Section I
AN OVERVIEW OF FANTASY BASEBALL
Ever noticed that there are three things the average man figures that
he can do better than anyone else? Generally those three things are
barbecue a steak, run the company he works for, and manage a baseball
team.
The last is the reason for Fantasy Baseball. Fantasy baseball is the
game that has swept the national pastime over the last several years.
Fantasy Baseball allows a student or college professor, a Chairman of
the Board or a steel mill worker not only to manage a professional
baseball team, but to "own" it.
With your own team made up of real-life major league stars you become
owner, general manager, manager and chief talent scout. No longer do
you have to agonize over the errors made by those mental midgets that
are running your favorite team into the cellar. Now the day to day
decisions are yours to make. Do you bench Canseco? Extend Fielder's
contract? Trade Clark for Clemens? When you own the team it's all up
to you.
U.S.A. Today estimates the number of fantasy team owners to be about
half a million (and growing!). The fantasy team owner is ridiculously
easy to spot. He's the guy who can't get to work on time because the
paper boy was late again and he ain't leavin' until he finds out how
Stewart pitched last night. He is the guy sitting in the rear of the
divorce court watching ESPN's Sportscenter on his portable TV while
his wife is divorcing him for neglect.
Read on at your own risk. The addiction of the game makes heroin look
like kid's stuff.
Now LineDrive Fantasy Baseball brings Fantasy Baseball to your
computer. Gone are the hours of pouring over the sports section, armed
with reams of paper, several pencils and a five pound box of erasers
as you try to get a handle on your league's statistics. LineDrive will
organize your league in a manner that will reduce the time spent
entering statistical information to about an hour a week.
LineDrive will conduct your player draft, keep track of team rosters,
starting lineups, player contracts, league standings, fees & fines,
and print out your league newsletter for you. The program allows
rosters of up to 30 players per team and can be played for "big bucks"
or "just for fun".
-2-
The remaining instructions for LineDrive are divided into three
sections "QUICK START", "RULES & REGULATIONS" and "RUNNING THE
PROGRAM".
There are two approaches that will work with this manual:
(1) you can read it cover to cover before starting your league.
- or -
(2) read the quick start instructions referring to the referenced
paragraphs in the rules when necessary, get an idea of how
things work and dive into the program, referring back to the
manual if needed.
Which ever approach you take make sure that you are familiar with the
contents of the file README.1ST which is included on your distribution
disk. This file has some very important information concerning the
installation of the program.
If you choose (2) make sure that you at least glance at the difference
between league types {1.00} before beginning.
Within this manual you will find that paragraph numbers have been
marked with Greater Than and Less Than symbols ("< >") to make them
easier to find. LineDrive's help screens are cross-referenced to this
manual using these numbers in case you need more clarification on a
subject. Also within the manual you will find numbers encased in
Pascal's curly brackets ("{ }"). These also refer to paragraph numbers
where you can find further information on a subject if needed.
SECTION II
QUICK START
LineDrive Fantasy Baseball is a fairly simple game, but one that is
loaded with nuances. If you wish to get your league under way in a
hurry here is the way to go about it:
Grab a few of your friends (LineDrive will support leagues of from
2 to 15 teams) and decide which type of league you will have, an
auction league or a draft league (See {1.00} for the differences
between league types). The more teams involved the better. As you
involve more teams you dilute the talent pool and force your league
members to become real students of the game as they are forced to
choose between less established players to make up their rosters.
The rules boiled down to their essence are as follows:
LineDrive teams consist of up to 30 real live major league players who
are selected before the regular season starts in either a player
draft or auction {3.20} {3.30}. If you did not acquire this program
until after the season started, don't worry about it, LineDrive will
deduct any stats that have been accrued already and proceed from there.
-3-
A LineDrive team is made up of 24 active players {3.00} and up to 6
players who occupy the "bench" or reserve roster of the team. Only the
stats accrued by players who are on the active list count toward league
standings. {4.00}
Statistics are keep in the eight categories, four pitching and four
hitting.
