  14. This document contains the "Getting Started" sections from
  15.     the actual PC-OUTLINE manual.  It is designed, in
  16. combination with the PC-OUTLINE user interface, to get you
  17. up and running and doing useful things with PC-OUTLINE in
  18.    a very short time.  It does not, however, contain a
  19.  detailed description of all the PC-OUTLINE commands nor
  20.      pretend to be a comprehensive tutorial or user's
  21.    reference.  Registered users can receive the actual
  22.      PC-OUTLINE manual which does contain a complete
  23.  description of all commands.  Details on registering are
  24.       in the last section titled registration form.

  147. PC-OUTLINE is distributed through a unique marketing
  148. approach called shareware.  The diskette with programs on
  149. it can be freely copied and shared.  It is also available
  150. from us, SoftWorks Development, for $49.95 plus $5
  151. shipping and handling.  We ask you to help us distribute
  152. PC-OUTLINE by sharing unmodified copies of the diskette
  153. with others.  We also encourage you and those to whom you
  154. have distributed the program to register your copy.
  155. Registration has a number of benefits to you:

  157. 1)   A typeset copy of the manual, including all recent
  158.      updates and additions.
  159.  
  160. 2)   The most recent version of the program.

  162. 3)   Automatic notice of updates.

  174.              WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH PC-OUTLINE
  175.              -------------------------------
  176.  
  177. PC-OUTLINE is an outlining and planning program.  It
  178. allows you to randomly enter information of almost any
  179. type (thoughts, plans, ideas, etc.) and then organize it
  180. into a hierarchial structure.  Once in the hierarchial
  181. structure, you can view the information in many powerful
  182. ways.  For example, using the hide/unhide feature, you
  183. can view just down to any level of detail in the outline
  184. that you want.  With a single keystroke, you can go from
  185. viewing the lowest level of detail to a view that shows
  186. you only the highest, most important topics.
  187.  
  188. With another few keystrokes, you can print the outline,
  189. send it to a file compatible with your word processor,
  190. copy it into another outline, or paste it directly into
  191. your word processor.
  192.  
  193. PC-OUTLINE is particularly appropriate for list making.
  194. Tasks like making todo lists or planning a project are
  195. ideally suited for PC-OUTLINE.
  196.  
  197. For an example of how the hierarchical structure works
  198. and how you can hide and unhide parts of the outline,
  199. start PC-OUTLINE and load the outline titled TUTOR1.  The
  200. text in the outline will help show you what PC-OUTLINE
  201. can do.

