This software was written as an attempt to aid scientists ( and
other academicians ) in their not-always-so-pleasant task of organizing
journal references. The package is designed to build a MAIN reference
file which is to include all references which may be of some benifit to
the researcher. This MAIN file may be edited to correct entry errors,
sorted into alphabetical order and have references selected from it to
produce files for articles. The ARTICLE files can also be sorted and may
be formatted to meet specific journal requirements.
The MAIN file can be searched for keywords to locate all
references pertaining to a given subject, or searched by author. File
names are user-selected so you can have more than one Main and Article file
if you so desire.
Hopefully, the main menu is self-explanatory. There are some
further improvements I have planned but I wanted to get this distributed
before the start of the Fall, '86 term. The format to enter authors must
be followed closely as the authors' names and initials must be flip-
flopped for some journals. Formats for additional journals will be added
as requested, however some formats may be incompatible. Ecological
Monographs uses full journal names in its references while most other
journals use abbreviations. This software only uses the journal names as
you enter them at the beginning, so if you want full names you'll have
to enter them originally.
I suggest making a copy of your MAIN files (using copy under MSDOS)
before really messing with them, i.e. sorting or selecting for articles,
as all is still in a prototype stage and you wouldn't want to enter a long
list of references twice.
Feel free to copy the software and pass it along to your colleagues.
If it becomes widely used then I will develope merge routines so you can
exchange lists of references. Send copies of references from other journals
you use so I can add them to the journal format list. I have used a few
routines which prohibit me from distributing the source code, therefor you
have only the compiled program. Play with the software awhile and if you feel
that it will truly help, might I suggest sending along a small contribution
( $10 - $20 ) for the cause.
