  160.          when access is initiated from the main menu. Additionally

  188.                        HELP FOR THE FIRST TIME USER
  189.  
  190.     If this is your first time to use a database product, Data + Plus will
  191.     be an enjoyable experience. If you are an experienced user, you will
  192.     find the List, Display, Report, and Label FAST and EASY to use. All
  193.     users will like the fact that repeated search on a specific criteria
  194.     will not have to be entered each time the search is done. The
  195.     experienced user can go on to these functions found in the XECUTE part
  196.     of the screen. There is HELP in each one of these functions. The FIRST
  197.     TIME USER will need to learn to CREATE a database, create a REPORT, and
  198.     create a LABEL.
  199.  
  200.     When you first enter this Program you are presented with the Mode
  201.     Selection Header, from here you select the Mode you want by either
  202.     pressing the first character of each Mode; or by using the cursor
  203.     arrows.
  204.     NOTE: If you forget to put in a disk in the drive, you will get the DOS
  205.     prompt for ABORT, RETRY, IGNORE. Put the disk in the drive and answer the
  206.     prompt with <R> for retry. DP+ will continue with the Drive Select Mode.

  250.          This box will appear when the [D] is pressed. If you are
  251.          going to use the [A] drive, which is a floppy drive
  252.          selection, press [A]. C & D are hard drive selections.
  253.          Depending on where Data + Plus has been installed, choose
  254.          the drive selection that has DEMO.DBF on it. The next BOX
  255.          to appear is for you to choose the NAME of the DATABASE to
  256.          USE. Pick DEMO.DBF as the database to use.
  257.          The next BOX to appear is to choose an INDEX to use with
  258.          the DATABASE you chose. Even though there are only two records
  259.          in the database press [Y] to the question. Next the index box
  260.          appears select DEMO.NTX. The next BOX to appear is to SET A
  261.          FILTER to use with the scan mode. This will allow you to view
  262.          only the records you want to edit. So answer [Y] and this screen
  263.          will appear.

  386.          "FIELDNAME" is the name you give to an entry, which is used as
  387.          the description (ie name, address, city, state, etc.) The only
  388.          way you can leave a space between words in the CREATE Mode is by
  389.          the use of the UNDERLINE key (eg, FIRST NAME must be entered as
  390.          FIRST_NAME). This is the ONLY SEPARATION SYMBOL ALLOWED.

  393.          "TYPE" allows you to determine whether the "Fieldname" is:
  394.  
  395.        C -- Character; N -- Numeric; D -- Date; L -- Logical; M -- Memo.

  397.             C -- Character will allow both Alpha and numeric input.

  399.             N -- Numeric will allow mathematical functions.
  400.  
  401.             D -- Date will setup an 8 "WIDTH" field as follows --/--/--.

  403.             L -- Logical allows 1 "WIDTH" field for  T -- True;

  406.             M -- Memo.  This Command will take approximately 4OOO bytes

  436.         CREATE OR MODIFY
  437.  
  438.          The CREATE utility allows you to define the structure of a new
  439.          database (.DBF) file or MODIFY the structure of an existing one.
  440.          When MODIFY is invoked, it searches the directory for all the
  441.          database files present. If it does not find any, you will be told
  442.          by a message that there are no databases. In the CREATE mode it
  443.          goes in to create a new file and prompts you for the fieldname,
  444.          type the width of each field name you wish to create. If the field
  445.          is numeric, you are also prompted for the number of decimal places.
  446.          (Remember the decimal counts as one byte of field width)
  447.  
  448.          If the field already exists, you will be warned that this is a
  449.          duplicate fieldname. When exiting the new structure you will be asked
  450.          to name the new database. These are the editing keys for: (CREATE)
  451.

  454.          2.  Left/Right           - left/right one field at a time

  532.          The second method to add records is to press [S] for Scan. When in
  533.          the scan mode if it is a new database the first record will already
  534.          be appended (means BLANK record).
  535.          In the right corner of the screen you will see "Record 1/0  <New>".
  536.          Pressing the down arrow will allow you to continue adding new records.
  537.          If entering your records you leave one out, press <F10> a box will
  538.          appear in the right corner. Choose [Insert] this will insert a blank
  539.          record at the record you are currently on. Be sure that you are
  540.          on the spot you want the blank record inserted. If you goof just
  541.          press the delete key and it will say <Deleted>. When finished and
  542.          you wish to remove any records marked <Deleted>. Press <F10> again
  543.          and choose [Pack] and answer [Y] to the question. This will remove
  544.          the unwanted records. If you are logged in with an INDEX file
  545.          Data + Plus will automatically Re-indexed the database.

