  297.                    of CATALOG ON A DISK the compressed file MUST

  300.                    c)  You must have written permission from EmmaSoft to
  301.                    distribute the program.

  303.                    d)  There must be a clear explanation of shareware in
  304.                    your catalog, including that shareware is copyrighted and
  305.                    not free, that users must register after trying out the
  306.                    program for a trial period.

  352.                               CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

  355.  
  356. 1.1 What is this thing for????!
  357.  
  358. CATALOG ON A DISK makes it easy for  your customers see your
  359. catalog on their computers and order from it.  It is so easy to use that
  360. customers won't put off ordering from you.  Also a disk catalog
  361. represents a tremendous savings in production costs.  It's simple for
  362. your customers to find what items they want and generate an order
  363. form that can be mailed, faxed, or sent to you by modem.  You can
  364. configure your catalog's colors, opening screen and the header above
  365. the section menu, as well as the order form.
  366.  
  367. Each category can hold 159 items, including their order number,
  368. name, price and a 4 line description of the product.  You may have
  369. a total of 99 categories (for a total of 15741 items, disk space
  370. permitting).  Your catalog is kept in compressed files so more
  371. product listings can fit on the disk.  These are very easy to create on
  372. any word processor or text editor that can save files in pure ascii
  373. format.  Then use CATALOG-ON-A-DISK to compress the files.
  374.  
  375. 1.2 DEFINITIONS
  376.  
  377. In this manual a few terms are used:
  378.  
  379. Ascii Delimited             A file that has been saved in pure ascii
  380.                             (American Standard Code for Information
  381.                             Exchange) format (most word processors, data
  382.                             bases, etc. can do this), that has one or more
  383.                             data fields delimited by quotation marks and
  384.                             commas.
  385. Catalog File                A compressed file containing catalog
  386.                             information in five line blocks, with the
  387.                             extension ".CM" plus a short title file of the
  388.                             same name with the extension ".TL".
  389. Default File                A file CATALOG ON A DISK uses for
  390.                             anything except catalog information, such as
  391.                             the opening screen, the main menu header,
  392.                             and so on.  Most of these files have the
  393.                             extension .CM.

  411. Field                       A database term meaning a type of
  412.                             information (such as a name, address, etc.).
  413. Menu                        A box in CATALOG ON A DISK containing
  414.                             several items that are chosen by placing the
  415.                             menu bar over the item you want.

  417. 1.3 TECHNICAL SUPPORT
  418.  
  419. CATALOG ON A DISK was written by Dan Veaner.  Dan can be
  420. reached at EmmaSoft, or CompuServe at 71460,2644.
  421.  
  422. Technical assistance is available ONLY to registered users.  You must
  423. have a valid serial number to receive assistance.  Before calling check
  424. the manual to make sure you are using CATALOG ON A DISK
  425. properly.  If so, try using a different copy of the program and see if
  426. the problem continues.
  427.  
  428. EmmaSoft is opened M-F 9-Noon and 1-5, and sometimes on
  429. Saturdays.  When you call for assistance have the following
  430. information ready (if you get the answering machine please leave your
  431. name, serial number, a number where you may be called collect, and
  432. some good times to reach you): 
  433.  
  434.          ■         Your valid serial number.  (You will find this on the
  435.                    disk label of your registered copy.)
  436.  
  437.          ■         Type and make of computer, printer, etc.
  438.  
  439.          ■         A concise explanation of the problem (what you tried
  440.                    to do, what actually happened.  How many times you
  441.                    tried it.  Etc.)

  445. features in CATALOG ON A DISK.  Many of our customers'
  446. suggestions have been incorporated into our programs, so please feel

  473. 2.1 HOW TO READ A CATALOG
  474.  
  475. Start the program by typing CATALOG (Enter).
  476.  
  477. The Opening Screen Comes on.  This will be one or more screens full
  478. of company information, instructions, or other information.  To go to
  479. the next screen press any key until you get to the main menu screen.
  480.  
  481. At any menu you may use the following keys:

  489. 2.2 VIEWING CATALOG INFORMATION AND ORDERING

  491. The Main Menu Screen may have information on the left or the
  492. screen and a menu at the right.  The menu shows up to twenty
  493. categories of items you may look up and order.
  494.  
  495. To choose a category place the menu bar over it, using the arrow
  496. keys to move the bar and press (Enter).  
  497.  
  498. Now you will see a screen full of catalog items.  If there are more
  499. items than you can see on one screen use the (PgUp) (PgDn) (Home) (End)
  500. keys to see more items.  When you see an item of interest place the
  501. menu bar over it and press enter.  (To return to the main menu press
  502. (Esc) .)
  503.  
  504. You may search for an item by pressing (alt) (s) .  This is a case sensative search.  If you are looking
  505. for an item called "widget" type "widget" when prompted to.  Type (Enter) to search forward from the
  506. current item, or (b) to search forward from the beginning of the file.  Keep in mind that you may
  507. have to search for "WIDGET" or "Widget".

  530. Now you will see a four line product description (if it is present in the
  531. file).  To order this product press (Enter) , or press (Esc) to back out.

