WORKQUEUE
Work Scheduling System
INSTALLATION AND START-UP PROCEDURES
WorkQueue helps you schedule a "queue" of work where skilled
people are the principle resource needed to get that work done.
You begin by establishing a Staff Plan. In it you identify the
people available to do the work as well as the skills and
availability of each person. Any skill can be defined and
assigned to any person. The skills can also be "weighted"
according to the experience of each person. In addition to
skills, the availability of each person can be modified to allow
for vacations, overtime, part time, etc.
The next step is to establish a work plan. You begin by
describing the overall products or goals of the work at hand
(each is called a "job"). Next, the individual work steps (called
tasks) needed to complete each job are defined. Each of these
tasks is assigned to either a person or a skill. The number of
workdays needed to complete each task is also recorded.
Holidays can also be excluded from the schedule (but they can be
overridden).
Once the Staff Plan, Work Plan and Holiday schedule are
completed, the work can be scheduled. The scheduler assigns work
to the people in the staff plan based on their skills and
availability and then calculates the elapsed time needed to
complete each task based on their availability. You can further
refine the schedule by assigning priorities and declaring
dependencies between related tasks.
GETTING STARTED
Backing up the System Disks
There are two system disks - use your PC to create a copy of
each. The originals should be stored in a safe place and the
copies should be used for day-to-day operation.
Running the System
The installation procedure depends on whether you are going
to use the system on a hard disk or a floppy disk.

TWO FLOPPY DISK DRIVES
Put System Disk One in drive "A" and a formatted disk in
drive "B" to store the data file on. Make sure drive "A" is
the default drive and start WorkQueue with the following
command:
A:>WQ
When the Opening Screen is displayed remove System Disk One
and insert System Disk Two in drive "A". You won't need
System Disk One again so you can leave System Disk Two in
drive "A" until the next time you start WorkQueue.
Project Control files are stored on System Disk Two so don't
place a write protect tab on it.
HARD DISK DRIVE
Create a directory called "WQ" (or any other name you
choose) on your hard disk and copy the files on both system
disks to it.
Add two statements to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
Add the WorkQueue directory (e.g., WQ) to the PATH
statement
Add the following statement: SET WQ=C:\WQ
Restart the PC so these changes will take effect. You can
then start WorkQueue from any directory or drive by keying
in:
WQ
The Opening Screen
The first screen presented will be the Opening Screen. It
will display the copyright reminder and ask for the name of
the Project File to be used. If key in a project name that
doesn't yet exist, it will be created for you.
Menus
After you have keyed in the Project File name and pressed
the enter key, you'll see is the Main Menu at the top of the
screen. Most system functions are executed from this and
other menus "beneath" it. You can make a menu choice either
by pressing the capitalized letter or by using the cursor
arrows to move the highlighted letter to your choice and
pressing Enter.

ON-LINE HELP
The operating instructions for any screen can be displayed by
pressing F1. The Instruction Manual can be displayed by pressing
F2. You can page forward or backward through the help screens via
the PgUp and PgDn keys. Pressing Esc will exit help.
While you are in Help you can also access two other Help
services:
GLOSSARY, accessed by pressing F3, is context sensitive and
contains the definition for those data elements on the
screen you were in at the time you pressed F1.
INDEX, accessed by pressing F4, displays an index to the
Instruction Manual from which you can choose any subject to
read.
THERE IS NO PRINTED INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR WORKQUEUE, IT IS
CONTAINED ENTIRELY IN THE ON-LINE HELP.
LICENSING TERMS
The license terms are explained in the on-line help in WorkQueue.
You can display them, along with prices and ordering information,
by pressing F1, then F4 and choosing "License Terms" from the
index.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
WorkQueue requires a PC with 512K of Random Access Memory (RAM)
and DOS 2.0 or greater. If you find that WorkQueue won't run on
your PC, simply return it for a refund under the terms of the
warranty.
