  1.                         How will hypertext affect society?

  4. Hypertext can transmit knowledge.  This has significant implications if you
  5. consider the characteristics of good hypertext.  For example, good hypertext:
  6.  
  7.     -  matches understanding or language of user (beginner to expert)
  8.     -  delivers needed information with a minimum of keystrokes
  9.     -  reaffirms the user's understanding of the larger field of knowledge
  10.  
  11. Given these capabilities, beginners can achieve expert-level understanding
  12. in a field of knowledge through usage of the system.  This implies that we
  13. don't need as many experts if hypertext systems can create expertise.
  14.  
  15. The consequences may be <FILE45 SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES>:

  23. Why?  Well, good hypertext can convert information:

  29.      │  into a commodity good  -- mass-produced, readily         │

  34. This is called "the democratization of information."
  35.  
  36. Consider this.  The conflicts of political ideals (between imperial,
  37. democratic, marxist, and fascist approaches) also exist in the lands of
  38. information.  For example:

  40.      Who controls the contents and access to information?
  41.  
  42.      Should private ownership of information (i.e. copyrights) exist?
  43.  
  44. Your answers identify your information philosophy (anarchist to communist)
  45. to a world where knowledge adds or creates value.