  259.                      GETTING STARTED
  260.                      ---------------

  262.                      MAKING A BACKUP
  263.                      ---------------
  264.  
  265. Before using PC-OUTLINE, make a backup copy of the program
  266. and all of its documentation files.  Put this backup away
  267. in a safe place for emergency use only if something were
  268. to happen to your original.
  269.  
  270.                      FOR FLOPPY USE
  271.                      --------------
  272.  
  273. Insert the PC-OUTLINE disk into the default drive and type
  274. PCO to the dos prompt.
  275.  
  276.  
  277.                     FOR HARD DISK USE
  278.                     -----------------
  279.  
  280. Create a directory where you would like to keep all of
  281. your outline files.  Copy the file PCO.EXE from the floppy
  282. program disk to this directory.  Set the current logged
  283. directory to your outline directory and type PCO to the
  284. dos prompt.
  285.  
  286. To be able to use PC-OUTLINE from any directory on your
  287. hard disk see the appendix on USING PC-OUTLINE ON A HARD
  288. DISK.
  289.  
  290.           FOR USE AS A MEMORY RESIDENT PROGRAM
  291.           ------------------------------------
  292.  
  293. To use PC-OUTLINE as a memory resident program (where it
  294. is always instantly available at the touch of a key),
  295. start the program with PCO/r instead of just PCO.  This
  296. tells PC-OUTLINE that you want to load the memory resident
  297. version instead.  You will get a brief copyright message
  298. and PC-OUTLINE will be permanently resident in memory.  To
  299. start PC-OUTLINE just press ^\ (control backslash).  The
  300. invoke key can be changed to anything you like using the
  301. separate program KEYSET.COM.
  302.  
  303. You may want to place the command PCO/r in your
  304. autoexec.bat file so that PC-OUTLINE is automatically
  305. loaded each time you boot your computer.  See the
  306. following section on other command parameter startup
  307. options to adjust the amount of memory that PC-OUTLINE
  308. will use.  The default is about 128k but can be adjusted
  309. as low as 90k.
  310.  
  311. If you are using PC-OUTLINE in the memory resident mode,
  312. you should regularly save your work.  If one of the other
  313. programs that you are running should hang or cause your
  314. computer to crash, you will lose any un-saved outlines.
  315. It is a good practice to save your outlines before
  316. returning to your main application (the single keystroke
  317. ^S will accomplish this).
  318.  
  319. PC-OUTLINE is designed to be compatible with as many other
  320. memory-resident programs as possible.  Because all memory
  321. resident programs have their own way of being memory
  322. resident, some conflicts are bound to exist.  When you
  323. have problems, experiment with the order the programs are
  324. loaded.   Although we cannot tell you how PC-OUTLINE will
  325. interact with all other memory-resident programs, we do
  326. know that PC-OUTLINE itself will be the most reliable when
  327. it is loaded last.  If another program also says that it
  328. wants to be loaded last, then you may need to experiment
  329. with the correct loading order for the two programs to
  330. work with one another.  In general, you should load
  331. PC-OUTLINE after keyboard enhancers like Prokey.  If you
  332. load PC-OUTLINE after SideKick, both programs will
  333. function fine except that you will not be able to invoke
  334. PC-OUTLINE from within SideKick.
  335.  
  336.                     THE FIRST SCREEN
  337.                     ----------------
  338.  
  339. Once the program starts, the first screen is a message
  340. explaining the shareware distribution concept, how it
  341. works, how you can most benefit from it, and how you can
  342. help support it.  To continue past this screen, press any
  343. key.
  344.  
  345. In the future, you may start the program by typing PCO /q
  346. to the dos prompt instead of just PCO and you will bypass
  347. the opening screen.  It may be helpful to create a batch
  348. file that types the PCO /q for you each time.  We do ask,
  349. however, that if you copy the program for someone, please
  350. do not supply them with the batch file that bypasses the
  351. shareware screen.  It is to both our and your advantage to
  352. help as many users as possible both learn about and
  353. support the shareware concept.
  354.  
  355.                     THE OPENING MENU
  356.                     ----------------
  357.  
  358. The opening menu offers you four choices.  To choose one
  359. of the four options, either use the up and down arrow keys
  360. to select the option you want and press RET or just press
  361. the first letter of the desired option (i.e. press "o" to
  362. choose Open a New Outline).  Pressing the ESC key will
  363. always abort the current operation.
  364.  
  365.                     OPEN A NEW OUTLINE
  366.                     ------------------
  367.  
  368. Enter any legal dos path or path and filename except do
  369. not use an extension on the eight character name.
  370. PC-OUTLINE will automatically add the extension .PCO.  If
  371. you do not type a filename, then the file will be created