The eight areas are:
Total Wins
Total Saves
Composite ERA
Composite Ratio (total hits plus total walks divided by innings
pitched)
Composite Batting Average
Total Home Runs
Total RBI's
Total Stolen Bases
Teams are ranked on each of these eight categories and points are
awarded based on each teams ranking in the league with 15 points being
awarded for a first place ranking, 14 points for second, 13 for third,
etc. Each week LineDrive will publish a newsletter for the league
informing members of their current standings in each category and of
their current standing in the pennant race.
When LineDrive is run for the first time you will see a screen telling
you that the program can not find the file LNDRV.CFG. THIS IS NORMAL.
LineDrive needs to have certain information before it can run. You will
supply this information in the setup procedure. The setup procedure
only need to be done once and only takes a few minutes. Before setting
up the program you must have made the following decisions:
1- the type of league you will have {1.00}
2- the name of your league (30 characters or less)
3- who will act as league commissioner {2.00}
4- how many teams will be in your league. You will need a list of
owner names and the names of their teams
5- the length of the standard player contract in your league
{3.60}, in other words, how long will you "own" each player.
6- (auction league only) the amount of the fees the league will
charge for player trades {3.53}, free agent signings {3.41} and
roster moves {3.04}
-4-
Section III
RULES & REGULATIONS
A LineDrive Fantasy League consists of from 2 to 15 teams and a
commissioner who may also double as a team owner.
<1.00> LEAGUE TYPES (for cash or not for cash, that be the question)
LineDrive supports two kinds of leagues, DRAFT LEAGUES and
AUCTION LEAGUES. Before setting up your LineDrive Fantasy
League you will need to determine which type of league you want
to play. Basically the difference is that an auction league is
played for cash prizes, a draft league is a "just for fun"
league.
In an auction league owners determine a season spending limit
before the league begins play. Owners spend money to acquire
their opening day roster in an auction {3.20}, make player
trades {3.50}, sign free agents {3.41} and make roster moves
{3.04}. All fees collected for these expenditures are collected
into a prize fund which is divided at season's end among the
league's top four teams.
In a draft league owners select players in a round-by-round
player draft {3.30}. There are no charges made for player
acquisitions, trades or free agent signings and there are no
cash awards at season end in a draft league. Draft leagues are
designed for the owner who does not want to spend a couple of
car payments to play the game.
<2.00> THE LEAGUE COMMISSIONER (who's in charge here?)
The league commissioner may double as a team owner if he can
remain impartial in rendering judgements. The commissioner is
in charge of rule interpretation, weekly statistical updates,
the league newsletter, the prize fund and it's distribution.
Before the first player draft the league members must determine
the type of league they will have {1.00} and if the league will
be a mixed league (allow both NL and AL players). If the league
is to be a mixed league, or if mid-week player trades are
allowed {3.56}, the commissioner will be required to keep a
week's backlog of box scores so that player stats may be brought
up to date for the traded players.
<3.00> THE PLAYERS (who's on first?)
Each team in a LineDrive league can have up to 30 players.
These players are grouped as follows:
2 catchers
1 first baseman
1 second baseman
1 third baseman
1 shortstop
1 middle infielder (either a second baseman or shortstop)
1 corner man (either a first or third baseman)
-5-
1 utility player {3.02}
5 outfielders, one of whom can be an American League DH
5 starting pitchers
5 relief pitchers
up to 6 reserve or "bench" players
<3.01> QUALIFYING FOR A POSITION
Before the season starts the a player is considered
eligible for a position as long as it was the PRIMARY
position that he played for his major league team the
previous season.
Once the season is under way a player becomes eligible
for any position that his real life manager plays him
at.
<3.02> UTILITY PLAYERS
To qualify as a utility player, a player must have
played at least 2 positions for his major league team
during the previous season. A player may be moved to
utility after the season starts if he plays at least 2
positions during the current seasons. These positions
may not both be outfield positions. In other words
playing Center & Right field DOES NOT qualify a player
to be a utility man. Playing Center Field and shortstop
WOULD qualify him.
