  3.                 A Quick Start Example for Vacation Planner
  4.  
  5. In this example we will ask VP (Vacation Planner) to calculate and print
  6. the shortest route from Reno, Nevada to Tijuana, Mexico, using the
  7. California Map, CA-2.
  8.  
  9. 1.  Using Drive A as the active drive, type "VP".
  10.  
  11. 2.  From the Vacation Planner Main Menu press "Enter" to select "(T)rip
  12. Planner".
  13.  
  14. 3.  From the Trip Planner Main Menu press "Enter" to select "(A)utomatic
  15. Trip Planner".
  16.  
  17. 4.  A list of the available maps will appear at the top of the screen.
  18. To use the California map, type "CA-2".
  19.  
  20. 5.  The program will now load 194 California cities into memory.
  21.  
  22. 6.  Type "Y" to the question "Do you want the direct (shortest) trip (Y/N)?
  23. NOTE: We will try a route other than the shortest in the next example.
  24.  
  25. 7.  The first of a series of screens will now appear listing the available
  26. cities in alphabetical order.  You may use PgUp and PgDn to move from
  27. screen to screen and use the up/down arrows to highlight desired cities.
  28. You may also press the "Alt" key while typing the first letter of the
  29. desired city to move to the appropriate screen.  We will use the latter
  30. method.

  32.     a.  While pressing the "Alt" key type "R" to move to the screen with
  33. "Reno, NV" listed.
  34.  
  35.     b.  Using the down arrow move the cursor down to "Reno".  Type "S" to
  36. select Reno as the (S)tarting town.  
  37.  
  38.     c.  Again while pressing the "Alt" key type "T" to move to the screen
  39. with "Tijuana, MX" listed.  Move the cursor to "Tijuana" and type "D" to
  40. select Tijuana as the (D)estination town.

  42.     d.  Next type "F" to indicate you are finished selecting your starting
  43. and destination cities.

  45. 8.  Yow will now be asked to confirm your route.  Press "Y" if the "To" and
  46. "From" cities are correct.  The program will then examine all possible
  47. routes and calculate the shortest.  You will be returned to the Trip
  48. Planner Main Menu.

  50. 9.  Type "3" to indicate you wish to print the calculated route.
  51.  
  52. 10.  From the Printer Selection Menu type "2" to obtain a printout of the
  53. route.
  54.  
  55. 11.  In most cases no special "escape codes" are required to activate
  56. printers so again type "2" to indicate your printer is ready.

  61. 12.  Your printer will then print the shortest route.  The printout will
  62. contain the following:
  63.  
  64.      a.  Cities enroute to Tijuana.
  65.      b.  The highway to use from one city to the next.
  66.      c.  The distance from one city to the next.
  67.      d.  The estimated average speed (which may be changed).
  68.      e.  The time required to travel from one city to the next at the
  69.          estimated speed.
  70.      f.  The total elapsed time and distance traveled as you proceed       
  71.          toward your destination.                                          
  72.      g.  The remaining time and distance to go as you proceed to your      
  73.          destination.

  75. You may also select routes other than the shortest.  Suppose you want to
  76. spend a day or two in Yosemite National Park before proceeding to Tijuana. 
  77. Yosemite will be designated as an "Intermediate" point on your route from
  78. Reno to Tijuana.

  80. 1.  Proceed as in steps 1 through 6 above, except in step 6, answer "N" to
  81. obtain a route other than the shortest.  
  82.  
  83. 2.  You will then be asked "How many Detours (Intermediate towns,
  84. diversions, etc.) (0-5)".  This indicates you many enter up to 5
  85. intermediate points.  In this example, Yosemite National Park is our only
  86. intermediate point so enter "1".

  88. 3.  Select your starting and destinations "S" & "D" as in step 7 of our
  89. first example.  Then type use "Alt Y" to go to the listing containing
  90. "Yosemite, CA".  Use the down arrow to highlight "Yosemite" and then type
  91. the number "1" to indicate the one intermediate town on your route.

  93.      Note:  Starting, intermediate and destination cities need not be 
  94.      entered in that order.  They may be entered in any order as long 
  95.      as "S" is used to indicate your starting city, "D" is used for 
  96.      your destination and a number 0-5 is used for intermediate cities.

  98. 4.  Proceed as in steps 8 thru 12 in the first example to print your route.
  99.     Note:  On the printout, cities other than the starting city and    
  100.     intermediate cities are indented one space to the left of other cities
  101.     on the route.  This is to aid in the identification of these cities.