  372. in the directory listed on the bottom line of the screen
  373. (known as the current directory).  If you type the name of
  374. an outline that already exists, then it will be loaded
  375. rather than creating a new one with the same name.
  376.  
  377.                  LOAD AN EXISTING OUTLINE
  378.                  ------------------------
  379.  
  380. Choose one of the existing outlines to load by pointing to
  381. it with the arrows and pressing RET.  If no outlines exist
  382. in the current directory, then PC-OUTLINE will assume that
  383. you must want to create a new outline and will prompt you
  384. accordingly.  If you realize that you are logged into the
  385. wrong directory or you change your mind for some other
  386. reason, you can always press ESC to back up a step.
  387.  
  388.                  CHANGE DRIVE/DIRECTORY
  389.                  ----------------------
  390.  
  391. Enter the new current directory.  This command obeys most
  392. of the same rules as dos.  If you enter a full path name,
  393. then that becomes your new current directory.  If you
  394. enter just a sub-directory name, then that is appended
  395. onto the existing directory path.  To just change logged
  396. drives, just type "d:" where d is the desired drive.
  397.  
  398.                           QUIT
  399.                           ----
  400.  
  401. Choose this option to exit PC-OUTLINE and return to dos.
  402.  
  403.  
  404.          OTHER COMMAND PARAMETER STARTUP OPTIONS
  405.          ---------------------------------------
  406.  
  407. A command parameter option is a sequence of special
  408. characters typed after the program name when starting a
  409. program from dos.  In the sections above we already
  410. introduced the command parameters "/r" and "/q".  There
  411. are a number of other command parameters:
  412.  
  413. /b - forces the display to black and white
  414. /s - makes screen activity faster on most non-IBM screens
  415. /m = xxx specifies how much memory to reserve for outline
  416.      data in the memory resident version.  For example
  417.      /m=22 would reserve 22k for outline data.  Since the
  418.      program itself will occupy about 60k, this would be a
  419.      grand total of 82k.  The default is /m=64.
  420. /d - causes PC-OUTLINE to ignore the starting directory
  421.      that you may have entered in the ADVANCED
  422.      CONFIGURATION menu and instead use the current
  423.      directory when PC-OUTLINE was started.  This is
  424.      useful if you keep most of your outlines in one
  425.      directory (so you set the starting directory), but
  426.      sometimes you want to start out with the current
  427.      directory.
  428.  
  429.  
  430.                     THE WORKING SCREEN
  431.                    ------------------
  432.  
  433. There are a number of parts to the normal working screen.
  434.  
  435. The bottom line usually contains a message indicating some
  436. of your current options.  The end of the bottom row tells
  437. you how much free memory you have.
  438.  
  439. The 2nd line from the bottom show the current ruler with
  440. left and right margins, tab stops and the current cursor
  441. position.
  442.  
  443. The next to last column is a status column that tells you
  444. information about the current line.
  445.  
  446. A blank means this line ends in wordwrap.
  447. A period means this line is past the end of the outline.
  448. A dash means this line is the last line in an outline
  449. entry and there are no sub-entries.
  450. A down arrow means this line is the last line in an
  451. outline entry and there are sub-entries.
  452. A chevron means that this line ends in a hard carriage
  453. return.
  454. Reverse video means that this outline entry has either its
  455. children or its text hidden.
  456.  
  457. The second column is a page break indication column.  The
  458. last line of each page will show a square block.
  459.  
  460. The second row is a status line that lists the following:
  461.  
  462.   -  The current path/filename (only the last 20
  463.           characters are show here).  The full filename
  464.           can always be seen with the WINDOW LIST command.
  465.   -  The amount of memory the outline occupies so far in
  466.           K-bytes.
  467.   -  The status of Insert/Overwrite for editing.
  468.   -  Page, line, and column information.
  469.   -  The current system time.
  470.   -  The window number.
  471.  
  472. The top line shows the top level menu options.
  473.  
  474.  
  475.                   HOW TO USE THE MENUS
  476.                   --------------------
  477.  
  478. The menu system is designed to be both easy to learn for
  479. the novice and quick to use for the experienced user.
  480. Because of this, there are several ways to invoke and use
  481. the menus - each method varies in speed and ease of use.
  482.  
  483. THE EASY WAY
  484.  
  485. The easiest way to use the menus is to press the INS key.
  486. This will start up the FILE menu.  To choose one of the
  487. other menus, use the right and left arrow keys to position
  488. the menu along the menu bar.  Within any one of the menus
  489. you may make a selection by either pointing to the desired
  490. option and pressing RET or by pressing the first letter of