<3.03> CHANGING POSITIONS
Players move be moved freely between reserve positions
and active positions with the understanding that only
the statistics accrued by the player while holding an
active position will count toward the league's standings.
LineDrive will automatically deduct stats accrued while
the player was on the bench.
<3.04> ROSTER MOVE FEES
During the setup procedure you have the option of whether
or not to charge a fee for roster moves. If you elect to
charge a roster move fee the fee will only be charged for
moving a player from the "bench" or reserve roster to the
active roster. There is no charge for moving a player from
one active position to another or for moving from the
active roster to reserve.
<3.10> PLAYER ACQUISITIONS
Players may be acquired in three manners.
1- they may be signed in the pre-season auction {3.20} or
draft {3.30}
2- they may be signed as free agents once the season starts
{3.40}
3- they may be acquired in a player trade {3.50}
-6-
<3.20> THE PLAYER AUCTION (head 'em...move 'em out!)
If you have chosen an auction league you will acquire new
players via the player auction. Owners take turns
nominating a player for auction. Once a player is
nominated all owners may bid on him until only one owner
remains. The player then belongs to the highest bidder.
The auction continues until all owners have a minimum of
24 players and no one is interested in any more players
or all owners have a maximum of 30 players. Keep in mind
that the spending limit you decided on during set up is
for the ENTIRE SEASON. If you over extend yourself in the
player auction you may find yourself unable to make key
trades or sign free agents later in the season.
If possible have a person who is not a league owner run
the auction. This way you will not be worried about who
made what bid while worrying about how much Canseco is
REALLY worth. In our league my wife handles this chore.
This is convenient because she is also on hand to beat me
round about the head and shoulders for the amount of money
I spend on players.
Once purchased this player is yours until his contract
runs out {#.##}, or you release or trade him.
<3.30> THE PLAYER DRAFT (...hell no we won't go...)
If you have chosen a draft league you will acquire new
players via the player draft. Each owner is given a
drafting position based on the position his team finished
in last season. The drafting order is a semi-inverted
order of last year's finish with the top team in the
second division choosing first. In other words in an
eight team league draft order would be:
5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
This order insures that teams who find themselves out of
the pennant race in August still have something to
compete for. (And also eliminates the possiblity of a
team throwing in the towel in order to insure a 1st round
choice next year.)
In your league's first season, team order is substituted
for last year's finish. In other words in an eight team
league the team designated as number 5 during setup would
be the first to draft.
Once you draft a player he is yours until his contract
runs out {3.60} or you release or trade him.
<3.40> FREE AGENTS (The pennant race according to Steinbrenner)
Free agents are those players who are unowned by any other
team owner and are picked up after the season starts.
<3.41> FREE AGENT FEES
In an auction league, before the season starts a fee is
determined for free agent signings. When a player is
signed as a free agent this fee becomes his salary for the
year and the fee is added to the prize fund.
-7-
<3.42> FREE AGENT'S CONTRACT STATUS
Regardless of the type of league a free agent's contract is
for the current season only. He cannot be signed to an
extended contract and will automatically be released at the
end of the current season.
<3.50> PLAYER TRADES (the pennant race according to Rosen)
<3.51> TRADE LIMITATIONS
Player trades can be made from draft day to August 1.
<3.52> TRADING FOR DRAFT CHOICES
In a draft league owners may move up in order or acquire
multiple picks in a round by trading players for draft
picks {#.##}. This procedure only effects the current round.
LineDrive will return to the previous order beginning with
the next round.
<3.53> TRADE FEES
In an auction league LineDrive will calculate the amount
owed to the prize fund by multiplying the total number of
players traded (both teams) by the fee set by the league
during setup. The teams involved in the trade can then
negotiate how much of the total amount each will each pay to
the prize fund. This can provide an important leverage in a
trade, especially toward season's end when funds are running
low.
