  6. Well, guess what showed up today on GEnie, courtesy of one of
  7. our Japanese users....

  9. A completely PUBLIC DOMAIN, FREE, NO DONATIONS REQUESTED new
  10. archive compression program. It's called LHARC and it was just
  11. uploaded a few days ago by one of our NEC PC-VAN Japanese users.
  12. "So what?" you may say... Read on.

  14. LHARC compresses files up to 15 percent better than anything
  15. PKZIP has been able to produce so far, even when using -eb4 and
  16. -ea4. No, I'm not kidding. It's better than ARC, ZOO, PAK and
  17. ZIP put together. We are running preliminary tests on it, but it
  18. looks like it beats ZIP by a mile, not to mention other
  19. utilities available out there. It's slower than ARC and ZOO, but
  20. it happens to be faster than ZIP.

  22. Now, if the Sysop will be so kind as to allow me to upload it as
  23. a self-extracting .COM archive (yes, it even makes
  24. self-extracting archives WITHOUT external utilities, and the
  25. whole program is a mere 20k in size!!!), I'll be happy to upload
  26. it. I won't upload it as an .ARC, .ZIP, .ZOO or .PAK file,
  27. though. In my opinion I think it deserves an exception.

  41. LHARC compresses tighter, but takes more time. Should keep PK
  42. working hard.
