  35.   It's January 1, 2019 D.C. In  the aftermath  of a nuclear holocaust,          
  36.   humanity  rises  again  from the  ashes. New  Nations are  born  and          
  37.   struggle  for  domination.  Who  else but you  has  the  ability  to          
  38.   settle once  and for all the destiny of the world?  Scattered upon a          
  39.   surface of more  than  6,000 million square  miles (about  twice the          
  40.   size  the continental U.S.), people strive to build their economies,          
  41.   and you are the leader of one of these Nations.

  46.   G A M E   D E S C R I P T I O N                                               
  47.                                                                                 
  48.                                                                                 
  49.   The  game allows up  to three  players.  Each  player  represents  a          
  50.   growing Nation and you should administer your Nation's  resources in          
  51.   order to expand and prevail against your  enemies. You lose the game          
  52.   if you lose all your territory as a result of  a war.  The winner is          
  53.   the last nation left on the map.                                              
  54.                                                                                 
  55.   Each  player takes turns specifying yearly  budgets.  If at the  end          
  56.   of a given year  there are two nations  involved in physical contact          
  57.   there will be a war between these nations.                                    
  58.                                                                                 
  59.   You may gain  or  lose territory  as a result  of war.  The computer          
  60.   decides war winners based upon:                                               
  61.                                                                                 
  62.   1.  Geographical  situation.  That  is,  your  may  have  more  land          
  63.       surrounding enemy land.                                                   
  64.                                                                                 
  65.   2.  Strength factor. This is a computer  calculated summary  of your          
  66.       Nation's strength. You never see the actual  number, but you can          
  67.       safely assume that  a greater army investment, larger territory,          
  68.       per-capita population income, etc.  are  factors  that  have  an          
  69.       influence on the Nation's strength.                                       
  70.                                                                                 
  71.   Because of  its nature, it is possible  that the  game  may reach an          
  72.   impasse.  Players may achieve equal power  after  all land  has been          
  73.   occupied.  You may decide in advance the maximum number of  moves to          
  74.   be made  before  ending the game.  The  winning criteria is  also  a          
  75.   matter of choice between the players.

  77.   You  may decide that the winner is the nation with more Total Assets          
  78.   at the end  of the  year XXXX, or you could  instead decide that the          
  79.   winner will be the Nation with more Oil  fields at the  end of  year

  87.   XXXX, etc. Different winning criteria  may  lead  to  different game          
  88.   strategies. You'll  ensure an  exciting game as long  as all players          
  89.   agree  in advance  to  the maximum  number of moves and the  winning          
  90.   criteria.

  98.   To run the Strength of Nations you need:                                      
  99.                                                                                 
  100.   -   An IBM PC, PC/XT, PC/AT, PCJr or compatible  with 192K (128K for          
  101.       the Strength of Nations plus DOS).                                        
  102.                                                                                 
  103.   -   MS-DOS 2.1 or higher.                                      
  104.                                                                                 
  105.   -   A color monitor  with a  CGA  card or an  Enhanced Color Display          
  106.       with ECG.                                                                 
  107.                                                                                 
  108.   -   A diskette drive

  115.   S T A R T I N G   T H E   G A M E

  117.                                                                                 
  118.   First start up your computer using  DOS. When you see the A> prompt,          
  119.   remove  the  DOS diskette and  place in  the "Strength  of  Nations"          
  120.   diskette. Type NATIONS and the Enter key.                                     
  121.                                                                                 
  122.   The  game  displays  a  presentation screen.  When the  presentation          
  123.   screen is complete, you'll see a screen  for  entering  the names of          
  124.   the  Nations.  You  can  speed-up the presentation stage by pressing          
  125.   Enter while the initial screen is being displayed.                            
  126.                                                                                 
  127.   Type-in the names  of the countries  participating  in the game. You          
  128.   can  enter up to three names.  Each player  is responsible  for  the          
  129.   administration  of a country. You can move the  cursor  by  pressing          
  130.   the keyboard arrow keys.                                                      
  131.                                                                                 
  132.   Each  nation is  represented by a color,  so you can  pick colors by          
  133.   typing  the name  of your  nation on  the row  with  the  color  you          
  134.   prefer.  If there are  only  two  players, fill-in two country names          
  135.

  142.   and leave the remaining entry name blank.