<3.54> TRADED PLAYERS' CONTRACT STATUS
Regardless of the type of league the player's contract
remains intact. If a player has 2 years remaining on his
contract when he is acquired in a trade he will still have 2
years remaining to his new team. If a player is playing out
his option {3.62} with his current team, he will be
automatically released at season's end by his new team. The
amount of a player's salary also remains constant to the one
paid by his old team but will not be deducted from the new
team's money until draft day of the next season.
<3.55> PLAYER POSITION AND THE TRADED PLAYER
When a player is acquired from another team via a trade
he is automatically assigned to reserve status. Use the
"Assign A New Position" option {#.##} under Individual
Player Options to assign him to an active position if
desired.
<3.56> KEEPING TRADED PLAYERS' STATS CURRENT
The USA Today prints the statistics for the American
League on Tuesday and the National League on Wednesday.
If you allow trades to be made at any time during the week,
or if you allow a mixed league (both NL & AL players) the
commissioner will be forced to keep a week's backlog of box
scores from a daily newspaper to accommodate statistics that
are accrued after the player's USA Today stats come out. Use
the Update Individual Stats under the Individual Players
Options to bring stats current BEFORE making the trade.
Remember that after a trade a player will be starting a fresh
set of active stats and the team that traded him will keep his
old stats toward their standings. (If the A's traded Welch at
end of the season would the new team get to add 27 wins to
their totals?)
-8-
<3.60> PLAYER CONTRACTS
A player is considered under contract to his owner until he is
released {#.##}, traded {3.50}, or plays out his option {3.61}.
<3.61> CONTRACT EXTENSIONS
In an auction league a player may have his contract
extended by the team that owns him once. The player will
make an offer to the team based on the amount of his current
salary and on the number of years offered. The longer you
wish to tie up a player the more his offer will increase.
You will be given a chance to accept or reject this offer
before the contract is extended.
<3.62> A player's contract must be extended before draft day
of the final year of his current contract. If draft day
goes by without re-signing the player he begins playing out
his option. An asterisk will be place behind his name to
indicate that he is playing out his option and you will not
be able to extend his contract. At the close of the season
all option year players are automatically released and
become available to the highest bidder in the next auction.
<3.63> If a player's contract is extended it becomes a guaranteed
contract. If you decide to release a player {3.80} before
he has fulfilled this contract you must pay the balance of
the contract into the prize fund. This amount does not count
against your season spending limit.
<3.64> Draft league owners may not extend a player's contract.
This is because there is no compensation made and no reason
why an owner could not tie up a major star through his entire
career.
<3.70> TRADED PLAYERS CONTRACT STATUS
Players acquired in a trade with another team bring their
current contract status with them {3.50}. A player acquired
in a trade with 2 years at $27 remaining on his contract
will serve 2 years at $27 with his new team before his
contract runs out. A player who has guaranteed contract
status with his previous team will have guaranteed contract
status with his new team.
<3.80> CLOSING OUT THE SEASON
At the end of the each season the commissioner must run
the END SEASON option. This will re-set all player stats
and prepare the league for it's winter operations. At this
time each owner must submit a list of the 18 or fewer
players that will make up his winter roster. Owners are
allowed to carry up to 18 players into the winter. All
other players are released into free agency.
<3.81> PLAYER CUTS & GUARANTEED CONTRACTS
If an owner decides that he will not carry a player with a
guaranteed contract on his winter roster he will have to
pay the amount remaining on the player's contract into the
prize fund {3.63} This fine will not count against his
total season spendings in the coming season.
-9-
<4.00> LEAGUE STANDINGS (who's winnin'?)
League standings are based on the following eight statistics:
composite batting average
total home runs
total RBI's
total stolen bases
composite ERA
total wins
total saves
composite ratio (of walks and hits to innings pitched)
total saves
Each week each team is ranked from 1st to last in the league in
each of these standings. 15 points is awarded to the team in 1st
place, 14 to the team in 2nd, 13 to 3rd, etc. Then the points
awarded in all eight categories are totaled to determine the
league's overall standings.
<4.10> RESERVE PLAYERS' STATS
LineDrive will automatically deduct the statistics a player
gets while he is assigned to a "reserve" position. Only the
statistics accrued by a player while he occupies an active
position on his LineDrive team's active roster count toward the
league standings.