  491. the desired option.  Pressing the ESC key will always exit
  492. the current menu.
  493.  
  494. THE QUICK WAY #1
  495.  
  496. To start directly in one of the menus, press the "/" key
  497. (forward slash) and then the first letter of the desired
  498. menu.  Thus, to go immediately to the DISPLAY menu you
  499. would type /d or immediately to the OUTLINE menu would be
  500. /o.  In order to actually use the / key in your text, just
  501. type it twice.  Note that this key can be changed to
  502. whatever you like using the setup program called
  503. KEYSET.COM.
  504.  
  505. THE QUICK WAY #2
  506.  
  507. An alternate way to start directly in one of the menus is
  508. to press Alt and the first letter of the desired menu.
  509. For example Alt-d would start the DISPLAY menu and Alt-o
  510. would start the OUTLINE menu.
  511.  
  512. SHORTCUT KEYSTROKES
  513.  
  514. In addition to choosing items through menus, many of the
  515. more common functions have single key shortcuts.  If a
  516. menu item can also be accomplished with a shortcut
  517. keystroke, then that keystroke will be listed in
  518. parentheses in the menu.  For example, in the OUTLINE
  519. menu, the option CREATE NEW OUTLINE ENTRY can also be done
  520. by just typing a control-N.  In addition to the
  521. pre-defined shortcut keystrokes, you can create your own
  522. by using keyboard macros.  See the section on macros in
  523. the description of the ADVANCED menu for more information.
  524.  
  525.                  HOW TO USE OPTION BOXES
  526.                  -----------------------
  527.  
  528. Some menu selections will lead you to an option box where
  529. you will be presented with a number of different options
  530. to choose from.  For example, selecting PARAGRAPH STYLE
  531. from the display menu, brings up an option box with the
  532. choices left margin, right margin, paragraph alignment,
  533. and first line alignment.  To change one of the options,
  534. use the up and down arrow keys to position the cursor in
  535. the desired option.  The bottom line of the screen should
  536. indicate what to do next depending upon what type of
  537. option it is.
  538.  
  539. When you have correctly specified one of the options, you
  540. can press RET to enter that new option and leave the
  541. option box or you can use the up and down arrow keys to
  542. set another option.  If you use the up or down arrow keys
  543. to move to another option, the option you just changed
  544. will be updated and set and a mark will indicate you have
  545. changed that item.  The item is already changed; pressing
  546. ESC will still leave that item changed.
  547.  
  548. If you are in the middle of changing an option and you
  549. decide you don't want to change it after all, you can
  550. press the ESC key.  If that item has not yet been marked
  551. as changed, that particular option will remain unchanged
  552. and you will exit the option box.
  553.  
  554. The startup values for most of the parameters in the
  555. option boxes are contained in a special configuration file
  556. called PCO.CFG.  Each time PC-OUTLINE is started it reads
  557. this file and loads the startup values from it.  To set
  558. new default parameters, press the F10 key while in an
  559. option box and those parameters will be saved to the
  560. configuration file as they are listed in the option box.
  561.  
  562. Note that, when saving new values to the configuration
  563. file, PC-OUTLINE will look for the PCO.CFG file in the
  564. current directory from when you started PC-OUTLINE.  If it
  565. is not there, then it will create one.  If the current
  566. directory is not where you want the configuration file to
  567. normally be then you can enter a file/path name in the
  568. CONFIGURATION option box in the ADVANCED menu to direct
  569. where it will go.
  570.  
  571. There are basically three types of options:
  572.  
  573. NUMBERS
  574.  
  575. An option like a left margin requires a number.  To change
  576. the left margin, simply enter a new number.
  577.  
  578. CHOICES
  579.  
  580. Some options offer you a series of choices.  To change the
  581. option, you must pick a new choice.  For example,
  582. paragraph alignment can be one of four choices:  left
  583. aligned, right aligned, justified, centered.  To toggle
  584. through the different choices, press the space bar.  The
  585. left and right arrows also work for toggling.  The right
  586. arrow works just like the space bar and the left arrow
  587. goes the reverse order through the choices.
  588.  
  589. If you already know which choice you want, you can just
  590. press the first letter of the desired choice.  For
  591. example, pressing the letter "j" would select justified in
  592. the above example.  Note that this can be useful when
  593. defining a macro because you can select a specific option
  594. without knowing what it was previously set to.
  595.  
  596. STRINGS
  597.  
  598. Some options require you to input some series of
  599. characters.  One such example would be a filename.  In
  600. this case, you are free to edit the name as you type.  The
  601. following keys are active:  Home, End, INS, DEL,
  602. Backspace, Left Arrow, and Right Arrow.

