  12. This diskette contains the ZIPKEY zipcode directory and keyboard 
  13. enhancement program.  Please feel free to distribute the program 
  14. by uploading it to bulletin-board systems, and by copying and 
  15. distributing the diskette to anyone interested.

  17. You can run the program by putting ZIPKEY.EXE and ZIPKEY.OVL 
  18. into your current directory, and typing ZIPKEY to the MS-DOS 
  19. command prompt.

  22. What's New In This Version
  23.  
  24. There were a couple of annoying bugs in V2.00, which I have
  25. fixed in V2.02.
  26.  
  27. With V2.00 I have added telephone area codes to ZIPKEY's
  28. database.
  29.  
  30. Now when you specify a zipcode or a city, you'll also get
  31. the telephone area code displayed in ZIPKEY's window.  You
  32. can "play back" the area code with the T specifier in your
  33. hotkey or exit key configuration.

  35. Conversely, you can type a left bracket [ followed by an
  36. area code to ZIPKEY's window to obtain the location of the
  37. area code.

  39. Of course, the data itself is updated every month.  The 
  40. evaluation data is constrained to be at least six months old, so 
  41. that you're now getting the data provided to registered users 
  42. six months ago.

  45. File Name Conventions for BBS Uploading
  46.  
  47. If you distribute files in a compressed format, using PKZIP, 
  48. ARC, ZOO, or a similar program, I recommend that the evaluation 
  49. ZIPKEY.EXE file and the manual ZIPKEY.DOC/ZPROG.DOC be packed 
  50. together into one file, and the ZIPKEY.OVL file be provided as a 
  51. second file.

  53. If you are a BBS sysop, with the ability to delete files on your 
  54. BBS, you can maintain the single name ZIPKEY for the package. 
  55. The compressed EXE-and-manual file can have the extension (.ZIP, 
  56. .ARC, etc.) reflecting the compressing program used.  The OVL 
  57. file can keep its name ZIPKEY.OVL. ZIPKEY.OVL does not need to 
  58. be compressed-- it's already so compact that there is little or 
  59. no further gain from compression.

  61. If you are uploading to a BBS on which you cannot delete the 
  62. previous version, I suggest that the names contain the version 
  63. information. The EXE-and-manual file should be named ZKxxx, where 
  64. xxx is the ZIPKEY.EXE version number -- for example, ZK202.ZIP for 
  65. ZIPKEY V2.02e.  The ZIPKEY.OVL file should be stored using a 
  66. compression program (not for the compression, which is minimal, 
  67. but so that the file will be named ZIPKEY.OVL again when it is 
  68. extracted). The compressed OVL file should be named ZKmmyy, 
  69. where mm is the 2-digit month and yy is the year of the ZIPKEY 
  70. database -- for example, ZK1090.ZIP for the October, 1990 
  71. version of the data.

  79. Note that the data file does NOT contain the program version 
  80. number in its comment line.  I release new data files more often 
  81. than new program versions, so that the data file is not married 
  82. to the program version number.  People can download new data 
  83. files even if they already have the latest program version.