  533. Type the number of this product you want to order.  CATALOG-ON-
  534. A-DISK confirms your order and gives you the total for that number
  535. of items.  To accept this order press (Enter) .  To change the quantity
  536. press (r) and re-enter the quantity you want.  To exit without ordering
  537. this item press (Esc) .

  539. You may back into the main menu screen to choose other categories
  540. to order from.  When you are done ordering go to the main menu
  541. screen and press (Enter) .  You may order up to 200 different items in
  542. one session.

  544. 2.3 THE EXIT MENU
  545.  
  546. Now you see the Exit Menu.  From Here you may print an order
  547. form, view your order, go back to the main menu screen to order
  548. more items, enter your name and address, or leave the program.
  549.  
  550. Printing an Order Form:
  551.  
  552. You can print the order form to your printer (to mail or fax) or to a
  553. file on your disk (to send by modem if the company accepts orders
  554. this way).  If printing on your printer MAKE SURE YOUR
  555. PRINTER IS ON LINE AND READY.
  556.  
  557. When printing to a file you will be prompted for a file name.
  558.  
  559. Reviewing Your Order:
  560.  
  561. Here you can see what you have ordered with the subtotal for the
  562. whole order (tax, shipping, etc. is not included here).  If there are
  563. more items than can be seen on one screen you may view the rest by
  564. using (PgUp) (PgDn) (Home) (End) .
  565.  
  566. To delete an item press (Del) and type the number of the item you
  567. want to delete.  The subtotal will be adjusted.

  600. even if you only order a few times.

  651. For each category of items you want in your catalog you need to
  652. create a Catalog file.  You also need to create an Opening Screen file
  653. and a Header file, and an Order Information File.
  654.  
  655. 3.1 HOW TO MAKE AN OPENING SCREEN FILE
  656.  
  657. The Opening Screen file is the first information your customer sees
  658. when he or she starts the catalog program.  This can be your
  659. company name, a brief general description of how to order,
  660. something about your products or whatever.  You will want to keep
  661. this fairly short.
  662.  
  663. Using an ASCII text editor you can create the opening screen(s) that
  664. your customers will see.  This information will be shown, a screen at
  665. a time, to your customers when they first start t=e program.  
  666.  
  667. Make sure that no line is wider than 78 characters, and that you press
  668. Enter at the end of the last line to put a newline character there
  669. (otherwise the last line won't show up on the screen).  When the file
  670. is finished you must compress it (see section 4.3, "COMPRESSING
  671. CATALOG FILES" below).  The name of this file MUST be
  672. FIRST.TXT.
  673.  
  674. 3.2 HOW TO MAKE A HEADER FILE
  675.  
  676. The HEADER is the information that appears on the menu screen,
  677. just above the menu choices.
  678.  
  679. Use an ASCII text editor to create a file that is no longer than 9 lines
  680. long.  This can have your company name, a slogan, or whatever you
  681. want.
  682.  
  683. Make sure that no line is wider than 40 characters, and that you press
  684. (Enter) at the end of the last line to put a newline character there
  685. (otherwise the last line won't show up on the screen).  When the file
  686. is finished you must compress it (see section 4.3, "COMPRESSING
  687. CATALOG FILES" below).  The name of this file MUST be
  688. HEADER.TXT.

  947. files.  Since compressed files are smaller than regular ASCII files you
  948. can fit more of them on a floppy disk.  It is easy to compress a file.

  1126. When you want to look at a catalog, CATALOG looks for two types
  1127. of files:  Default Files and Catalog Files.  Both types of file have the
  1128. .CM extension.

  1130. Default files hold information for the opening screen, the catalog
  1131. header, on screen help, this manual, and so on.  Some of these files
  1132. have the .CM extension (CATALOG ON A DISK's extension that
  1133. identifies compressed files).

  1137. CATALOG-ON-A-DISK automatically reads whichever Catalog Files
  1138. are on your disk to create the menu of categories.  Catalog files

  1140. (the compressed product information) and .TL(a short ascii file with
  1141. the category title for the main menu).  For example: WIDGETS.CM

  1243. buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you
  1244. are expected to register.  This allows you to try the program before

  1246. you will receive the latest version on a disk and a printed version of

  1511. Some databases import and export numbers with no quotation marks around them 
  1512. in the ascii delimited field.  For this reason two command line flags have 
  1513. been added to CATALOG-ON-A-DISK to allow you some flexibility in dealing with
  1514. such a situation.

  1516. Use -o when you do not want quotation marks around the Order Number field.
  1517. Use -p when you do not want quotation marks around the Price field.
  1518.  
  1519. Examples:

  1521. You are using a number field for price, but not order number, and you do not
  1522. want quotations around the price.  To export in this format for a catalog 
  1523. file called MYSTUFF.CM type the following at the command line:

  1525.                         catalog -e -p mystuff

  1527. The file will look something like this:

  1537. APENDIX B:  Nationality Setting

  1539. CATALOG-ON-A-DISK now supports two customer address formats:  United States
  1540. and European styles.  You use the -n (Nationality) flag to set the program
  1541. to one or the other.  To do this type:

  1543.                              catalog -n
  1544.  
  1545. The program will respond, "CATALOG-ON-A-DISK set for US Style Address", 
  1546. or "CATALOG-ON-A-DISK set for European Style Address."
