When found at the top of a word list, the following switches
cause the corresponding setting in the default configuration file
to be overridden. These settings can be automatically saved with
the word list when you save a word list from within the Word
Search Creator and specify the saving of the current settings with
the word list. Use these when you wish to always run a puzzle
with the same settings each time it is run.
You may place any of these switches at the top of your word
lists when you create them from outside the program. They MUST
appear in the first column (no margins or indentations) to be
effective, or they will be treated as words to be inserted into
the puzzle.
REMEMBER!!! These switches are ONLY effective when the list
is processed in AUTOMATIC MODE! Comments are stored with the file
when the list is created by the program to help you to better
understand the purpose of the various switches. In cases where
two or more conflicting switches are specified, the last one
specified will take precedence.

PART 6.0.0 PROBLEMS
PROBLEM: When I print out the puzzle, it's
shifted to the extreme left side of the page!
SOLUTION: You have specified that you want the puzzle printed with
Wide print, but you have either failed to enter the Wide control
codes from your printer manual, or you have entered the wrong
codes. If you do not wish to print Wide, you must specify Narrow
print from the Configuration Screen.
PART 7.0.0 RUNNING THE WORD SEARCH CREATOR WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT!
We cannot recommend running THE WORD SEARCH CREATOR without
paying for it for the following reason...
PART 7.1.0 THE SPELLBOUND! SHAREWARE CURSE...
You are granted a limited license to use the program for 5
days. If after 5 days, you continue to use the program, you MUST
register to continue to use it. If you do not register, you may
give copies to friends and upload it to bulletin boards, but you
must not continue to make use of the program.
If you use the program and enjoy it, send the registration
fee. If you fail to send the fee, you will fall into the snare of
the SPELLBOUND! Software Super Duper New and Improved, All Purpose
Shareware curse. When we at SPELLBOUND! decided to come up with
our own curse, we looked in the yellow pages for a "medium".
Although it seems like a contradiction in terms, they are very
"rare", so we had to settle for a "Weldon". Weldon is not a medium
-- but his rates were reasonable. (We think Weldon IS a little
"Well done" due to forgetting to close the microwave door one too
many times.) He agreed to do the job for mentioning his name in
this documentation. This is what he was able to come up with...
SPELLBOUND! SOFTWARE'S SUPER DUPER, NEW AND IMPROVED, ALL PURPOSE
SHAREWARE CURSE!
by Weldon
(He never said we had to mention his last name!)
May...
...your pickup blow a head gasket,
...your toilet back up,
...your shrubbery turn brown,
...your boomerang not return
...your spouse become a Hare Krishna
...your dog mistake your leg for a hydrant
...your mother in law move in, permanently
...you develop the following maladies:
prickly heat
gingivitus
the heartbreak of psoriasis
halitosis
irregularity
painful warts
And worst of all...
May the most annoying man in America do a show from your
livingroom on:
"Users who secretly refuse to register shareware and the mothers
who raised them. One person reveals the whole sordid story 'I
refused to register The Word Search Creator' -- next Geraldo"
Can you imagine how cheaply we're letting you off? You could
run up thousands of dollars in medical, psychiatric, plumbing,
auto repair, dry cleaning, and dental costs, the legal costs of
deprogramming your spouse... and BOOMERANG REPAIR! (Do you know
how hard it is to find an HONEST boomerang repairman? Yet they
keep getting return business?! I got so frustrated with ours I
tried to throw it away. I gave up after 3 hours.) $19.95 can

PART 8.0.0 THE SPELLBOUND! DIRECTOR, MENU, FILE MANAGER
+--------------------------------------------------------------+
| The SPELLBOUND! DIRECTOR Menu and File Management System |
+--------------------------------------------------------------+
The SPELLBOUND! DIRECTOR is a complete Menuing and File
Management system which was designed to be ideal for installation
on new machines and over the counter sales by resellers or
consultants under their own company name. For example Mainstream
Computers in Alma, Michigan sells the program as "The MAINSTREAM
MENU SYSTEM". The SPELLBOUND! Director is not being marketed as
shareware.
PART 8.1.0 INDIVIDUAL USERS
If after examining the features below, you decide that you
would like a copy of the SPELLBOUND! DIRECTOR, you may purchase a
single copy for $34.95, or a site license according to the
schedule below.
PART 8.2.0 RESELLERS AND CONSULTANTS
As a reseller or consultant, you are called upon many times
to provide support to novice users of your PC systems. The
SPELLBOUND! DIRECTOR provides a very simple to use interface
between the user and the operating system. The File Manager
allows him to easily create, rename, and remove directories; copy,
move, and delete multiple files; handles creation, extraction and
viewing of ZIP format files created by PKWare's PKZIP programs;
while executing DOS commands or shelling to DOS from within the
program. AND -- it's fully mouseable!
Each time a program is run, as the program is loading, a box
is displayed at the top of the screen which tells the user 1. The
item name as chosen from the menu, 2. the assembled command line
which has been handed to DOS to run the program, and 3. The
resident directory. This will help your customers to become
acquainted with DOS while insulating them from its cryptic
commands.
The Menu System will appear in every way to be your own
product. YOUR NAME APPEARS IN THE INTRODUCTION SCREEN, and it
appears continuously at the top of the screen while the Menu is
running. EVERY TIME YOUR CUSTOMER TURNS ON HIS MACHINE, YOUR
COMPANY IS ADVERTISED!
PART 8.3.0 COMMENTS FROM SOME OF OUR CUSTOMERS:
"I've worked with a number of other menus with my clients. I
prefer this over all of them."
Charles Lockwood, owner TopComp Computer Systems
Distributes as "TopComp Menuing System"
Traverse City, MI
"Your menu program is excellent! Being new to PCs, the setup was
very easy and reasonably comfortable. I found IBM's Menu program
confusing, but yours was very easy to learn. I enjoy it very
much!"
Dan Singell, Pastor,
Edmore, MI
"For never using a computer until now, it's a much better system
than came with my computer."
Larry Flegel, home user
Edmore, MI
"It's excellent! It's made my job a lot easier. Setting up the
menus is simple and fast!"
Dave Harrison, Businessman
