Hi! Here it is the all new Version 6.0 of Storm. This disk
contains the brand new version of STORM and 5 Storm Tracks.
The file STORM.HLP contains the data used by the help feature
of this program. It can also be listed or copied to your printer.
Please read it. It contains useful information. The file TIPS.TXT
contains a glossary of terms and useful hurricane safety tips. It can
also be listed or printed. Use the following commands:

║ PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ║
╚═══════════════════════╝
The purpose of this program is to track hurricanes. Storm tracks
can be stored in disk files for future use. Storm data can be entered
and reports printed on the storm's location by date and time. In
addition, graphical tracking maps showing the storm's position and
track can be generated. STORM generates hardcopy plots using an Epson
or IBM printer or an HP Plotter. You can track to one of 17 included
cities or enter the coordinates of your own city.
Every effort has been made to assure that this product is free of
defects, however it is provided as is and no warranty, either
expressed or implied is given. This program is the property of UTopia
Software. This program is being provided as Shareware. It may be
copied and distributed, but only in it's complete, original, and
unaltered form.
If you like this product, please send me $25 to become a
registered user of STORM (Texas residents add $2.00 State sales tax)
Please specify 5-1/4" or 3-1/2" disk. As a registered user, you will
receive a disk with the latest version of STORM including several
added features: the Storm GENIE track matcher, the ability to track
more than 4 storms at once, and data files on over 100 additional
storms. These data files contain official NOAA tracks for most of the
great storms of the past century. Registering will also entitle you
to obtain notice of updates and enhancements and other products from
UTopia Software.
If you prefer, you can obtained a registered version of ENHANCED
STORM for $50 (Texas residents add $4.00 State sales tax). ENHANCED
STORM contains all the features of STORM plus the ability to enter the
locations of up to 20 offshore vessels or platforms. A report is
printed listing the distance and direction of the storm from each vessel
or platform. The locations of these vessels or platforms are plotted on
the map.
Send your registrations to:

It has taken hundreds of hours of research, design, and
programming to produce STORM. I Hope that you enjoy it and that you
will drop me a letter of encouragement (hopefully with a registration
enclosed). At any rate, I hope that you enjoy this program as much
as I do.
TOM PESEK

║ ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ║
╚═══════════════════════════════╝
I would like to thank all of my users who have called or
written to me. Your error reports and recommendations for
enhancements have helped me to improve STORM. I would also like to
thank all of you who have registered STORM. Your response has
encouraged me to go on.
I would especially like to thank my wife, Audrey, for her
understanding and encouragement and my advisors and beta testers:
J.J. Hitt, Otto Lewandowski, Janis Maneli, Lee Rhyne, Larry Stehling,
Mark Ulrich, Bruce Wehrle, and Meridith Langwell-Wehrle. Finally, I
would like to thank Dr. Miles Lawrence for the 1988 & 89 storm data.
STORM is written in Microsoft Professional BASIC and compiled on
the Microsoft Professional BASIC Compiler version 7.0. Portions of the
program are written in Microsoft Macro Assembler version 5.0. Storm
tracks were obtained from the NOAA archives and the National Hurricane
Center.

║ INSTALLING & RUNNING STORM ║
╚═══════════════════════════════╝
Due to the number of storms and the size of the files, the
complete STORM 6.0 program is provided on two 5-1/4" disks or one
3-1/2" disk. The storm data files are located in a subdirectory on the
disk called STORMS.
If you have a hard disk, you may install STORM to it. This will
vastly speed up operation of the program. You can then run STORM from
the STORM Subdirectory by typing:
STORM <ENTER>.
The first time that you use STORM, run option 0 (Configure your
System) to set STORM up for your system. Select your desired time
zone, wind speed units, central pressure units, monitor type, adapter
type, etc. Your choices will be written into a file called
STORM6.DFT. After you configure your system, it will then start up
correctly thereafter.
If your install Storm on your hard disk and put the storm data
files (files of the type XXXXXXXX.'YY where XXXXXXXX is the storm name
and YY is the year) in the same subdirectory as the program disk,
leave the storm data files path blank or set it to your subdirectory
name. For example:
C:\STORM\
NOTE: If you have a Hercules Graphics Adapter and monochrome
monitor, or if you try to run STORM and get an error while loading,
start STORM by typing STORM-H <RETURN>. This will set up a Hercules
emulator before running STORM and should solve your problems. If you
use the Hercules Graphics Adapter, DO NOT use LZ or any other
compression utility on STORM.EXE, or will not work with the Hercules
Emulator.
STORM 6 data files have a different structure from earlier STORM
versions. Older files will not work with STORM 6. If you have some old
storm tracks that you want to use in version 6, copy the program
STORMCNV.EXE found on the data disk to the disk or subdirectory
containing the data files and run it by typing STORMCNV <ENTER> to
translate your old data files.
The following is a list of recent enhancements:
╔═══════════════════════╗
║ NEW FOR VERSION 6.0 ║
╚═══════════════════════╝
The storm tracks have been updated using official NOAA tracking
data. Times are now stored as GMT, wind speeds as knots and central
pressure as mb. A convert program- STORMCNV.EXE has been provided to
translate old storm data to the new data format.
STORM now contains provisions to enter and display central
pressure data. Options have been added to allow input and display of
wind speed in mph or knots, and central pressure in mb or in and to
input your time zone. Storm intensity categories have been added to
the printout.
The tracking map has been improved. The bug which allowed only
50 points per storm to be plotted correctly has been fixed. The legend
now displays time zone selected, and units on wind speed and central
pressure. Registered users can now track an unlimited number of
storms at once. (unregistered copies are limited to 4 storms). Storm
now has three display modes:
STANDARD - uses 5 colors or line types to differentiate storm tracks.
INTENSITY - uses 4 colors or line types to show storm strength
(displayed in Purple or wide dash if a Tropical depression; green
or medium dash if a tropical storm; yellow or close dash if a
category I,II, or III Hurricane; and red or solid line if a
category IV or V hurricane.
COMPARE - draws the first storm in red or with a solid line, then
draws all other storms in blue or with a dashed line.
Finally, I added a feature to the map which I personally don't
like, but one which my registered users have ask for repeatedly- the
PROJECT FEATURE. This feature projects the location of the storm 12
hours from now AT ITS CURRENT COURSE AND SPEED. As you know, if you
study past hurricanes, they seldom maintain constant course and speed.
I want to take this opportunity to state that if you use the
projection, you are on you own. I accept no responsibility for it's
accuracy or lack thereof. Please don't use this projection to make
life or death decisions. If a storm is headed your way, get out early.
It's always better to be safe than sorry. I want to keep you around as
a customer for a long time. Please follow the advice of your local
authorities.
STORM's plotter drivers have been greatly improved. STORM now
generates 11 x 17" Plots on HP7475A & 7550A plotters and now supports
HP ColorPro Plotters.
The CONFIGURE option has been expanded. A new option- "LAST" has
been added to the default map types and the other default map types
now work as expected. Options have been added to select the desired
time zone, wind speed units, and central pressure units.
Other features include:
Options which allow you to rename and to delete storms.
Registered users can now skip the Introduction Graphics by
starting STORM using STORM/S <Return>.
Storm now uses upper and lower case letters to improve readability.
A new improved defaults file STORM6.DFT has replaced STORM5.DFT.
The locations of the Caymen Islands and Cape Canaveral have been
corrected.
The "Less than 100 miles away" warning has been removed.
