GAMBLER'S MATE: Football Edition 1990-Copyright (c) 1990 by Mark E. Savey
Welcome to the GAMBLER'S MATE: Football Edition 1990 software package. You
are about to experience the most powerful and the least expensive Football
Handicapper on the market. Yes, a bold statement and yes there ARE better
programs (I would think?!), but none for the low price of $25 for the 1990
registration fee. How is this for results:
1) in 1989 the System 2 (The True Line Formula) program went 55-43-3
for a 56.1 win percentage. Within that 56.1% was the best bets
hitting at a fantastic 30-19-3 for a 61.2 win percentage!;
2) in 1989 the System 3 (Power Ratings/Pointspreads) program went 18-15
for a 54.5 win percentage. Within that 54.5% was the best bets
hitting at 18-14 for a 56.3 win percentage. It had been 15-7
(68.2%) after week 12;
3) in 1989 the trends analysis (Best NFL Trends) program identified
teams that had positive and/or negative trends. Some of these
trends would be very difficult to spot but were very profitable when
identified.
Overall, I did quite well last year and so can you! DO RIGHT by the
gambler's code of ethics! Register your GAMBLER'S MATE now!

** SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
The GAMBLER'S MATE: Football Edition 1990 has been tested and will run on
most systems. It requires one each of the following: 1) 100% IBM
compatible machines utilizing the 8086/8088/80286 or 80386 (and probably
the 80486) processor chip; 2) must have a minimum of 256k RAM; 3)
Monochrome/Hercules/CGA/EGA or VGA monitor; 4) minimum of one single floppy
diskette drive. *** Note: You must have your DOS's MORE command in your
path to use the "View/Print" options or else copy it on your GAMBLER'S MATE
floppy or directory; 5) systems without a hard disk may have to remove some
of the older prediction files to save space. They are in the format of
??WEEKnn.90, where nn is the week number.
** STARTUP
Let's get started! If you have a hard disk, make a separate GAMBLER'S MATE
directory. From the hard disk (C: drive), copy all GAMBLER'S MATE files
from the floppy diskette into it. For those with a hard disk and who need
help doing the above, do the following: 1) MD C:\GM
2) COPY/V A:*.* C:\GM
3) CD \GM
and that's all there is to it. If you do NOT have a hard disk, you will be
using a floppy diskette with your unregistered copy of GAMBLER'S MATE:
Football Edition 1990 or else you will be using your registered, labeled
and fully licensed GAMBLER'S MATE diskette. To start, type GM at the DOS
prompt.
Your registered copy of GAMBLER'S MATE has YOUR name and serial number on
the opening screen. The unregistered opening screen looks as follows:

====MAIN MENU CHOICE ONE (1)
THE TRUE LINE FORMULA is made up of many features. On the NFL System 2
menu (shown on the next page), you will use the following:
Choice One will: 1) update/check the vital files that are used for output;
2) track all games with its win/lose/tie record keeper; 3) play WHAT IF?
with any two teams who aren't playing against each other this week, but can
be matched up as if they were! This is used for playoff matchups.
Choice Two will run the Prediction mode. You enter the week to be
predicted and decide if you want automatic printing on your printer when
done. THE TRUE LINE FORMULA (my own NFL System 2) is engineered to analyze
each matchup and determine its own line on each game. It is the
comparison, to be later described in depth, of the actual Las Vegas lines
with THE TRUE LINE FORMULA'S output that generates the picks.
Choice Three will view or print the output that has been created for the
any week of action. BUT it needs to have YOUR DOS's MORE command in your
path or else copy it on your GAMBLER'S MATE floppy or directory.
You MUST UPDATE your files after each week of NFL games is completed.

regular season...BUT WHAT IF? they did!
Also, don't forget the playoffs!!! Use WEEK 18 for all PLAYOFF matchups.

predict option for the requested week. This means that you must have made
your updates! Below we chose Dallas at San Francisco on week 1.

SYSTEM 2 : TRUE LINE FORMULA". This invokes the predict option. You can
choose this for week one ONLY, without doing file updates! You must update
your files weekly. You are asked for the week and whether you want
automatic printing of the output. There will always be an output file for
your reference (by using option 3 View/Print, from the page 4 menu).
** The system will calculate all scores for all matchups and create the output
file. It is YOUR job to then manually compare the actual Las Vegas lines
with the output from THE TRUE LINE FORMULA (pg 08 is 1989). Note that only
the teams/scores appear on output, but I have added the "worksheet" on how
to decipher and create your plays. I do something similar when I do my
own. I print out the file and then do my calculations in pencil on the
output sheet.

