  2.                               This exercise will
  3.                                   help you to
  4.                               increase the number
  5.                                of words that you
  6.                                 can see at each
  7.                                  eye fixation
  8.                                  as you read.
  9.                              When you read a line
  10.                               of print, you don't
  11.                              need to look at each
  12.                                word on the line.
  13.                           You can develop the ability
  14.                          to see half a line, or maybe
  15.                   even the entire line, with just one "look."
  16.                                 (That last line
  17.                               was a little long!)
  18.                              Remember, don't look
  19.                                at the first word
  20.                                 or the last one
  21.                                   on a line.
  22.                                   If you do,
  23.                               you are just seeing
  24.                             empty space with about
  25.                               half your eye span.
  26.                               Look at the second
  27.                              or third word at the
  28.                             beginning of the line,
  29.                               and when you get to
  30.                               the second or third
  31.                               word from the end,
  32.                              go to the next line.
  33.                          Of course, increased eye span
  34.                               is just one factor
  35.                                in improving your
  36.                               reading speed, but
  37.                               it is a big factor.
  38.                                 If you look at
  39.                             each word as you read,
  40.                                you won't be able
  41.                                to read much more
  42.                                 than about 200
  43.                                words per minute.
  44.                               By learning to read
  45.                              several words at each
  46.                                  eye fixation,
  47.                               breaking the habit
  48.                                 of looking back
  49.                                at lines you have
  50.                                already read, and
  51.                                moving your eyes
  52.                               faster as you read,
  53.                                you can probably
  54.                                read four or five
  55.                                times faster than
  56.                              your beginning rate--
  57.                                maybe even more!
  58.                              (One of my students,
  59.                            after the reading course,
  60.                             could read a paperback
  61.                                book of about 120
  62.                                  pages in just
  63.                                10 or 12 minutes,
  64.                         with excellent comprehension.)
  65.                               We know that speed
  66.                            is not the only important
  67.                            thing in better reading,
  68.                              but it is important.
  69.                              When you read faster,
  70.                                you will be able
  71.                              to preview, read, and
  72.                           review a reading selection
  73.                                in the same time
  74.                               it previously took
  75.                                to read it once.

  77.                                 You can create
  78.                                 files like this
  79.                              for reading practice
  80.                             with a word processor.
  81.                              It's especially easy
  82.                              with a word processor
  83.                               that centers lines,
  84.                               as most of them do.