  144.   You can also  set the initial territory  extensions for  each of the          
  145.   nations. This can be used as a way to handicap stronger players.              
  146.                                                                                 
  147.   You can have the computer play by  starting the country name with an          
  148.   asterisk (*). For example: *PCLAND.                                           
  149.                                                                                 
  150.   Press the F1 key (Help) if  you need extra information. Pressing the          
  151.   F7 key restores a previously saved game.                                      
  152.                                                                                 
  153.   When  you're  done  entering the  country  names  and  initial  land          
  154.   extensions, press the  Enter key.  You'll be  prompted to confirm if          
  155.   the entries are correct.  Simply type Y  (for Yes) or N (for No). If          
  156.   you type N you'll have the chance to modify your entries.                     
  157.                                                                                 
  158.   The next screen prompts  you for the  maximum number of moves before          
  159.   the  game  ends,  and for the winning criteria. Again, use the arrow          
  160.   keys  to  position  your selection,  and  press  any  other  key  to          
  161.   continue.

  166.   P L A Y I N G   T H E   G A M E

  169.   After  defining  the  duration  of  the  game,  the  Map  screen  is          
  170.   displayed. The initial  territories are allocated. Each color (Blue,          
  171.   Magenta, or White)  represents  a different  country.  This  process          
  172.   will  take  a few seconds;  then the computer displays  the  initial          
  173.   economic   indicators  report.  Study  it,  and  press  any  key  to          
  174.   continue.  (See Appendix A for an explanation of the meaning of each          
  175.   of the entries in the Indicators Screen).                                     
  176.                                                                                 
  177.   Next  the computer displays the  world  map.  Each  of the  blinking          
  178.   squares  represents  four  oil fields.  It's  wise  to  expand  your          
  179.   territory to cover these fields because  they  provide an additional          
  180.   source  of income.  Of course, if  the winning  criteria is based on          
  181.   the  number  of  oil  fields,  you  will  especially  find  them  of          
  182.   importance.                                                                   
  183.                                                                                 
  184.   The name of the  Nation which is  to  play next is shown  in reverse          
  185.   mode.  At  this  point  you  can  simply  press  any  key  to  begin          
  186.   budgeting, or  press the ALT  key  for special  options:  END  Game,          
  187.   Surrender (QUIT), or SAVE game.

  189.   When  you press the ALT key while in the Map screen, you can End the

  197.   game by  pressing the letter E  without releasing  the  ALT key.  To          
  198.   prevent  accidental   game   terminations  you'll  be  prompted  for          
  199.   confirmation.                                                                 
  200.                                                                                 
  201.   You can also decide  to surrender  your Nation. If so, press ALT and          
  202.   Q simultaneously. Again, you'll be prompted for confirmation.                 
  203.                                                                                 
  204.   To save the game press  ALT and S at  the same time. You'll be asked          
  205.   to  place in the  diskette slot any DOS formatted diskette  with  at          
  206.   least  30K of free space.  Make sure that you have a diskette in the          
  207.   slot and press any  key. The  current status  of  the game  will  be          
  208.   saved  but you'll  still  be  able to  continue playing it after the          
  209.   save.

  211.   To  restore  a  saved  game press  F7 while  in the initial display.          
  212.   After pressing F7 you'll be asked to  place in the diskette slot the          
  213.   diskette with  the game  to be restored  and  to  press  any key  to          
  214.   continue. Once restored, a game  will  resume exactly  at  the point          
  215.   where it was saved.

  217.   You can only have one game save per diskette.

  219.   When any key (other than  ALT) is pressed, a budget screen is shown.          
  220.   From this screen you can:

  224.   -   Display the Map screen (F2).

  226.   -   Display the Economic Indicators screen (F3).

  252.   budgeting hints. This could be useful if you are new to the game.             
  253.                                                                                 
  254.   Also note the contents  of other fields. You can see the  price  for          
  255.   each  of the items to buy/sell, and how much  income  they generated          
  256.   during the previous year.                                                     
  257.                                                                                 
  258.   The first two  lines  from the top  contain  particularly  important          
  259.   information  such   as:  Money  in  reserve  (or  amount  of  debt),          
  260.   estimated food  requirements,  number of oil fields,  and the credit          
  261.   limit. You are  not allowed to over-spend above your  credit  limit.          
  262.   If you attempt to do so, you'll get an error message.                         
  263.                                                                                 
  264.   When done entering the  Budget, press ENTER. At this  point, if  you          
  265.   have bought or sold  land you'll get  the world  map with the option          
  266.   to  select the general direction in which  to  start  extending  (or          
  267.   diminishing) your territory.  Move the  cursor  at the right  window          
  268.   with the  arrow keys.  When done press any  other key. Next you  are          
  269.   asked  to  select  whether  you  wish  to  grow  as  extended or  as          
  270.   concentrated as  possible. Move the cursor  to  the position of your          
  271.   choice with the arrow keys, and press any key when ready.

