  13.    TASK-PRO is user-supported shareware, and depends on user registration
  14.    for its continued existance.  This product is liscensed for personal use
  15.    only and not for use in a professional or business environment.  To
  16.    register TASK-PRO for use in a business or professional environment
  17.    simply follow the directions supplied through the INFO option of the
  18.    TASK-PRO main menu option.

  21.    PRO, along with a user's guide, one free product upgrade and notices of
  22.    all future product upgrades.

  25.                                INTRODUCTION
  26.                                ------------
  27.    TASK-PRO is a program for the IBM-PC and compatibles which allows
  28.    a manager to maintain a well organized database of tasks and troubles.
  29.    TASK-PRO allows related tasks to be grouped into files which
  30.    can be manipulated independently.  This provides the end user with the
  31.    flexibility of grouping tasks associated with specific projects or
  32.    individuals together.  Tasks can be added, modified, deleted, sorted,
  33.    prioritized and/or reported on with ease.  TASK-PRO produces a visual
  34.    signal to indicate tasks which have exceeded their deadline without
  35.    resolution.  The user is provided with a means of maintaining an edit
  36.    file for each task which is also available at a keystroke.

  38.    In short, TASK-PRO is designed to maximize the efficiency of any business
  39.    operation which is task- or trouble- driven.  If your business fits this
  40.    description, then you should find TASK-PRO an indispensable tool.

  42.    This file is organized chronologically in the order that a beginner
  43.    should read to install and beginning running TASK-PRO.  TASK-PRO
  44.    is simple and consistent to operate with extensive context-sensitive
  45.    help (described later).

  48.                            INSTALLING TASK-PRO
  49.                            -------------------
  50.    TASK-PRO consists of four files.  These files are as follows:
  51.  
  52.         o TASK.EXE   - the TASK-PRO program.
  53.         o TSK.CTL    - a control file required by TASK-PRO to assure
  54.                        that all task id's are unique.
  55.         o SAMPLE.TSK - a sample task database file to assist the new
  56.                        user in training.
  57.         o TSK.HLP    - an encrypted text file containing help information
  58.                        used by TASK-PRO.

  60.    Installing TASK-PRO on your system is a simple two-step process.  The
  61.    first step is to create a directory in which TASK-PRO is to reside.  The
  62.    second step is to copy the TASK-PRO files into this directory.  After
  63.    this process is complete TASK-PRO is installed on your system.

  66.                             RUNNING TASK-PRO
  67.                             ----------------
  68.    To execute TASK-PRO the user should be in the TASK-PRO directory and
  69.    enter 'TASK' from the DOS prompt.

  71.    On executing TASK-PRO the user will first be presented with the main
  72.    menu, which appears on a bar across the top of the display.  Within
  73.    this menu the left and right arrow keys of the numeric keypad allow
  74.    the user to highlight the various menu options.  If a pull-down menu
  75.    of sub-options is defined for a main menu option then it too will be
  76.    displayed immediately below the associated main menu option.  In the
  77.    case of such a pull-down submenu these options may be alternately
  78.    highlighted with the up and down arrow keys of the numeric keypad.

  80.    Depressing the ENTER key will cause the currently highlighted menu
  81.    option to be executed.  The TASK-PRO menu options are described in
  82.    following sections.

  85.                              GETTING ON-LINE HELP
  86.                              --------------------
  87.    TASK-PRO features extensive context-sensitive help.  'Context sensitive'
  88.    means that when you ask for help you get information specific to the
  89.    operation you are about to perform.  For example, if you have highlighted
  90.    the 'DEFAULTS' option of the main menu and ask for help you'll get a help
  91.    window describing what DEFAULTS does and how it is used.  You may ask for
  92.    help by hitting the F1 key at any time.  Help screens may be up to 9 pages
  93.    in length, and may contain embedded keywords which allow the user to jump
  94.    to other related help topics.  To jump to another help topic the user
  95.    simply uses the left and right arrow keys to move between the selectable
  96.    keywords and, when the desired keyword is highlighted, selects it by
  97.    depressing the ENTER key.  The PgUp and PgDn keys allow the user to page
  98.    up and down between help screens.  The user can exit help at any time by
  99.    depressing the ESC key.

