  4. Along with the margin note way <file5> of displaying cross-references,
  5. sometimes referred to as biblical, talmudic, or postil <file14> styles of
  6. text, you can also use a format called "EMBEDDED" references.
  7.  
  8. For example, the previous paragraph includes two references to other files
  9. in one sentence of text.
  10.  
  11. In the embedded format, text remains as the most important unit, with
  12. branches to other files as secondary consideration.  As a result, sequence
  13. and linearity is maintained.

  15. In contrast, the margin note format <file5> emphasizes branching points in
  16. the text.  Which is the better format?
  17.  
  18. Given the capabilities of HOUDINI to build complex branching networks, I
  19. recommend that each ASCII file contains a single idea unit (frame) and that
  20. you use PC-Hypertext to link these idea units.  The advantages of this
  21. format are:

  23.     Faster network building...  Tools exist for linking/merging file networks
  24.     Easier reading............  Each unit of text answers a single point
  25.  
  26. In contrast, putting angle-bracket branching in your ASCII files is a
  27. word-processor intensive task -- slow, tedious, and prone to error on the
  28. cross-references.
