Resume Shop
System Requirements:
IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or compatibles
MS-DOS 2.0 or greater
256K RAM or greater
* No known conflicts with other memory resident programs.
If you have any problems with Resume Shop running with other
software, please let us know through the "User Response
Form."
Installation:
Floppy Based Resume Shop Systems: The program and data files
necessary to run Resume Shop are small and should fit on one diskette.
Please make a backup copy of the Resume Shop disk. This way if you have
a problem you will, you will have a back up available.
Hard Disk Resume Shop Systems: Create a sub directory off
the root called "RESUME" with the make directory (MD) DOS command.
C:> MD RESUME <enter>
Then change the current directory(CD) to "RESUME" and use the copy
command from the a: to c: drive.
C:> CD RESUME <enter>
C:> COPY A:*.* C: <enter>
Hard disk users may want to create a batch file to take them
automatically to the "RESUME" sub directory and execute the
"RESUME.EXE" program file.
Color/Monochrome Systems:
This version of Resume Shop has two screen possiblities. If you have a mono-
chrome monitor type :
C > RESUME M
The M causing the color selection to default to monochrome. Typing RESUME
by itself starts the program and defaults to a color screen of red, gray,
black and blue.
C:> RESUME

Resume Shop
The Design:
Resume Shop is written to be used much like a menu you would
see in a restaurant when ordering dinner. Instead of telling
the waitress your order, you type the letter selection into
Resume Shop and executes your request. For example, if you
want to add or change information regarding your educational
background, you type b and hit enter to start processing the
changes you wish to make.
gSOFT built Resume Shop with the novice user in mind. It
is our goal to have the computer do as much of the work as it
can. We have kept the rules limited and flow is consistent
with how you would write a resume with pen and paper. Resume
Shop is a WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) text editor
so type just as you would want to see the text on your resume.
There is nothing you can do with this product which can hurt your
computer so feel free to experiment with the software. Any
restrictions or warnings are identified below.
The Don'ts:
o Don't delete any files from the program disk which have a
(.exe) suffix or a (resume.) Prefix. These are program
and data files necessary for the Resume Shop Program to
work.
o Don't try to type outside any of the highlighted areas
reserved for input. Resume Shop is set up to read only what
is inside the box.
o Don't break a work between two highlighted areas. The
system does not automatically word wrap or hyphenate.
o When make changes or corrections PLEASE TYPE OUT THE
ENTIRE LINE AND NOT just the changes. Do not space out old values
since Resume Shop will think that you want the spaces included in
your text.
The Do's:
o Make a copy of the program disk before you start the
product. This way if you erase a file by mistake you
still have our original program intact.
3
o Do experiment and let me know if there is anything
additional you would like to see or something you would
like changed.
o If you have any problems or suggestions, please let gSOFT
know and we will be glad to make the changes available to
register users.
About Resumes:
Resumes are the first impression you will be giving a
potential employer. You must be informative and concise
(this is why Resume Shop creates a one page resume).
Identify the points in your background and experience that
are relevant to the position you are applying for. Know a
little about the company and there business and traits
Don't be afraid to have several resumes for
different types of jobs with different employers. You should
target you resume to the type of firm. Be modest don't
oversell your accomplishments or come off as a bragger.
Identify the successes. Make sure your sentences are to the
point and watch grammar and spelling. Have someone else read
your resume and give you feedback on the format and clarity.
A cover letter should also be supplied to provide a personal
statement of interest with an employer. A sample format is
provided on the program disk call cover.let.