  101.    All help screens have 'INDEX' as a selectable keyword on the upper right
  102.    corner of the first screen.  By selecting this keyword within help the
  103.    user can bring up an index of general help topics and select from among
  104.    them.

  107.                                MAIN MENU OPTIONS
  108.                                -----------------
  109.    The TASK-PRO main menu provides the user with the options FILES, EDIT,
  110.    DEFAULTS, REPORTS, and INFO.

  112.    The FILES option allows the user to open new and/or existing task files,
  113.    to pick a task file from a set of existing task files, or to quit the
  114.    program.

  116.    The EDIT option brings up the TASK-PRO task edit window, as described in
  117.    the following section.

  119.    The DEFAULTS option brings up a data entry window which allows the user
  120.    to pre-fill default information to be automatically inserted into tasks
  121.    whenever a new task is being added.

  123.    The REPORTS options allows the user to produce a printed list of tasks
  124.    in either a BRIEF, an ABBREVIATED or a FULL format.

  126.    The INFO option produces a pop-up window of information about TASK-PRO.

  129.                                 THE EDIT WINDOW
  130.                                 ---------------
  131.    Selecting the 'EDIT' option from the TASK-PRO main menu causes the
  132.    edit window to appear in the lower portion of the display, with one
  133.    line appearing for each displayed task.  The currently selected task
  134.    appears highlighted.  This window provides the user with a scrolling
  135.    sorted list of tasks defined within the currently opened task file
  136.    and allows the user to view, modify, or delete information associated
  137.    with each task.

  139.    The following command keystrokes are valid within the edit window:

  141.           'R'        - Re-Sort tasks
  142.           'T'        - Tag/Untag tasks
  143.           'S'        - Switch Display Format
  144.           '+'        - Add a New Task
  145.           '-'        - Delete the Highlighted Task
  146.           Up Arrow   - Highlight Next Task Line
  147.           Down Arrow - Highlight Prev Task Line
  148.           PgUp       - Scroll Up One Page
  149.           PgDn       - Scroll Down One Page
  150.           Home       - Go to First Task In List
  151.           End        - Go to End of List
  152.           F10        - Edit Memo File for Highlighted Task

  154.           ESC        - Return to Task-Pro Main Menu

  157.                                   DATA ENTRY
  158.                                   ----------
  159.    Entering data into the data entry windows of TASK-PRO is quite intuitive.
  160.    The normal alphanumeric keys of the keyboard result in the corresponding
  161.    characters appearing at the cursor position and the cursor being advanced.
  162.    The INS key toggles the cursor between insert mode and overstrike mode.
  163.    The DEL key deletes the character under the cursor.  The Backspace key
  164.    backs the cursor up a single character.  The Home and End keys of the
  165.    numeric keypad move the input cursor to the beginning and end of the
  166.    data entry line respectively.  The ENTER key causes the data entry window
  167.    to disappear and all changes to be made.  The ESC key cancels the data
  168.    entry for the window.  Additionally, the up and down arrow keys move the
  169.    cursor up and down between fields, and the left and right arrow keys move
  170.    the cursor left and right respectively within the data entry field without
  171.    affecting the content of the field.  The TAB key, like the down arrow
  172.    key, advances the input cursor to the next field in the data entry window.

  174.    Editing of memo files within TASK-PRO is quite similar to the editing
  175.    of individual data fields.  The primary difference is that the up and down
  176.    arrows of the numeric keypad now move the input cursor between lines, and
  177.    the ESC key terminates the edit session with any changes being saved.

  180.                     BECOMING A REGISTERED TASK-PRO USER
  181.                     -----------------------------------
  182.    To become a registered TASK-PRO user please follow the directions that
  183.    appear when the INFO option of the TASK-PRO main menu is selected.