<4.20> PRIZE MONEY
LineDrive will automatically keep track of each team's
expenditures and the total amount of money in the prize fund.
At the end of the season the prize fund is split as follows:
1st place = 40%
2nd place = 30%
3rd place = 20%
4th place = 10%

Section III
RUNNING THE PROGRAM
<5.00> HELP
LineDrive is a simple program to run. Almost all areas of the
program are menu driven. Simply use the arrow keys to move the
highlight within the menu and press <ENTER> to make your
selection. At any time context sensitive help is available by
pressing the <F1> function key to bring up a help screen. Most
of the time this help screen will be sufficient to get you
through the problem. If you need additional help, the screen
will have a cross reference to this manual using the paragraph
numbers to make finding additional help quick and easy.
<5.10> KEY CONVENTIONS
In the instructions for LineDrive and within the program itself
we will use the following conventions:
< > indicates a required key to be pressed. For example <ESC>
indicates that the Escape Key is to be pressed.
The ^ symbol indicates a sequence of keys to be pressed. For
example <CNTRL>^Q indicates that you need to press the "Q" key
while holding down the Control Key.
The dash (-) indicates additional keys in the sequence. For
example <CNTRL>^Q-Y indicates that you need to press the "Q"
key while holding down the Control Key, release both keys and
then press "Y".
<F1> The <F1> function key is used to bring up a context sensitive
help screen anywhere in the program. This screen will contain
a cross- reference to this documentation where applicable.
<5.11> EDITING KEYS
The following keys and key sequences are used throughout the
program in any area where you are required to input names or
statistical data.
<F1> = Help
<Down Arrow> = move down one data field
<Up Arrow> = move up one data field
<Right Arrow> move one space to the right in the field
<Left Arrow> move one space to the left in the field
<INSERT> = toggles the insert / overstrike mode
<ENTER> = accept the data and move to the next field
<CNTRL>^Q = delete entire line
<CNTRL>^Q-Y = delete from cursor to end of line
<CNTRL>^<Right Arrow> = move to next word
-11-
<6.00> SETTING UP LINEDRIVE
The first time you run LineDrive you will get a screen telling
you that the program can't find the file "LnDrv.CFG". THIS IS
NORMAL. LineDrive needs to be set up before it can be run.
If you have all of the information you need to set up your
league you may press any key to begin the setup procedure. If
you need more information, such as league members, team names,
or salary limits press <ESC> to return to your operating system.
Set up is a one time procedure that only takes a few minutes.
Before setting up LineDrive you will need to hold a meeting of
the members of your league. At this time each owner should
decide on a name for his team. A vote should be held to
determine who will act as league commissioner {2.00} and what
type of league this will be. If you are still unclear about
league types, they are explained in paragraph {1.00}
If yours is going to be an auction league you will need to
decide on spending limits {#.##} and fees charged by the league
for free agent signings {#.##}, player trades {#.##} and roster
moves {#.##}. Regardless of the league type you will need to
decide on the length of the standard player contract {#.##}

<7.10> THE STATISTICAL UPDATE OPTIONS
Use the statistical updates (American & National League) to
bring your league's statistics current. Each week the USA Today
publishes the American League players' stats on Tuesday and the
National League players' on Wednesday.
LineDrive uses a unique format for stat update to greatly
reduce the time you must spend on stats. Rather going straight
down each Fantasy Roster and searching all over the paper for
each player, LineDrive will process each major league team in
order, pulling out the players on each Fantasy Roster that
match that major league team. In other words, in an American
League Update, you will update all of the Baltimore Orioles'
players in your league, followed by all of the Boston Red Sox,
etc.. In a National League Update you will update all of the
Atlanta Braves, followed by the Chicago Cubs, etc..
When you update a player you just input the stats exactly as
they appear in the USA Today. You need not worry about whether
or not a player is currently holding an active position.
LineDrive will note the player's current position and assign
the statistics accordingly.