** Again, I want to state that the calculations to find plays are to this
point, manually done by you the user. This will be a planned enhancement
for next year! Don't miss out. REMEMBER: the difference must be 4 points
or greater to become a play. Do not give the wrong team the value. Follow
the examples on page 08 for the actual week 1 of 1989. The greatest
difference becomes your first play, the next highest is second and so on.
Ties in highest values are rated as such, do not fill in. For example,
here are five of the highest values in a hypothetical week -values of 10,
10, 6.5, 6.5 and 6. The two values of 10 are the 1st pick, the two 6.5
values are the THIRD pick, as there is NO second pick! The fifth pick
would have been the 6, but I have not tracked down that far. It's possible
to have more than three picks total, but do not go lower than pick three.
** After entering the necessary values to return to the TRUE LINE FORMULA MAIN
MENU on page 4, we chose "3" from the TRUE LINE FORMULA MAIN MENU, "3=VIEW
/ PRINT OUTPUT FROM SYSTEM 2". You will be prompted for a week to view
then you will asked if you wish to have the file printed. Again, to use
this option, you must have access to your DOS's MORE command.
====MAIN MENU CHOICE TWO (2)
POINT SPREADS / POWER RATINGS is made up of many features. On the NFL
System 3 menu (shown on the next page), you will use the following:
Choice One will: 1) check the vital files that are used for output; 2)
track all games with its win/lose/tie record keeper; 3) play WHAT IF? with
any two teams who aren't playing against each other this week, but can be
matched up as if they were! This is used for playoff matchups.
Choice Two will run the Prediction mode. You enter the week to be
predicted and decide if you want automatic printing on your printer when
done. POINT SPREADS / POWER RATINGS (my own NFL System 3) is engineered to
analyze each matchup and determine a power rating based on the last sixteen
games that each team has played. It figures all sixteen opponents' wins
and losses and gives a declining weight on recent wins/losses and factors
each opponent's strength (wins in last 16 games). The power ratings are
stored in a file (POWER_RT.S3) and then an algorithm is executed to relate
the power ratings to a numerical pointspread. It is by far the most
sophisticated program in the GAMBLER'S MATE software arsenal. This program
will take a bit longer to run than the rest, especially if using only
floppies. As in THE TRUE LINE FORMULA, it is the comparison (a little
different though), to be later described in depth, of the actual Las Vegas
lines with POINT SPREADS / POWER RATINGS output that generates the picks.
Choice Three will view or print the output that has been created for the
next week of action. BUT it needs to have YOUR DOS's MORE command in your
path or else copy it on your GAMBLER'S MATE floppy or directory.

RATING MENU (page 10), we chose "2" from the POINT SPREAD / POWER RATING
Main menu, "2=RUN SYSTEM 3 : POINT SPREADS / POWER RATINGS". This invokes
the predict option. You can choose this for week one ONLY, file updates in
other programs are necessary. You must update your files weekly. You are
asked for the week and whether you want automatic printing of the output.
There will always be an output file for your reference (by using option 3
View/Print, from the page 4 menu).

** The system will calculate all scores for all matchups and create the output
file. It is YOUR job to then manually compare the actual Las Vegas lines
with the output from POINT SPREADS / POWER RATINGS (1989 below). Note that
only the teams/scores appear on output, but I have added the "worksheet" on
how to decipher and create your plays. I do something similar when I do my
own. I print out the file and then do my calculations in pencil on the
output sheet.

** Again, I want to state that the calculations to find plays are to this
point, manually done by you the user. This will be a planned enhancement
for next year! Don't miss out. REMEMBER: the difference must be 4.5
points or greater to become a play for POINTSPREADS / POWER RATINGS. Do
not give the wrong team the value. Follow the examples on previous page
for the actual week 5 of 1989. The greatest difference becomes your first
play, the next highest is second and so on. Ties in highest values are
rated as such, do not fill in. For example, here are five of the highest
values in a hypothetical week -values of 10, 10, 6.5, 6.5 and 6. The two
values of 10 are the 1st pick, the two 6.5 values are the THIRD pick, as
there is NO second pick! The fifth pick would have been the 6, but I have
not tracked down that far. You can expect less plays though with this
program.
** After entering the necessary values to return to the POINTSPREADS / POWER
RATINGS MENU on page 10, we chose "3" from the POINTSPREADS / POWER RATINGS
Main menu, "3=VIEW / PRINT OUTPUT FROM SYSTEM 3". You will be prompted
for a week to view then you will asked if you wish to have the file
printed. Again, to use this option, you must have access to your DOS's
MORE command.
====MAIN MENU CHOICE THREE (3)
BEST OF THE NFL TRENDS is made up of many features. On the NFL Trends menu
(shown on the next page), you will use the following:
Choice One will update/check the vital files that are used for output.
Choice Two will run the Prediction mode. You enter the week to be
predicted and decide if you want automatic printing on your printer when
done. THE BEST OF THE NFL TRENDS (my own NFL Trends) is engineered to
analyze each matchup and execute a trend analysis for both teams and for
all matchups. The trends are based on home/away games favorites/dogs
statuses and points for/allowed. Many trends are quite popular and others
are obscure. IMPORTANT: Not all trends will remain profitable for all
seasons. You must pay careful attention to which trends are hot and which
trends are cold and go the opposite way! Remember that the theory of large
numbers states that all trends are short term events and that they will all
average out in the long run analysis. But if a trend is hot go WITH it.
If it is cold, they play AGAINST its suggested team. All trends had to
have a minimum win percentage of 58% to be programed in. Some may never
appear during the season due to their conditions not being present. You
can expect many trends to continue their winning ways, for example TREND 26
was 17-8 (68%) in 1989. Some trends will lose too, for example TREND 12
was 2-11 (15.4%), but playing against its selections would have yielded an
84.6% win percentage!!! YOU must be aware during the season. Use your
analytical ability and GAMBLER'S MATE!
Choice Three will view or print the output that has been created for the
next week of action. BUT it needs to have YOUR DOS's MORE in your path or
else copy it on your GAMBLER'S MATE floppy or directory.

