MULTIPLE TARGET CONVERSION UTILITIES
VERSION 1.0
BY BREW ASSOCIATES
AUTHOR OF CODE THIEF VERSION 3.0
------------------------------------
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
THE PRELIMINARIES
Welcome to CONVERT, a utility that I had a desire for and nobody
else had. With CONVERT you can get indial listings off the TELENET
"phones" utility and turn them into multiple target files for Code
Thief version 3.0 and Fuckin' Hacker version 1.3. You can also turn a
Code Thief MTARG.DAT into a Fuckin' Hacker TARGET.DAT as well as
transform a Fuckin' Hacker TARGET.DAT into a Code Thief MTARG.DAT.
Speaking of versions, Fuckin' Hacker version 1.3 was the last version
of Fuckin' Hacker I had. It is possible that CONVERT will successfully
be able to deal with later versions of Fuckin' Hacker past 1.3, and if
so, please drop me a note so I can change the version number in the
program and documentation. Basically, just as long as Fuckin' Hacker
uses the same format for its TARGET.DAT file in later versions as it
did in version 1.3 all will be fine and it will work perfectly. If
anyone has the last version of Fuckin' Hacker released, please tell me.
GETTING STARTED
This initial release of the Multiple Target Conversion utilities
comes in your Code Thief 3.0 ARChive. These are the files essential to
the Multiple Target Conversion Utilities:
CONVERT.COM - Multiple Target Conversion Utilities Program
CONVERT.DOC - The Documentation You Are Reading Now
TELENET.LST - Sample TELENET Indial Access Number Listing (Valid
as of 05/01/89; If it's outdated read these docs
to learn how to get a new one)
RUNNING THE UTILITIES
Simple. Just Run CONVERT from the DOS command line. When the
program pops up you will see the main screen, with a menu. Ah, the
familiar Code Thief point and shoot menu configuration... I needed some
practice so I totally re-wrote the the point and shoot routines without
consulting the Code Thief source code.
Now you can choose what you want to do. Just use the up and down
arrow keys to move the highlight over what it is you want to perform
and either press the space bar or hit return. You can also use the
keys of the corresponding letter to move the highlight to that
selection. Then hit space or return to choose it. Note that choice
"E" is an option to quit to DOS, quite helpfull if you are not into re-
booting your machine every time you wish a program to disintegrate from
memory.
THE OPTIONS
OPTIONS "A" AND "B" FROM THE MAIN MENU
The first two options allow you to turn an edited TELENET listing
into either a Code Thief MTARG.DAT file (which is basically a text
file, for ease of use) or a Fuckin' Hacker TARGET.DAT file (which is
not a text file). How did I find out the format for Fuckin' Hacker's
TARGET.DAT file? Good question... I guessed. Ok, so here is how to
get a TELENET listing, if you didn't already know. Just dial TELENET
in your area (they have access numbers all over the country) and
connect. If you need your local TELENET number, someone will tell you,
just post and ask. Once connected to TELENET it takes TWO RETURN's for
the host to recognize you're there. At the "TERMINAL=" prompt enter
"d1" and hit <return>. At the "@" prompt enter "c mail" and hit
<return>. Use a user id of "phones" and a password of "phones". Now
follow the simple instructions and menus and capture to disk the entire
listing of access numbers (indials). Good. Next job is offline, so
hang up and exit from your communications program.
Break out your trusty TEXT EDITOR (that deals in straight ASCII
text files, the kind that don't look screwed up when TYPEd from the DOS
command line - PC-WRITE is *perfect* for this). Now edit your capture
file. Here's what it should look like after editing (although it may
contain up to around 350 to 450 lines, this is just an example).