<7.11> INNINGS PITCHED
When you update a pitcher, use a decimal point to separate
partial innings pitched from full innings pitched. In other
words, 72 and 1/3 innings pitched would be entered as 72.1 and
153 and 2/3 innings pitched would be entered as 153.2.
-14-
<7.20> MANAGER'S OPTIONS
<7.21> SELECT TEAM
You MUST select the team to work with BEFORE using any other
of the Manager's options. To select a team, simply choose
this option from the main menu and then use the UP & DOWN
ARROW KEYS to highlight the team and press <ENTER>.
<7.22> VIEW STARTING LINEUP
This option will view the selected team's starting or active
players only. Usefull to see if there are any unoccupied
positions or to see which players hold down which positions.
<7.23> VIEW ENTIRE ROSTER
Use this option to see the entire roster of the selected team
including those players who are currently on the reserve list.
Usefull to see if there are any openings on a roster prior
to a player acquisition.
<7.24> INDIVIDUAL PLAYER OPTIONS
Choose the player you wish to work with from the list
presented by highlighting him and pressing <ENTER>. You will
then see the sub-menu shown in diagram {7.00}. This is where
you can work with individual players, changing their positions
or their contract status.
<7.241> VIEW STATISTICS
This option will allow you to view an individual player's
statistics for the season. The stats will be divided into
"ACTIVE", "BENCH" and "TOTAL". A player's active stats
are those that were acquired while he held an active
position on his Fantasy Team's roster. His bench stats
are those acquired while he was on his Fantasy Team's
reserve roster. The total stats are the combination of
active and bench stats and should agree with the USA
Today's stats.
<7.242> CHANGE POSITION
Use this option to move a player from one position to
another. To assign him to another position simply move
the highlighted area using the arrow keys to the position
you want this player to occupy. Keep in mind that if
another player already occupies this position, that
player will automatically be moved to reserve.
<7.243> UPDATE STATISTICS
Use this option to update an individual player without
having to update the entire league. This is usefull if
your league allows both AL & NL players or if you allow
mid-week trades (in both of these cases before a trade
is made you must bring each player's stats current by
using daily box scores)
<7.244> EXTEND CONTRACT
In an auction league, you may extend a player's contract
one time. This extension may be for up to 5 years. After
this extension is played out a player automatically
becomes a free agent {#.##}. A player being signed to an
extended contract will want a substantial raise in salary.
LineDrive will automatically calculate this raise for you
and then ask if you wish to sign the contract. See {#.##}
for more information on contracts.
-15-
Contract extensions are not available in draft leagues
because there are no salaries paid to players and there
would be no reason that a team could not tie up a major
star for his entire career.
<7.245> RELEASE THIS PLAYER
Use this option to release a player into free agency
{#.##} and free up a spot on your roster. Before
releasing the player LineDrive will ask you to verify
that you wish to let him go.
<7.246> CHANGE MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM
Use this option to move a player to another major league
team in the event of a trade. This keeps him in the
proper order for stat updates {#.##}
<7.247> EDIT PLAYER (registered version only)
Use this option to correct errors made while entering
stats.
Section IV

READ ME 1st
this is a duplication of the file that is on your distribution diskette
called 'README.1st'. It is VERY important that you are familiar with this
section before you begin installation.

* * IMPORTANT NOTICE * *
* ************************* *
* *
* DO NOT run LineDrive from the original distribution diskette. *
* Make copies of the disk before you run the program! *
* If you have a hard drive start LineDrive from it. If you have a *
* system with two floppy drives we recommend that you put the *
* (backup) program disk in drive a: and use b: for your data disk. *
* *
* If you are running LineDrive from a system with only a single *
* 5.25 inch (360 kb) floppy you will only have room for 3 teams *
* unless you remove the file LNDRV.DOC from your play disk *
* before beginning installation. If you need to delete this file *
* use the command TYPE LNDRV.DOC > PRN to print out the *
* instruction manual before deleting it. There is a routine in *
* the program to print out the manual but it must be on disk. *
