The A.F.S. Editor
The AFS Editor was written to help edit and create planes for use
with the 'Advanced Flight Simulator' (also know as 'Advanced Flight
Trainer' ) by Electronic Arts. This program was written in Turbo
Pascal on an IBM XT and should work on any IBM Compatable.
AFS/AFT keeps all of the aircraft data in small ASCII files with
the extension '.fly'. This program will read this information and
allow you to change any one of the variables. The data has been
divided into 4 basic areas; Basic components (A/C Name & Type, wing
strengths, etc.), Ground components (Landing limitations, steering,
etc), Pitch/Roll/Yaw components (what actually affect a planes handling
characteristics), and Lift/Drag components. When selecting a variable
to edit, a small description will appear at the bottom of the screen
explaining what that particular variable does.
If you find any bugs, inconsistancies, or outright mistakes,
please leave me a message on Exec PC BBS (414-964-5160). Feel free to
do whatever you wish with this program, just give me some mention
credit for the work I've done. As for donations, if you find this
program useful, then use it! Don't worry about registering or anything
like that. If you do use this program, and are having trouble sleeping
at night knowing you haven't made any contribution, let me know and I'm
sure we can work something out!?!?

I have based this program on long hours of sitting and
experimenting with each variable, the same work done by others and some
information provided by E.A. If you find any of it 'ify' or completely
wrong, I would appreciate hearing from you. My thanks to all of you
who spent long hours staring at these numbers trying to figure out what
each one does.
How To Use AFSEDIT
The following files are needed to run AFSEDIT,
Screen? (1 - 4)
AfsData.dat
AfsEdit.com
These files must all be in the current directory, although they
need not be in the AFS/AFT directory. The program will ask you where
it can find the .fly files it needs.
When the program first fires up, you will be asked where the .fly
files are. You can type in any valid path name up to 25 characters in
length. The path name MUST end in a '\'.
You are then asked for an 'Old Filename' and a 'New Filename'.
If you type in just an Old Filename, the program will edit that file.
If you type in both an Old & New Filename, the program will copy the
Old file to a file named by New Filename and then edit that one. This
is used for creating a completely new plane (based on a previous one).
If neither Filename is enter, the program will end.
Hitting the Enter key will scroll through the 3 fields. Once you
have typed in the names you want, hitting the Esc key allows the
program to continue. For editing, the Bksp & Del keys are used.
Once the names have been confirmed (assuming the program finds the
files you named), Screen 1 appears and you can begin editing. The
following keys are used to move around:
F1 = Screen 1
F2 = Screen 2
F3 = Screen 3
F4 = Screen 4
F5 = select the previous variable. (Up)
F6 = select the next variable. (Down)
Esc = Confirms all data and saves it in the appropriate file and
ends the program.
Ctrl-X will cancel all editing, no file will be saved and the
program will end.
Well, that's all there is to the documentation. While this
program has been tested and a fair amount of error-trapping exists, I'm
sure it is possable to crash it. If you find any of these bugs, please
let me know and I will attempt to correct it.