  273.   Then it is the turn of the next nation, and so on.

  278.   G A M E   C O N S I D E R A T I O N S                                         
  279.                                                                                 
  280.                                                                                 
  281.   The  Strength  of Nations  is  not meant  to  be a complete Economic          
  282.   simulation. Real  economics  is  just  too  much  more  complicated.          
  283.   However, you can safely assume that  basic economic  laws  apply  to          
  284.   the  game.  That  is, the price of land increases  if there is  less          
  285.   free land. Military investment is wasted if  there are no wars (this          
  286.   happens  to  be  my  own   opinion).  Higher  taxes  lower  industry          
  287.   re-investments, and so on.                                                    
  288.                                                                                 
  289.   Part  of  the fun  of  the  game  is  figuring the  strategies  that          
  290.   maximize your assets, military strength, etc. The  text in  the blue          
  291.   window    gives    you    some    important    clues    about    the          
  292.   advantages/disadvantages of investing in the different items.                 
  293.                                                                                 
  294.   Lastly, although this is not a game of chance,  there are sufficient          
  295.   random elements in the game to keep  it from becoming boring even if          
  296.   the  game  strategies  are mastered. A few  continuous  years of bad          
  297.   harvests is all you need to get into  trouble. In any event the best          
  298.   playing strategy should normally win the game.  (A  bad poker player          
  299.   wins poker hands from time to time, right?).

  307.   You  could  get  a book  containing  Economic  indicators  of actual          
  308.   Nations. This would give you an idea of what  could be  a  good plan          
  309.   for you. Do you want to keep a  population density of 600 people per          
  310.   square mile and  a yearly per  capita  income of 300  dollars? You'd          
  311.   then be similar to China, etc.

  324.   APPENDIX A: ECONOMIC INDICATORS SCREEN DESCRIPTION

  328.   The  Economic  Indicators screen provides information  that  may  be          
  329.   useful in evaluating the economic  health of your Nation and whether          
  330.   your  budgeting strategies are working as well as  you  expect.  The          
  331.   indicators represent the  state of your economy at  the  end of  the          
  332.   year (i.e. December).                                                         
  333.                                                                                 
  334.   -   Population                                                                
  335.                                                                                 
  336.       This is the country's population in thousands.                            
  337.                                                                                 
  338.   -   Population Density,                                                       
  339.                                                                                 
  340.       This is  the  number  of people per square mile (in  thousands).          
  341.       The U.S.A's density is about 78,  India's density is about  475,          
  342.       West Germany's density is approximately 645.                              
  343.                                                                                 
  344.   -   % Population Growth                                                       
  345.                                                                                 
  346.       It represents the percentage of population  change  with respect          
  347.       to the previous year.                                                     
  348.                                                                                 
  349.   -   Mortality rate                                                            
  350.                                                                                 
  351.       Indicates the percentage of  deceased population due to  natural          
  352.       causes, health related causes,  internal  revolutions, or  wars.          
  353.       It  is  possible  that  the  population  decrease  at  a  higher          
  354.       percentage than  the  value indicated by the Mortality rate. The          
  355.       reason for that  is that selling land  causes  a decrease in the          
  356.       population.                                                               
  357.                                                                                 
  358.   -   Total Land (x 1000 sq mi)                                                 
  359.                                                                                 
  360.       Extension  of  the national  territory  in  thousands of  square          
  361.       miles.  U.S.A. extension  is  aprox. 3,615,000  sq.  mi., France          
  362.       extension is 212,742 sq.  mi., Belgium has 11,781 sq. mi.                 
  363.                                                                                 
  364.   -   Territory gain (x 1000 sq mi)                                             
  365.                                                                                 
  366.       Net  change  in  territorial  extension from  previous  year (in          
  367.       thousands of square miles).

  403.       This   indicator  is   the  National  Income  divided   by   the          
  404.       population.

  406.   -   Productivity Index                                                        
  407.                                                                                 
  408.       This is  an  indicator  of your  technological might. The lowest          
  409.       possible value is 100.                                                    
  410.                                                                                 
  411.   -   Defense Budget                                                            
  412.                                                                                 
  413.       This is the current value of allocations for defense.                     
  414.                                                                                 
  415.   -   Number of Industries                                                      
  416.                                                                                 
  417.       Your country's number of Industries.                                      
  418.                                                                                 
  419.   -   Number of Hospitals                                                       
  420.                                                                                 
  421.       Your country's number of Hospitals.
