Aside from the fact that QFE (previously known as Qfonedit)
supports Qmodem SST 4.0, a few other things are new. Really!
The unregistered version of QFE now includes the same on-line
help as the registered version. (The help system is "smart
enough" to display the help most likely to be useful in many of
the situations where you might use it. It is also designed to
allow most of the help system to be accessed in any situation.)
And the registered version does not save a configuration file.
Both versions try to read QMODEM.CNF at start-up, to learn your
choice of colors and other important values. Both versions also
accept some "command line switches" to provide information about
screen colors, sound, etc.
The most obvious change in QFE is that it does not use menus. All
commands operate either on the entire .FON, or the .FON entry
where the cursor is, or on a marked block of entries. The few
commands which require additional input open up windows to accept
that input.
QFE also has a "command mode" in which it behaves more like
Qmodem's AltD and an "edit mode" in which it behaves like a
full-screen editor.
QFE will operate on two .FON files at a time, allowing entries to
be copied from file to file. This is primarily in response to the
many requests for a "merge" feature. The display can be switched
to show either .FON at will, and they may be replaced (and saved)
independently.
The Sort command has improved input, and operates on up to 8
fields--with the sort order (ascending or descending) selected
individually for each field.
A new "Duplicate" command allows copying of selected fields from
one entry over a marked block--or clearing of selected fields in
that block.
"Undo" is not limited to just the most recent changes. QFE
retains the information necessary to undo as many changes as
possible, subject to available RAM.
The Find command searches all fields. Successful matches switch
the display as required (like the Qmodem Other command does) to
show the field where the match was made.
QFE saves only one older copy of the .FON file, rather than two.
The unregistered version of QFE will usually prompt for some
keypresses before leaving the start-up screen. And it will
usually offer to print an order form at the end of the session.
(Previously registered users who have not received a postcard
explaining these changes should write or call Sunflower Systems
for information.)
QFE is $15 per copy, shipped prepaid on diskette in the US or to
Canada. Orders from other countries require an additional $5 for
shipping. Purchase orders (written) are accepted only from
government agencies and schools. (There is a $5 surcharge for
invoiced orders.) Payment must be in US dollars. Except for
bankcard orders (see next paragraph) or American Express money
orders, payment must be in cash or with instruments drawn on US
institutions. (Payment in US funds with instruments drawn on
foreign institutions will not be accepted.)
QFE may be ordered, with bankcard payment, from a tollfree line.
