  14.             A few  changes have been introduced with this new version of
  15.             the Floppy  Almanac, and  a few  bugs have  been chased out.
  16.             Due to  incompatibilities in  the BIOS routines of different
  17.             brands of  machines, there  appeared to  be no  end  to  the
  18.             problems which  were occurring  with the  assembly  language
  19.             routines that  did the  screen clearing.   This  problem has
  20.             been solved  by the  elimination of  these  routines.    The
  21.             Floppy Almanac  now has  only 3  assembly language routines.
  22.             The rest  of the  program is  entirely in  FORTRAN, and  the
  23.             screen clearing  is done  by  writing  blank  lines  to  the
  24.             screen.  It's not as elegant, but it works.  A major problem
  25.             in the Navigation section was caused by the disappearance of
  26.             a line  of code,  causing a  random value to be used for the
  27.             parallax in altitude of the Moon.  This missing line of code
  28.             has been  restored.  A couple of minor irritations have been
  29.             removed also.   All  of  the  box  drawing  characters  that
  30.             appeared in the tabular output have been removed.  This will
  31.             greatly  speed  printing  of  output  files  on  dot  matrix
  32.             printers.   The message  stating whether  or not the default
  33.             file FA.DFT  was read  has been  eliminated.   Finally,  the
  34.             cursor size  is never changed; it is only turned off and on.
  35.             When the  program ends,  the cursor  is left  at the default
  36.             size.

  38.             The requirements  for running  this version  of  the  Floppy
  39.             Almanac remain the same as the previous editions:  IBM PC or
  40.             clone with 256k RAM running MS DOS 2.0 or higher.  There are

  52.             The first file in the list is the executable file comprising
  53.             the Floppy  Almanac, and  is the only necessary file.  It is
  54.             executed by  simply typing  the first  four characters, that
  55.             is, FA91 (or fa91) for the 1991 Floppy Almanac.  The program
  56.             will then  begin execution,  and the Floppy Almanac masthead
  57.             will scroll  onto the screen followed by the main menu.  The
  58.             Floppy Almanac  is completely  self-contained, and  once the
  59.             main menu  appears the  disk can  be removed from the drive;
  60.             no further disk reads are required for standard execution.

  73.             The other  files on  the disk are auxiliary files, which are
  74.             not used  by most  applications.  Most of these files relate
  75.             to the  optional facility for redefining the star catalog to
  76.             be used by the Floppy Almanac.

  78.             The file  named SAMPLE.TXT  is a small sample of a formatted
  79.             star catalog  to be  used as  a  model  for  creating  other
  80.             catalogs.   The large  star catalog,  STAR1.CAT, is  the FK5
  81.             catalog.

  83.             Since the  Floppy Almanac  is menu-  and prompt-driven,  the
  84.             novice user  can usually  "feel" his  way around its various
  85.             options and  obtain useful  information.    One  can  become
  86.             fairly proficient in using the Floppy Almanac simply through
  87.             a series  of trial-and-error runs.  Nevertheless, there is a
  88.             significant amount  of  information  about  how  the  Floppy
  89.             Almanac works  which is  not  obvious  but  which  is  quite
  90.             important  for   all  but   the  most  casual  user.    This
  91.             information  is   contained  in   the  paper   documentation
  92.             distributed by the  National  Audiovisual  Center with  each
  93.             Floppy Almanac disk.

  103.             includes two MS-DOS diskettes (5.25 and 3.5 inch) and a copy

  116.             The Observatory is presently developing a series of software
  117.             packages  that will include  the functions of Floppy Almanac
  118.             along  with  the  Air, Nautical  and  Astronomical  Almanacs
  119.             presently available in print form only.  When these programs
  120.             are complete,  a single disk set will be offered through the       
  121.             National Audiovisual Center.   The anticipated  availability
  122.             date is fall 1991.