Tutorial
Starting out:
First Time Users:
If it is your first time using Resume Shop, it is a good idea
to look over the tutorial. When you have familiarized
yourself with its conventions and general operation start
with option A (personal information) and continue to G (print
resume). Do not be alarmed to see data already keyed into
the entry areas. This was put there to give you an idea of
what should be inputted into the entry. Just type over the
entry or space out what you want deleted. Omit any menu
selections or screens which do not apply. Resume Shop will work
around the omissions and format your final resume accordingly.
For experienced users go ahead and treat this menu driven
program like other menu driven systems. There is
nothing mysterious or technical about using Resume Shop.
To begin Type: C > RESUME or RESUME M
Lesson 1:
Personal Information : Option/Selection A
Key Strokes : a) Hit A or a to display input/change screen.
b) Type over existing data to change or key in
blank areas for new data. Type out
everything space out unwanted left over
characters.
c) Hit return to go to next field.
d) If you make changes Resume Shop will ask you
if you want to keep or start over.
e) If you make no changes Resume Shop will take
you back to main menu screen.
Personal information is the data which identifies your name,
where your live, how you can be reached by phone. Key in all
relevant information. Resume Shop will take care of all the
necessary formatting.
Educational Data: : Option/Selection B
Key Strokes : a) Hit B or b to display input/change screen.
b) Type over existing data to change or key in
blank areas for new data. Type out
everything space out unwanted left over
characters.
c) Hit return to go to next field.
5
d) If you make changes Resume Shop will ask you
if you want to keep or start over.
e) If you make no changes Resume Shop will take
you back to main menu screen.
As you can see the keystrokes are the same for education as they were
for personal information. The keystrokes are the same for
option a through option e (job objective). Key in the
educational experience which is relevant. Just because there
is room for three education entries enter only those which
will help you get your job. For example, don't key in your
junior high school just to have three entries if you are
applying for a job with a large corporation. A entry for
high school and/or college will be plenty. If you are a high
school student a junior high school entry may be appropriate
and helpful.
Work Experience: Option/Selection C
Key Strokes : a) Hit C or c to display input/change screen.
b) Type over existing data to change or key in
blank areas for new data. Type out
everything space out unwanted left over
characters.
c) Hit return to go to next field.
d) If you make changes Resume Shop will ask you
if you want to keep or start over.
e) If you make no changes Resume Shop will take
you back to main menu screen.
Work experience is important when applying for a job. Since
it is based on personal experiences, Resume Shop can not do
much more than guide you through the necessary information.
It would be wise to read over the section "About Resumes"
since the description entries on the work experience is where
this will be the most help.
Note: High School Students- Be sure to list three work
experience entries even if it was for free or just mowing the
neighbors lawn. For you showing you are a reliable worker is
the best information you can supply your prospective
employer.
References: Option/Selection D
Key Strokes : a) Hit D or d to display input/change screen.
b) Type over existing data to change or key in
blank areas for new data. Type out
everything space out unwanted left over
characters.
6
c) Hit return to go to next field.
d) If you make changes Resume Shop will ask you
if you want to keep or start over.
e) If you make no changes Resume Shop will take
you back to main menu screen.
References are important in some jobs especially where you
have little related job experience to the job you are
applying for. They can be left out and provided upon the
request of the employer. If this is the case key "Upon
Request" in the 1st reference name entry.
Job Objective: Option/Selection E
Key Strokes : a) Hit E or e to display input/change screen.
b) Type over existing data to change or key in
blank areas for new data. Type out
everything space out unwanted left over
characters.
c) Hit return to go to next field.
d) If you make changes Resume Shop will ask you
if you want to keep or start over.
e) If you make no changes Resume Shop will take
you back to main menu screen.
Job Objective is much like the reference selection. It is
optional but it is important if you use the job objective
that you make you objective concise and well written since it
is the first part of your resume that the reader will see.
Be careful to check the spelling in the job objective. It is
a good idea to create a job objective which closely matches
the job you are applying for. It is not uncommon to have
several job objectives for each job applied for and sometimes
different resumes also (this option will be available to
registered users).
Display Resume: Option/Selection F
Key Strokes : a) Hit F or f to display resume sections.
b) Hit enter to continue to next section.
c) Continue to hit enter to return to main
menu.
This selection display to the screen the current copy of your
resume. Since the screen is not long enough the display is
in sections.
7
Print Resume: Option/Selection G
Key Strokes : a) Hit G or g to print resume.
b) Make sure the printer is on-line with ready light.
c) Select the letter (E,W,Q) of the resume type you want to
print. E is the default value.
d) Hit any key when printing complete to goto main menu.
A window will appear asking you to select a type of resume. Students
should select the education type resume because they have not acquired
any significant work experience. A person who has a track record of work
experience should use the option W (Work type resume). Once you make your
selection , Resume Shop will print your resume to the attached printer.
MAKE SURE your printer is on-line. If there are options to select
for letter quality or near letter quality use those for a better
looking resume. As far as we know this product will work on all
printers but if not please let us know through the "User Response Form".
Create ASCII File: Options/Selection H
Key Strokes : a) Hit H or h to create ASCII File.
b) Select the letter (E,W,Q) of the resume type you want to
copy to disk. E is the default value.
c) Hit enter to continue to Main menu.
An ASCII file is the universal file format for transferring
files to other application packages. It may be a good idea,
if you have access to a word processor to transfer your ASCII
Resume Shop file for spell checking. Resume Shop does not
support any file importing unless it is a Resume Shop file
section (see appendix for file descriptions). The ASCII file
created will be called ASC.DAT and will write to the current
directory.
Cut/Paste Menu: Option/Selection I
Key Strokes : a) Hit I or i to display window.
b) Hit enter to continue to main menu.
This option will allow the user to mix and match various
sections of the resume for the best fit for the job. This
option is available to registered users (see appendix for
description of new options available for registered users).
8
DOS Shell: Option/Selection S
Key Strokes : a) Hit S or s to go to DOS
b) Key "exit" and hit enter to go back to
Resume Shop main menu.
This option allows you to go to DOS to do some housekeeping
or queries and return to Resume Shop without interruption of
your resume session. This is clearly a option for the
advanced programmer who has a good understanding of DOS and
working in a DOS subset.
Exit Program: Option/Selection Q
Key Strokes : a) Hit Q or q to end Resume Shop.
b) Hit "y" or "Y" to confirm hit "n" or "N"
to return to main menu.
Just as it says this option takes you out of Resume Shop and
back to DOS. Do not worrying about saving any files. Resume
Shop does this automatically for you.

APPENDIX G
gSOFT was conceived as an experiment in the development of MS-DOS based
software distributed in a SHAREWARE environment. The goal of gSOFT is to take
simple applications for personal and business use and automate their
administration such as to make them easier or more efficient than manual
systems. It is the belief of gSOFT that many good applications have yet to be
defined and made available to the general public.
As a software user, I can relate to the difficulty for the average PC user to
pay the expensive prices charged by commercial software developers. The
SHAREWARE concept of free distribution with registration fee's holds the best
potential for providing quality products at affordable prices. Please support
this concept to make this experiment and the SHAREWARE concept a success.
