  1.            THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK USER'S MANUAL - CONDENSED VERSION

  4. INTRODUCTION
  5.  
  6. THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK is a very handy software package with the following
  7. features:
  8.  
  9.   1. You can create your own personal telephone directory with names, phone
  10.      numbers, addresses and notes. The directory can be printed in a pocket
  11.      size format and slipped into the leatherette cover supplied with the
  12.      product. The name of the program to create your directory is "BOOK".
  13.      To have a demonstration on how you would do it, run the program "DEMO".
  14.  
  15.   2. Your telephone directory can be loaded in your PC in such a way that 
  16.      it is always available to you, no matter what other program you are 
  17.      running.  If you have a Hayes compatible modem or a Cygnet dialer board,
  18.      the program lets you dial the phone numbers automatically, including 
  19.      special dialing methods such as SPRINT or MCI. The name of this program
  20.      is "LBB".  After loading "LBB" and another application program, to 
  21.      invoke the directory, simply press the Alt and Space bar keys and the 
  22.      directory will pop up, momentarily suspending the main program. After 
  23.      dialing and exiting, you may continue with the main program.

  25.   3. You can dial phone numbers directly from the screen or PC keyboard by
  26.      pressing the Alt and s keys. This will pop up a screen dialer that 
  27.      lets you locate phone numbers in the screen (from another application 
  28.      program) and dial them by simply pressing the Enter key.
  29.  
  30.   4. If you have the Cygnet dialer board you can automate special PBX 
  31.      features that would require you to enter a sequence of hook flash, *,
  32.      # and digits to activate, which is generally hard to remember. See 
  33.      Dialing Methods below for some examples.

  36. CREATING YOUR DIRECTORY
  37.  
  38. Load the program "BOOK". After completing the "System Configuration" menu
  39. select the "Add Directory Entry" option with the cursor key and then press
  40. Enter. Fill in name and phone number. Notice that phone numbers can be 
  41. entered in the North American format, free format for international numbers
  42. and PBX extensions for internal numbers. Next enter the dialing method by 
  43. typing the appropriate one or two digit number.
  44.  
  45. The dialing method is simply the dialing steps you go through before you
  46. start dialing the actual number. There are a number of preconfigured 
  47. dialing methods that will probably work fine for you. If not, they can be 
  48. easily changed. A detailed explanation of dialing methods is given below.

  50. The next step is to assign your entry to the "Index Listing". Look at the
  51. Index Listing as the Yellow pages of your directory.
  52.  
  53. You can define 27 categories such as Friends, Consultants, Restaurants,
  54. Administration, Sales, etc... and you can assign your entry to one or more
  55. of these categories. Three categories are predefined. The first is "Most
  56. Freq. Used Voice #" and the other two are reserved for future products.
  57. The "Most frequently used voice number" is the index that pops up 
  58. automatically when you invoke the directory in the middle of a program 
  59. (by pressing Alt and Space bar keys).
  60.  
  61. You should assign to this category those entries that you call the most
  62. frequently.

  64. To define or change index categories, simply press "Def. Index" (F5).
  65.  
  66. You can now complete the entry by filling in the address and notes. After
  67. making all of your entries, you can print your directory by selecting the
  68. "Print Directory" option from the main menu and following the self-
  69. explanatory instructions.

  73. DIALING METHODS
  74.  
  75. You can create or modify dialing methods either from the "Dialing Method"
  76. option of the main menu or directly during entry. Select a method that you
  77. wish to create or modify with the cursor key and then hit the Enter key.