  605.                CREATING YOUR FIRST OUTLINE
  606.                ---------------------------
  607.  
  608.    ENTERING INFORMATION INTO THE FIRST OUTLINE ELEMENT

  611. Once you have loaded PC-OUTLINE, passed the shareware
  612. screen, and started an outline file from the opening menu,
  613. you are ready to create an outline.  The screen will show
  614. an "A." and then the cursor.  The "A." indicates you are
  615. in the first outline element.  To enter information into
  616. this first outline element, just type.  The information in
  617. an outline element can be anything from a single word to a
  618. multi-page document.  If you type enough words to get to
  619. the right margin, the cursor will automatically wrap
  620. around and start the next line.
  621.  
  622.            CREATING THE SECOND OUTLINE ELEMENT
  623.            -----------------------------------
  624.  
  625. When you are ready to start a second outline element,
  626. press the INS key.  This starts the FILE menu.  Press the
  627. right arrow key to enter the OUTLINE menu.  Now choose
  628. CREATE NEW OUTLINE ENTRY (note that you can also do this
  629. with the shortcut keystroke ^N or ^RET).
  630.  
  631. This will present you with a reverse video "B." positioned
  632. one line after the last piece of text in "A.".  Notice
  633. that the bottom line of the screen now contains the
  634. message: "ENTER TEXT OR PRESS ARROWS TO MOVE THIS NEW
  635. ENTRY."

  637.          POSITIONING THE SECOND OUTLINE ELEMENT

  640. Before typing any other characters, you can make this new
  641. entry a sub-entry of "A." by pressing the right arrow.  If
  642. it was already a sub-entry, you could promote it up a
  643. level by pressing the left arrow.  You could also switch
  644. places with "A." by pressing the up arrow.  The down arrow
  645. will switch back again.  As soon as you type any
  646. characters, the "B." will change back to normal video and
  647. you can no longer move the entry in this manner and the
  648. message at the bottom of the screen will change back to
  649. the message about menus.  There are other commands for
  650. moving the entry once you have typed characters.

  652. By repeating this process of typing text and choosing
  653. CREATE NEW OUTLINE ENTRY, you can create as simple or
  654. complex an outline structure as you want.

  656.                  HIDING OUTLINE ELEMENTS

  659. A major advantage of organizing information in an outline
  660. structure is that you can hide levels of detail.  Supposed
  661. we had the example outline listed below.  If we position
  662. the cursor in element B. and select CURRENT ENTRY'S
  663. CHILDREN from the HIDE menu, the sub-entries (from now on
  664. referred to as children) of B. will disappear.  Select
  665. CURRENT ENTRY'S CHILDREN from the SHOW menu and they will
  666. reappear.  The GRAY PLUS key on the right side of the
  667. keyboard can be used as a shortcut to toggle the
  668. hide/unhide status of children.