  602.          These are all self-explanatory. The only one that might throw
  603.          you is the one called PLAIN PAGE, which simply means that the
  604.          report will not print with a page number or the date when used.

  617. F3 <KEY> Second Screen is used to select a report which would allow you
  618.          to Sub-Total information. Don't be confused here! This is not
  619.          strictly a mathematical function. It can also be used to
  620.          group any form of information. For example, you have a database
  621.          listing several hundred people living on different streets in
  622.          different towns, etc. You want everyone living in HOUSTON --
  623.          so you enter the Fieldname CITY in the first BOX, then move
  624.          down to where it asks you for the HEADING and type in what you
  625.          want to be printed in your REPORT. Your REPORT would then
  626.          organize everyone by CITY before it printed. If you want to
  627.          sub-group it further, you can do so in the next area of
  628.          Sub-Totals. The SECOND SCREEN IS NOT A COMMONLY USED FUNCTION.

  630. F4 <KEY> The Third Screen is for choice of field and column headings.

  632.         CONTENTS:is the actual Fieldname description in the database
  633.          which can be obtained from your printed list. CONTENTS: can
  634.          have more than one Fieldname (eg, FIRST_NAME+LAST_NAME+ADDRESS).

  680.          You can create a new report form or modify an existing one. You
  681.          are NOT prompted with error tracking when you are working with the
  682.          report, so it would be beneficial to have a printed copy of your

  686.          file in another work area, you need to make sure that you are

  926.          Scan is a quick way to see several pieces of information from the
  927.          database in ROWS and COLUMNS similar to a spreadsheet. You can
  928.          EDIT, DELETE, and ADD information. The <RETURN> KEY is the most
  929.          important key to remember as it allows you to edit one field at a
  930.          time by pressing it. The area above the Field_Names will indicate
  931.          if the record is <Deleted>, by pressing the [DEL] key again it will
  932.          un-delete or the proper term is "RECALL" the record. Packing the
  933.          file will remove all records marked for deletion. To mention again
  934.          the DOWN ARROW  will add a new record. The <New> indicator will
  935.          appear in the right corner. The SCAN is a MORE POWERFUL FUNCTION
  936.          in Data + Plus than the "BROWSE" mode in two other will known
  937.          products on the market. ALSO REMEMBER: The FILTER function when
  938.          first logging in from the drive selection. This was where you were
  939.          asked for an index, then if you want to SET A FILTER. The filter
  940.          does exactly what it sounds like; it allows you to SCAN only the

  988.          The SEEK FUNCTION is totally different. It works off the index that the
  989.          database is indexed on. If you are using the SCAN without an index the
  990.          <F10> box will display the SEEK command like this:( -Off- ). If you
  991.          are using a multiple index for Example: LAST_NAME+CITY SEEK will
  992.          normally return a message "Not Found". SEEK has trouble with the
  993.          multiple index. There are databases that are designed that the
  994.          multiple works very well. If you can not find the information bring
  995.          the power of the LOCATE command to use, IF the record exist!! it will
  996.          find it. One more thing about SEEK you must type in the complete what
  997.          ever it is in the box provided. Example: MARY. You type only the data
  998.          that the index is on. If index where on city TYPE: DALLAS not D.
  999.          Watch for upper and lower case. If you have the city like: Dallas,
  1000.          then type it that way; or you will not be able to LOCATE OR SEEK the
  1001.          specific record.

  1003. *Pointer*The GOTO FUNCTION is to go to a specific record number. It is handy
  1004.          if you have printed a list of records and want to update just those
  1005.          specific records. Since the list function gives you the FIELD_NAME
  1006.          for the HEADER and a Record # in the left margin.
  1007.          Note: ^PgUp go to TOP of file; ^PgDn go to BOTTOM of file.
  1008. *Pointer*The SKIP FUNCTION will simply skip from one record number to another.
  1009.          Let's say you are on record # 125 and wish to be at record # 7125 it
  1010.          would take a while to PgDn that far. So in the box type 7000 no comma
  1011.          and almost instantly you will be at record 7125. Of course it is much
  1012.          faster if your working on a hard drive and an 80286 or 80386.

  1014.          The PACK FUNCTION again is to remove any records marked for deletion.
  1015.          It also Re-Indexes if the index is ON, and also Re-Builds the file on
  1016.          the disk. This is a function built into the ADD MODE so when you are
  1017.          finished adding records it automatically PACKS the database so as to
  1018.          Re-Build it, but it does not use the index at all. The records will
  1019.          be exactly as you entered them.

  1895.          Remember that when the FIELD TYPE changes from Numeric to Character,
  1896.          Date to Character, or Logical to Character you must use the above
  1897.          procedure to insure a proper transfer of data. Also changing the