  79. The most important thing now is to THINK through all of the steps you take,
  80. (sometimes subconsciously), to dial a number, and then specify them as a 
  81. sequence of steps that you pick up from the "Dialing Operations" menu. For 
  82. example, if your phone is connected to a PBX that requires you to dial 9 to 
  83. get an outside line, and you want to dial long distance using SPRINT or 
  84. other, you can create your dialing method as follows:

  86. Name ..............................enter      SPRINT
  87. Select "Dial a digit sequence" and enter      9
  88. Select "Pause 0 to 60 seconds" and enter      2
  89. Select "Dial a digit sequence" and enter      1234567  (The local exchange
  90.                                                         number for SPRINT)
  91. Select "Listen for dial tone"   (This means that you will need to pick up the
  92.   handset, when prompted, and listen for dial tone. At the tone, press any
  93.   key to continue the dialing process.)
  94. Select "Dial a digit sequence" and enter      123456   (This is your password)
  95. Select "Dial number with area code"
  96.  
  97. And you are done! Anytime in the future you will specify this dialing method
  98. for your number, the above sequence will be automatically carried out for you.

  100. Other dialing method examples:
  101.  
  102. Call Transfer
  103.   Hook Flash
  104.   Pause 2 seconds
  105.   Dial *7
  106.   Dial last 3 digits
  107.  
  108. With this dialing method you can create an entry such as Transfer to Joan in
  109. your directory. By entering Joan's extension number and specifying the above
  110. method, you will be able to transfer your calls to Joan automatically.

  112. You can do this, of course, only if your phone system supports call transfer.
  113.  
  114. United Kingdom
  115.   Dial 01144            (International access code and country code)
  116.   Dial last 12 digits   (City code and phone number you will provide,
  117.                          up to 12 digits long)
  118.  
  119. The above dialing method is specifically for the United Kingdom since it has
  120. a fixed country code.  If you call many different international numbers, then
  121. you may use the following dialing method which is applicable to all countries:

  123. International Number
  124.   Dial 011              (International access code)
  125.   Dial last 14 digits   (Country code, city code and phone number you
  126.                          will provide, up to 14 digits long)

  130. VIEWING AND DIALING NUMBERS WHILE RUNNING OTHER PROGRAMS

  132. One major feature of THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK is to allow you to view and 
  133. dial phone numbers while in the middle of another program.
  134.  
  135. To do this you should load the program "LBB" right after DOS. You may find
  136. it convenient to include LBB as part of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that
  137. everytime you restart your PC the program is automatically loaded. At this
  138. point you can load another program, e.g. Lotus 123, and operate normally.

  140. If in the middle of Lotus 123 you wish to call someone, simply press Alt
  141. and Space bar keys and the directory will pop up displaying the most fre-
  142. quently used numbers first. If the party you wish to call is not in this
  143. list, you can find it by entering one or more letters of his last name, and
  144. the screen will display all entries starting with that combination.
  145.  
  146. Alternatively you can select an index category and all entries belonging
  147. to that category will be displayed.

  149. To dial the number, simply enter the two digit number next to the wanted
  150. entry, and your PC will do the rest. At the beep pick up the handset and
  151. you will be connected. By pressing Exit (F1), you will be right back on
  152. your Lotus 123.

  154. With your "LBB" loaded you can also redial the last number dialed, view
  155. the list of area codes and associated locations, hang up the handset 
  156. without having to physically do it, and invoke the "Screen dialer".

  158. The screen dialer is activated by pressing Alt and S keys and allows you 
  159. to do the following:
  160.  
  161. 1. Select which dialing method is to be used as a default by using the 
  162.    "Pick Method" function key. E.g. SPRINT.
  163.  
  164. 2. Enter numbers to be dialed from the PC keyboard and dial them by 
  165.    pressing the Enter key
  166.  
  167. 3. Pick phone numbers directly from the screen of another application 
  168.    program using the "Find Number" function key and dial them with the 
  169.    Enter key.
  170.  
  171. 4. Keep the last 5 numbers that were dialed so that you may redial any
  172.    of them later.

  174. Again, after using the screen dialer, you can exit and go right back to 
  175. your application by pressing Exit (F1).
  176.  
  177. If you do not have a Hayes compatible modem, you can purchase a Cygnet 
  178. dialer board ($69.95) by calling Cygnet at 1-800-621-4292, in California 
  179. use 1-800-331-9113. You can even try your screen dialer to find these 
  180. numbers. If you don't wish to autodial, the LBB can still be very useful 
  181. to search for the phone numbers of people that you wish to call.
