DIVINATION
There are hundreds of techniques for divination, or fortune telling,
many dating back to before recorded history. The dictionary gives
three meanings for the word "divination": 1. The practice of
attempting to tell future events or discover hidden knowledge by
occult or supernatural means; 2. Prophecy or augury; 3. Perception
by intuition; instinctive foresight. The instrument of divination,
whether a crystal ball, a deck of cards, or the interpretation of
a dream, allows us to tap unconscious resources within ourselves,
often making an intuitive leap which allows us to perceive patterns
or discover truths not previously noticed. Usually, when you
practice divination, you will have a question in mind, sometimes a
very specific query, often a more general desire to explore a
particular area of your life. A peaceful atmosphere with few
distractions is best; one should be as relaxed as possible and
able to focus one's concentration clearly on the subject at hand.
The phrasing of the question is extremely important, as is the
interpretation of the answer, since the mind loves to play tricks,
oracles are known for their sly humor, and the answer may not be
what it seems. (For example, you may inquire, "Will my boyfriend
propose marriage?" The answer is "Yes", and you are quite pleased.
And, indeed, he does propose, but to someone else!) And, as any
devotee of the Tarot or I Ching knows, the answer is often cryptic;
or, the oracle may stubbornly refuse to answer at all. It is
generally considered wiser to avoid questions requiring too
specific answers and concentrate instead on more general investi-
gations. A query for a similar or related question should not be
attempted within 24 hours of the first; to do so invalidates both
readings.
GETTING STARTED
Please make a backup copy of the distribution disk before you do
anything else. Put the original in a safe place and use the backup
for your work. See the DISKCOPY command in your DOS manual.
You can run FORTUNE TELLER from a floppy diskette or from your
hard disk. At the DOS prompt, enter the command:
FORTUNE
When the file has been loaded into memory, the copyright notice and
registration information appear on screen. After you have carefully
read this material, press <ENTER>. IF YOU HAVE VERSION 2, The prompt
asks you:
COLOR MONITOR (Y/N)?
If you are using a color monitor, press <Y> for yes. Otherwise,
press <N> for no. (The default is color.)
Now the Main Menu Appears:
FORTUNE TELLER
1. One-Card Fortune 4. Quick Numerology
2. Three-Card Fortune 5. Runes
3. Detailed Card Layout 6. Dice
X. Exit
(IF YOU HAVE VERSION 2, the choice "E. ESP Test" will also be
included.) To choose an item from this menu, simply press the
numbered key that corresponds to your choice. To quit and return
to DOS, press <X>.
Let's look at each menu choice:
1. ONE-CARD FORTUNE
This is a quick method of exploring a question or a wish using a
single card from the deck. When you make this choice at the Main
Menu, the next prompt will ask you:
Your Name?
If you leave this blank and press <ENTER>, you will return to the
Main Menu. Otherwise, type your name and press <ENTER>.
The screen now reminds you:

WHILE THE CARDS ARE BEING SHUFFLED
Concentrate carefully while the pattern of shuffling cards appears
on screen. The next prompt is:
PRESS ANY KEY TO CUT THE CARDS
Press a key. The pattern of cards being cut is displayed, then your
card is displayed on screen. Below the picture of the card is a
paragraph or two explaining the card's message to you. At this point,
you can press <X> to return to the Main Menu without further reference
to this reading. If you press <ENTER>, you are offered this choice:
1. See this reading again
2. Print this reading
3. Return to Main Menu
If you press <1>, the card and its meaning will be displayed again.
If you select <2>, the card's message will be sent to your printer.
(Note: Printed messages are available only in version 2.) If you
select <3>, you will be returned to the Main Menu. Important: Once
you return to the Main Menu, this reading is no longer in the
program's memory. If you want to re-read it or print it, you must
do so before returning to the Main Menu.
2. THREE-CARD FORTUNE
This is similar to the One-Card Fortune, except that three cards
are used, giving a more detailed reading.
3. DETAILED CARD LAYOUT
This is a detailed card fortune using a 15-card layout.
When you make this choice at the Main Menu, the next prompt will
ask you:
Your Name?
If you leave this blank and press <ENTER>, you will return to the
Main Menu. Otherwise, type your name and press <ENTER>.
The screen now reminds you:

WHILE THE CARDS ARE BEING SHUFFLED

see the message "DEALING THE CARDS..." on screen for a moment. Then
the card layout appears. Each time you press <ENTER>, the next card
in line is highlighted and its meaning appears at the bottom of the
screen. At any time, you can press <X> to quit this reading and return
to the Main Menu, but if you do the reading will be lost from memory.
At the end of the reading, you are offered these choices:
1. See this reading again
2. Print this reading
3. Return to Main Menu
If you press <1>, the layout will be displayed again and you can
go through it completely once more. If you select <2>, the reading
will be sent to your printer. (NOTE: PRINTED MESSAGES ARE AVAILABLE
ONLY IN VERSION 2.) If you select <3>, you will be returned to the
Main Menu. Important: Once you return to the Main Menu, this reading
is no longer in the program's memory. If you want to re-read it or
print it, you must do so before returning to the Main Menu.
A brief note on divination with cards: In the course of our
research, we found dozens of "traditional" or "gypsy" methods of
telling fortunes with cards. Cards have been used for divination
for hundreds of years, in many different cultures, beginning with
the ancient Tarot decks which later evolved into playing cards as
we know them today. There are undoubtedly hundreds of traditional
methods that have passed down through the generations. We selected
these because they appealed to us with their straightforwardness
and simplicity.
4. QUICK NUMEROLOGY
A brief introduction to Numerology: The use of numbers predates
the alphabet, and the philosophy of Numerology is very ancient.
Numbers and the numerical values of letters are analyzed for their
symbolic meaning and metaphysical vibrations. Of particular
importance is analysis of a person's name, as the name contains
the most important keys to character traits and underlying
psychological structures.
Pythagoras, the master mathematician of ancient Greece whose
theorems of geometry are still used by modern students, was also a
great teacher of Numerology. The Pythagorean system of Numerology
uses the following chart to find the numerical value of each letter:

For example, the letters in the name West would be assigned these
numbers:
W E S T
5 5 1 2 = 13
When the letters are added, the total is 13. But this is not the
final total. Numerology uses a special system of combining numbers
by adding them across. The number 13 becomes 1 + 3 = 4. The name
West then has a Numerological value of 4.
All numbers must be reduced to one digit. For example, the number
99 becomes 9 + 9 = 18. This is still a two-digit number, so it is
added again: 1 + 8 = 9. The final number is 9.
Each number, 1-9, has a particular vibration and meaning. Each
number has its own set of both positive and negative characteristics
which may take precedence under various circumstances. The overall
combination of all the numbers in a reading, not just those of the
name as a whole, must be taken into account. Because life situations
are different, even two people with similar or apparently identical
readings will find that the vibrations manifest themselves in
different ways. There are many excellent books in libraries and
bookstores which can help provide more insight into the underlying
philosophy and history of Numerology.
When you make this choice from the Main Menu, you see a prompt on
screen:
YOUR NAME:
If you leave this space blank and press <ENTER>, you will go back
to the Main Menu. To continue with Quick Numerology, type your
first and last names in the space and press <ENTER>. (Note: There
is a limit of 30 characters to the name being entered. Spaces and
punctuation do not have Numerological value and can be omitted.)
Your name will be spelled out on screen, with the Numerological
value of each letter shown underneath. Below that, the total value
calculated for the name is shown.
When you press a key, you are shown a brief personality analysis
based on your name. After reading the analysis, you have a choice.
If you press <P>, you will get a printout of the personality
analysis (THIS IS TRUE ONLY IN VERSION 2). If you press <ENTER>
you will be returned to the "YOUR NAME:" prompt. You may enter
another name for analysis, or leave the space blank to return to
the Main Menu.
5. RUNES
A brief introduction to Runes: Runes are the characters of the
earliest known alphabet among the ancient nomadic tribes of
Scandinavia and Northern Europe. They have been found carved on
rocks in many different countries. They were also carved on small
stones or pieces of wood, and in some cases written on metal
tablets. In addition to their use in written language, the
individual characters were used for divination and spells. "Casting"
a spell meant that one literally threw the runes at the subject.
For purposes of divination, the runes are tossed or randomly laid
in a circle drawn on the ground or table. There are 25 different
runes, and a reading uses 13 of them.
When you make this choice from the menu you will briefly see the
message "CASTING THE RUNES..." on screen. IF YOU HAVE VERSION 2
you are prompted:
SEND THE READING TO <S>CREEN OR <P>RINTER?
Press <S> means that the reading will be displayed on the screen;
<P> means that it will be sent to your printer. (The default is
screen.)
The reading is divided into thirteen "houses", or areas of interest.
The interpretation of each house is shown on the screen, with a
picture of the rune next to it. Note runes are drawn much in the
same way letters of any alphabet would be, but consist of only
straight lines, no curves. (Note that if you are printing the reading,
the picture of the rune as it is shown on screen will not be printed.)
After you have seen the entire reading, you are prompted:
VIEW THIS READING AGAIN (Y/N)?
If you answer <Y>, you will go through the entire reading again.
If you answer <N>, you will go back to the Main Menu. (The default
is <N>.)
6. DICE
A brief introduction to dice: Dice have been used for fortune
telling for at least 4000 years. Originally, dice were made from
animal bones, and had different shapes and different numbers of
faces. The most common method for fortune telling with dice is to
throw two or three dice into a circle drawn on the ground. If a
die falls outside the circle, it is not counted (this is why you
will sometimes see only one die in your reading). If all the dice
fall outside the circle, the reading is abandoned. When you use
this technique, you should start with a simple question in mind.
When you make this choice from the Main Menu, you will see a prompt
on screen:

PRESS <2> OR <3>
When you press <2>, two rolling dice appear on screen. If you press
<3>, three dice are used. (Note that pressing <ENTER> takes you back
to the Main Menu.) When the dice have come to a stop, their values
appear as they would with real dice, and the total value is displayed
underneath, along with a response to your question.
At this point you have a choice. You can press <Y> to roll the
dice another time. You can control the number of dice used by
pressing <S> to switch between the 2-dice method and the 3-dice
method. Or, you can press <ENTER> to leave the dice and return to the
Main Menu.
ESP TEST
IF YOU HAVE VERSION TWO, this choice appears on the menu.
When you choose this test you see the menu:
ESP TEST
1. Precognition (predict the future)
2. Clairvoyance (know something unseen)
3. Telekineses (move objects)
These are three basic tests for ESP (extra-sensory perception).
Precognition tests your ability to predict a future event -- in
this case, which of five symbols will be randomly selected by the
computer. Clairvoyance tests your ability to know about something
that has already happened, but which you cannot see -- in this
case, which symbol was randomly picked by the computer. Telekineses
tests your ability to move objects using mental power. You will
try to control the roll of computerized dice. A single die is used,
so you will pick a number from 1 to 6. We recommend that you pick
the same number for each try of a round, to reduce the possibility
of making random matches by chance.
Press the key which corresponds to the test you want. A brief
summary of instructions will appear on screen. A "round" of tests
involves 24 or 25 single attempts. To get a good statistical base,
you should do several rounds of a test at one sitting, up to 100
rounds. The program keeps a record of your correct answers. To
quit at the end of a round, or any time during the round, press
<X> at the prompt. (If you quit before completing the first round,
your score will not be calculated.) You will then be shown the
statistics form your test, with an explanation of how your score
compares to the score that could be expected from mere chance.
Note that when you are testing for precognition or clairvoyance,
the symbols to be selected are the same symbols that appear above
the numbers 1 - 5 on your keyboard. To select a symbol, simply
press the corresponding key. DO NOT USE THE SHIFT KEY WHEN YOU
MAKE YOUR SELECTION.
Several sources were consulted in the research for this test, but
the primary source for testing methods and statistics came from the
writings of the major ESP authority, the late Dr. J.B. Rhine of Duke
University.
PROGRAMMING NOTES
These programs were written and compiled using Microsoft's
QuickBasic version 4.0 on a Leading Edge Model D. DOS 2.1 or later
is required to run the programs. Because software and hardware
configurations differ so widely, it is possible that the programs
will not run properly on some systems. Please notify us if you
have a problem.
