In ACROSTIX, a Quotation is placed in a grid with separators between the
words. Only the letters of the alphabet and the dash(-), apostrophe('),
period(.) or questionmark(?) are allowed in the Quotation. The Acrostic
grid is either three or four rows deep, depending on the length of the
Quotation. The minimum size is 31 and the maximum is 100 letters and
spaces. The letters in each column are mixed up and placed in rows
below the blank Acrostic. The purpose is to choose letters from the
columns in the lower rows to fill the blanks above, until the Quotation
has been re-constructed. Where the separators appear in the Quotation, a
letter will be inserted into that column. These letters will be left over
when the Quotation is completed, and will spell out a word or phrase.
To play, type ACROPLAY, choose an Acrostix file, then choose an Acrostic
from that file. Press F1 to find out how to move, pick up letters, etc
and what the Train, Cheat and Auto Modes do.
Creating Acrostix is fun. Just find an interesting quotation between 31
and 100 letters and spaces long. ( Remember only letters of the alphabet,
spaces, apostrophe('), period(.), dash(-) and questionmark (?) can be used.
Type ACROMAKE for the create module, and type in or select a filename.
Enter your name ( as the creator of the Acrostix file ) and press F10.
Now choose ADD, type in your quotation and press F10. The program will tell
you if it can be formatted. Not all quotations can, because of the way the
lines split. Now type in a sentence to give the player a clue about the
quote and press F10.
Next you will be shown the formatted Quotation. Press a key and you will
be asked for a word or phrase to provide the letters which will be put
in place of the separators. Press F10 then type in a description of the
word or phrase you have just entered. Press F10 then Save the Acrostic.
And that's it! You can add as many Acrostics as you want to the file ( up
to 200) but I suggest you limit the file to 20 or 30 or the file gets too
big.
ACROMAKE produces two files. The first ends in .ASR and the second one
has the same name but ends in .ACR. The .ASR file is the source code so
that you can change a Quotation later ( - but if you do, you will lose
the word/phrase that uses up the separators and the description ). The
.ACR file is the one that is used to play ACROSTIX. So if you want to
share your creations with others, they only need the ACROPLAY module and
the .ACR files.
Why not upload some to your local Bulletin boards? Or to Compuserve
(the IBMNEW Forum - WordGame library or the Education Forum - ShareWare
library). Identify your files with the key word ACROSTIX so others can
find them easily. And watch for more of ours on Compuserve!
Have fun!