  697. Within any given outline element, you have three viewing
  698. choices.  You may either see the entire entry (the default
  699. case), you may see either just the first line of the entry
  700. (we say the text is hidden), or the entire entry might be
  701. hidden as in the above section.  To see just the first
  702. line of a multi-line entry, choose CURRENT ENTRY'S TEXT
  703. from the HIDE menu.  To see the rest of the lines again,
  704. choose CURRENT ENTRY'S TEXT from the SHOW menu.  The ^PgDn
  705. key works as a shortcut toggle to alternately hide and
  706. show the multiple lines.  Note also that typing any
  707. character (including a right arrow) in an entry
  708. automatically shows the multiple lines.

  836.                      ABOUT PRINTERS

  839. PC-OUTLINE uses a printer driver in order to have the
  840. capability of supporting a number of different printers.
  841. Each printer driver is a special file format containing
  842. the printer codes for the desired printer for the print
  843. features that PC-OUTLINE uses.  The disk that PC-OUTLINE
  844. comes on has as many printer drivers as we currently have
  845. available.   To find out if your printer is supported, run
  846. the program on the disk called PCPRINT.COM by typing
  847. PCPRINT to the dos prompt.  If your printer is not
  848. specified in the list, then you have two choices:
  849.  
  850. 1)   You may choose to not use any special print features.
  851.      Normal printing will most likely work even if your
  852.      printer is not specifically supported.
  853.  
  854. 2)   You may create your own printer driver by entering
  855.      the codes yourself in the PRINT CONFIGURATION menu in
  856.      PC-OUTLINE and saving them to a new printer driver
  857.      file.  Note you should change the printer driver name
  858.      also to avoid conflicts with the already existing
  859.      drivers.

  862.              USING PC-OUTLINE ON A HARD DISK
  863.              -------------------------------
  864.  
  865. It is possible to set up PC-OUTLINE so that you can start
  866. it from anywhere on your hard disk by just typing a simple
  867. three letter name.  You will never again need to worry
  868. about which directory you are in when you want to run
  869. PC-OUTLINE.  Dos will automatically find the program, run
  870. it, and PC-OUTLINE will set the starting directory as
  871. desired.  To accomplish this, follow these steps:
  872.  
  873. 1)   Set up a directory on your hard disk where you wish
  874.      to keep your PC-OUTLINE files.  For purposes of
  875.      explanation, I will refer to a directory called
  876.      C:\OUTLINE (you can use any name you want).
  877.  
  878. 2)   Copy the files PCO.EXE, PCO.CFG, and the appropriate
  879.      printer driver to the C:\OUTLINE directory.
  880.  
  881. 3)   Add the following command to your autoexec.bat file:
  882.      SET PCO=C:\OUTLINE\PCO.CFG.
  883.  
  884. 4)   Set a path to the outline directory (preferably in
  885.      your autoexec.bat file so it is always set).  For
  886.      example, use the command "PATH C:\OUTLINE".
  887.  
  888. 5)   Now, from anywhere on your hard disk, you can type
  889.      PCO.  The DOS path will find the batch file PCO.EXE
  890.      and run it.  PC-OUTLINE will look in the dos
  891.      environment (where the SET PCO= command is stored)
  892.      and find out where to look for the configuration
  893.      file.  The configuration file will tell PC-OUTLINE
  894.      what directory to start off with for outline files
  895.      (set in the CONFIGURATION option box in the ADVANCED
  896.      menu.  It sounds complicated, but once you have set
  897.      it up, all you have to type is "PCO" and your path,
  898.      the SET command, and the configuration file will do
  899.      all the rest.

  902.          SITE LICENSES AND BUNDLING ARRANGEMENTS

  905. Corporate site licenses and bundling arrangements are
  906. available direct from SoftWorks Development.

  908. Site licenses can be used to distribute large quantities
  909. of PC-OUTLINE and its documentation within a specific
  910. organization at very reasonable prices (hundreds of
  911. dollars less per copy than competing products).  All users
  912. under a site license can become registered users at no
  913. extra fee and are automatically notified of updates.

  915. Bundling arrangements can be used to distribute copies of
  916. PC-OUTLINE in order to promote some other product or
  917. service.