system based on the schedule. Remember it is a 16 game, 17 week season.
Each team is given a week off for rest. Next year it may be a 16 game, 18

====MAIN MENU CHOICE FIVE (5)
YEARLY UPDATE is made up of many maintenance. But, unless necessary, this
program should not be used!! It may be necessary, because of a conflict in
the baseball playoffs' schedule, to reenter two weeks of the season. It
has happened the last two years. A team will be forced, due to baseball,
to swap the home field with their opponent for one later in the season.
Usually it occurs when both teams are within their own division and since
they play twice they just swap home fields. But it does impact two weeks.

Choice One will create or change the new Weekly Schedule. If you must
change weeks of the season, as explained on previous page, you MUST BACKUP
all files to another part of the hard disk or another floppy. If you do
not, you risk completely disabling your GAMBLER'S MATE: Football Edition
1990 until the data files are replaced! If the unthinkable occurs,
replacement files can be purchased for nominal fee (read REGISTER.DOC).
-To proceed in changing the Weekly Schedule files:
1) Start YEARLY UPDATE program;
2) From its main menu, chose "5=CHECK SYSTEMS: ALL FILES";
3) Enter 1 for WKLY_SCH.
4) Enter 90 as the year digits;
5) Enter 1 to CHECK DATA;
6) Now enter a week that must be changed. Record the numerical
values for each matchup, carefully keeping track of each upper
(away team) and lower (home team) and also noting which matchups
need to be changed;
7) Enter 0 to exit;
8) Enter 0 to exit;
9) Enter 0 to exit to main menu
10) From the main menu, chose "1=WKLY_SCH.: Weekly Schedule ";
11) Enter 90 as the year digits;
12) Enter 0 (zero) as file is already created;
13) Choose 1 to update the file;
14) Choose I for Independent weekly processing;
15) Choose O for One at a time;
16) Now enter a week that must be changed. Carefully, enter the
correct team number for the away and home teams, incorporating
the new changes. Remember, for the weeks that a team can be
Idle, the team number gets 50 added to it. Idle teams range
from 51 (Atlanta) to 78 (Washington). See last page off manual.
Choices Two through Six should NOT be utilized. Again for your own
protection, I do NOT recommend exploring in YEARLY UPDATE! All registered
users will get more information on YEARLY UPDATE if they request it.
This concludes the GAMBLER'S MATE: Football Edition 1990 software package.
I request your feedback and suggestions on how to make this a better
package. Again I state that GAMBLER'S MATE: Football Edition 1990 is
shareware. Alot of hours (years) has gone into the development of the
GAMBLER'S MATE, registration if found useful is expected.

****** Coming Soon:
-GAMBLER'S MATE: Thoroughbred Edition Dosage Master
This program is still under construction but more than 60% completed.
Dosage is a system that attempts to predict the distance potential of
horses based on certain sires in the first four generations of their
pedigrees. These certain sires are called chefs-de-race (french for
"chiefs of the breed").
Chefs are divided into five aptitudinal categories: Brilliant,
Intermediate, Classic, Solid and Professional. The categories correspond
to a range of distance potential from Brilliant (highest speed and lowest
stamina) to Professional (lowest speed and highest stamina). Classic
represents the "ideal" balance of speed and stamina. Many chefs are
assigned to two categories and their "points" split between those two
categories.
I have found that this program, even in its rawest form, has a distinct
advantage in predicting the three year old triple crown races and their
preps. If you have not heard, this method is undefeated since 1929 (yes!)
in the Kentucky Derby. Horses with the allowable range of acceptable
numbers (Dosage Index of 4.0 or less and Center of Distribution of 1.25 or
less) that are calculated, have never lost a derby! Quite an impressive
streak, wouldn't you say?! The system had Unbridled (1990 Kentucky Derby
winner) who paid $21.60 for a single $2 wager.
Dosage Master features the ability to calculate, display, print and save
any thoroughbred's dosage index, dosage profile and center of distribution.
Send me a postcard if interested. It will be incentive to finish and
publicly release Dosage Master. Let me know what BBS you read this on and
also your experiences in horse racing and using the dosage method.
