HCAP - Version 1.0 10-11-1990
HCAP was written for those golfers that want to get at a handicap
without having to spend gobs of time entering hole by hole data.
Version 1.0 of this program was written in under 5 hours so
please do not expect lots of fancy colors, error-catching input
screens, shadowed message boxes or anything else that people
generally equate with well-written software. If you find bugs,
I want to know about them because I am serious about supporting
this product. After a few dozen revisions, this will be a very
reliable tool - although it will never be very attractive. I
hope you can live with that.
One of my other motivations for this program was to generate
interest for the DBK Handicap Card. This is a credit card sized
laminated item that fits nicely into a wallet or the pouch of
your golf bag. One side contains green printing that identifies
the card holder as having an official handicap. The other side
is the actual handicap information including up to the last 20
rounds played. These cards are produced here and then mailed
to you in whatever intervals you desire. Generally, a few times
per season is adequate.
Here's how the card service works. After you have collected a
number of rounds for you and a few of your friends, you send me
a file called HCAP.DAT. This file contains all of the
information that is printed on one side of each card. This
file can be mailed to me on a 360K floppy or transmitted via
modem to the DBK BBS. Each player card costs $3 each. A check
must accompany the first order. Subsequent orders may be placed
via modem.
HCAP was written by me, E.kasey kasemodel. I am the author of
DBK and DBK/LT. DBK is a golf stats package for individuals and
groups while LT is designed specifically for league use. Both
programs require hole by hole data entry and offer handicap
information only as one single by-product. If you are looking
for more than just handicap output, be sure to review these
programs.
Everything that I write is 110% shareware. That means that the
program that you receive via shareware sources is the same one
that you will receive when you register. (Except that the
registered version is probably more current.) Shareware means
that you are supposed to send me money if you continue to use the
program. That seems fair. If I used something that you spent
considerable time constructing, I would pay you for it.
Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way - but that too is ok.
To be honest, I write this stuff because I enjoy the creation
process. The fact that I occasionally get paid for it makes it
just that much better.
I know that you were expecting to read something here that told
you how to operate HCAP. Nope. Not a thing. But here are
a few pointers:
AUTO-ADJUSTING
The program is darn easy to operate. One item that comes to mind
that you need to know is that HCAP does not auto-adjust for you.
Scores that you enter should be pre-adjusted according to
equitable slope control.
CODES
When entering scores, the last item requests a code. For
example, when you play 2 nine hole rounds back to back, this
becomes eligible for an 18 entry. You should make that with a
code C which means combined. If you play a round outside your
home course, you should use the A code. Those are about the only
two that are really common. If you can think of any others that
you would like to use, go ahead and record them. Just remember
that only the 1st code will be included on the card. The code
field will hold up to 6 characters.
SETTING DEFAULTS
When you run the program the first time, you should select
the Default settings option. (Press the D key). Enter all
of the questions so that each time you are entering data for
players you do not have to manually key in this stuff. For
example, chances are that most of the people that you will be
tracking handicaps for live in the same city. They probably
share a common home course which has a rating and slope that
would normally be entered frequently. Do this once, then each
time that you run HCAP, this default information will auto-
matically be entered each time you press the ENTER key on
a field requesting that data.
e.g., When HCAP asks for the course rating, you will see your
default appear in (). Pressing ENTER by itself will use that
value. Note that city, state and home course prompts will not
show your defaults.
WHAT TO DO NEXT
When the defaults have been set, the first thing to do is enter
all of the players into the database. This will involve entering
names, addresses and home course information for each person that
you will be tracking. Full address information is critical if
you want cards mailed directly to those players. Otherwise,
only the name and home course is necessary.
POSTING SCORES
You can post a score only AFTER a player has been added to the
database. If you try to post one to a non-existent player, HCAP
will remind you that this cannot be done. Rather than using
some fancy up-down arrow key controlled scroll boxes to select
player names, all you have to do is enter enough of a name to
make it unique. For example, if you have only one Jim in your
database, then enter Jim will suffice. HCAP will produce a post
screen for the first match that it finds. For example, if you
have two players named Mike, you should use as many letters of
the last name as necessary to differentiate between the two.
Once at the posting screen, enter A to add scores. Should you
discover that an old score was posted incorrectly, enter the
number of the round (1..20) and re-enter all of the information.
IMPORTANT! Rounds are not saved to disk when they become visible
on the posting screen. This means that you could enter 20 rounds,
and exit without saving a thing! After you finish posting, you
must send the data to a disk data file by enter F.
As soon as 5 rounds have been added, the handicap results will
appear on the right side of the screen. At present, there is no
way to produce a handicap for less than 5 rounds.