AL 205 ANNISTON 236-9711 B
AL 205 BIRMINGHAM 328-2310 251-1885 B
AL 205 DECATUR 355-0206 B
AL 205 DOTHAN 793-5034 B
AL 205 FLORENCE 767-7960 B
AL 205 HUNTSVILLE 539-2281 B
AL 205 MOBILE 432-1680 438-6881 B
AL 205 MONTGOMERY 269-0090 832-4314 B
AL 205 TUSCALOOSA 752-1472 C
AK 907 TANANA 366-7167 (1) (300 BPS ONLY) -
All you want to do is edit it down that that there are no lines that
don't contain phone info. By the way, see that last line, TANANA? It
says 300 BPS only... delete it and any other lines that say 300 BPS
ONLY on them. All of the indials that CONVERT will extract are
300/1200 baud indials. For example, in MOBILE, AL above, 205-432-1680
will be extracted, the 300/1200 number. The 205-438-6881 will be
thrown out. This is the 2400 baud number. If you are using Code Thief
make sure your modem port is set to 1200 baud, even if you have 2400
baud. If Code Thief is set for 1200 and the answering modem is set for
1200 (which it is since these are the only numbers being extracted)
then there won't be any problems whatsoever. Of course some modems
(like mine) will say "CONNECT 1200" when connecting somewhere that
doesn't accept 2400 baud, but it's safer to just set your modem to 1200
from the start. As for Fuckin' Hacker, CONVERT will automatically tell
it that all numbers have a maximum baud rate of 1200 baud. This is
part of Fuckin' Hackers multiple target file that CONVERT creates.
All done editing? Save your text file, then! Ok, run the CONVERT
program and wait for the familiar menu screen to pop up. If you're
into Code Thief 3.0, choose option "A" to convert your TELENET edited
list into a Code Thief MTARG.DAT. If you're into Fuckin' Hacker use
option "B" to convert your TELENET edited list into a Fuckin' Hacker
TARGET.DAT file. After choosing your selected option you will be
prompted for the filename of your edited TELENET file. It must be in
the current directory. This makes things easier and keeps all your
tinkering in one compact place. Ok, enter your file name and away goes
the program in working on it. Or, don't enter the filename. Just
hitting <return> when prompted for the filename will abort from the
current utility operation and take you back to being in control of the
main menu. Entering a non-existant filename will cause CONVERT to beep
at you and ask again. Multiple target updates from TELENET sure are
easy, aren't they? Also note that the limit for multiple targets in
Code Thief is 500. The limit for multiple targets in Fuckin' Hacker is
150. If your edited TELENET file has more lines in it than either Code
Thief or Fuckin' Hacker can deal with only the first 500 (in the case
of Code Thief) or first 150 (in the case of Fuckin' Hacker) will be
processed. As of this current writing the TELENET list of indials has
not exceeded Code Thief's allotment, but has exceeded Fuckin' Hacker's
allotment.
THE OPTIONS
OPTIONS "C" AND "D" FROM THE MAIN MENU
Options "C" and "D" allow you to exchange multiple target lists
between Code Thief 3.0 and Fuckin' Hacker 1.3. I thought this would be
something usefull. When selected you will be prompted for the filename
of what you already have. Usually Code Thief is MTARG.DAT and Fuckin'
Hacker is TARGET.DAT. The option of entering something is there just
in case you renamed the file from DOS for backup purposes or something.
If you choose to port Code Thief format over to Fuckin' Hacker format
the output file will automatically be TARGET.DAT. If you choose to
port Fuckin' Hacker format over to Code Thief format the output file
will automatically be MTARG.DAT. As always, all files are placed on
the current drive and on the current sub-directory. You will have to
move them into their appropriate Code Thief or Fuckin' Hacker sub-
directories yourself after running the utilities. Also note that when
a new MTARG.DAT is made or a new TARGET.DAT is made any old one that
happens to be around in the current sub-directory is re-written.
That's life. Besides, getting new multiple target files is so much
easier now that recovery is a snap just in case the worst happens.
Note that when porting from Code Thief to Fuckin' Hacker that Fuckin'
Hacker can only take the first 150 entries. Porting will stop after
multiple target number 150 automatically, and you have "filled Fuckin'
Hacker up".
SUMMING IT ALL UP
Well, hope you like this and find it usefull if you do any long
distance hacking with these programs. These utilities took about eight
hours to write, including the documentation - a whole work day. Of
course I ask for no renumeration of any kind, just enjoy and post it
and Code Thief 3.0 around in its origional ARChive. Any
comments/suggestions can be addressed to me on your friendly
neighborhood pirate bulletin board (if I am on it of course).
