  1.                          IDEA TREE
  2.                  INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  3.  
  4. This section provides all the information you need to get
  5. IDEA TREE up and running.  It tells you how to install and
  6. start IDEA TREE.  It also tells you how to print the manual
  7. included in this diskette.  Finally, we recommend that you
  8. run the IDEA TREE tutorial.  This is the fastest way to get
  9. familiar with the system, and it shows you how to use the
  10. command tree as an on-line help facility.
  11.  
  12. 1. Hardware And Software Requirements
  13.  
  14. Hardware: IBM or IBM-compatible, 256K RAM, hard disk and one
  15.           5.25" floppy disk drive, or two 5.25" floppy disk
  16.           drives.
  17.           CGA, monochrome or black and white monitor
  18.           Epson, or Epson compatible dot matrix printer, or
  19.           IBM ProPrinter or compatible.
  20.  
  21. Software: DOS 2.1 or higher
  22.  
  23. 2. Installing The Program
  24.  
  25. Your IDEA TREE package includes a manual and a 5.25" floppy
  26. diskette containing the IDEA TREE program.  Before using
  27. IDEA TREE, you should make a backup copy of the program.
  28.

  30.      2.1. Backing Up With Two Floppy Disk Drives
  31.      
  32.      If you have a computer with two disk drives, turn on
  33.      the computer and boot the system with your DOS
  34.      diskette.  When the "A>" prompt appears on the screen,
  35.      remove the DOS diskette from Drive A.  Put the program
  36.      diskette into drive A and a blank diskette into Drive
  37.      B.  Type
  38.      
  39.                           COPY A:*.* B:
  40.      
  41.      and press <ENTER>.  This command copies all the program
  42.      and demo files from the original program diskette to
  43.      your backup.  When the message
  44.      
  45.                          17 files copied
  46.      
  47.      appears on the screen, remove the diskettes from the
  48.      drives.  Put your original program diskette in a safe
  49.      place.  You should use the backup copy as your working
  50.      diskette.

  52.      2.2. Backing Up With A Hard Disk Drive
  53.           
  54.      If you have a computer with a hard disk and one floppy
  55.      disk drive, we will assume that your hard disk is
  56.      formatted and is running DOS Version 2.1 or higher.
  57.      Turn on your computer.  The "C>" prompt should appear.
  58.      Place the program diskette into Drive A.  Type
  59.      
  60.                              MD\IDEA

  62.      and press <ENTER>.  This creates a separate directory
  63.      on the hard disk called "C:\IDEA".  Now type
  64.      
  65.                              CD\IDEA
  66.      
  67.      and press <ENTER>.  The prompt should now look like
  68.      this:

  70.                             C:\IDEA>
  71.      
  72.      This is the directory where your working copy of IDEA
  73.      TREE will be stored.  Type
  74.      
  75.                        COPY A:*.* C:\IDEA
  76.      
  77.      and press <ENTER>.  All of the program and demo files
  78.      are now copied into the C:\IDEA directory.  When the
  79.      message

  83.      appears on the screen, remove the program diskette from
  84.      Drive A and put it in a safe place.  Use the copy of
  85.      IDEA TREE stored in your C:\IDEA directory as your
  86.      working program.

  91. 3. Starting The Program
  92.  
  93. The way IDEA TREE is started depends on whether you have a
  94. system with one floppy disk drive, two floppy disk drives or
  95. a hard disk with one or more floppy disk drives.
  96.      
  97.      3.1. Starting Up With One Floppy Disk Drive
  98.      
  99.      Turn on your computer and boot up with your DOS
  100.      diskette in Drive A as usual.  Remove the DOS diskette
  101.      and place your working copy of IDEA TREE into Drive A.
  102.      Now type
  103.      
  104.                               IDEA
  105.      
  106.      and press <ENTER>.  This loads IDEA TREE, during which
  107.      it figures out what type of monitor is on the machine.
  108.      However, with certain computers with earlier operating
  109.      system versions, this may come out wrong if it is other
  110.      than a color monitor.  In this case, exit IDEA TREE
  111.      (press <G>o to <E>xit) and start again by typing
  112.      
  113.                              IDEA B
  114.      and pressing <ENTER>.
  115.      
  116.      When you are ready to save a tree file to a diskette,
  117.      remove the IDEA TREE diskette from Drive A.  Put a
  118.      formatted, blank diskette into Drive A.  When you use
  119.      the <F>ile <S>ave function, your tree file will be
  120.      saved to this diskette.  You should then put your
  121.      working copy of IDEA TREE back into Drive A in order to
  122.      continue working with the program.

  124.      3.2. Starting Up With Two Floppy Disk Drives
  125.      
  126.      Turn on your computer and boot up with your DOS
  127.      diskette in Drive A as usual.  Remove the DOS diskette
  128.      and place your working copy of IDEA TREE into Drive A
  129.      and a formatted, blank diskette into Drive B.  The
  130.      diskette in Drive B will be used to store your IDEA
  131.      TREE files as you create them.

  133.      Now type

  137.      and press <ENTER>.  This loads IDEA TREE, during which
  138.      it figures out what type of monitor is on the machine.

  167. 4. Printing The Manual
  168.  
  169. This shareware diskette includes the IDEA TREE manual.  You
  170. can print this manual out by typing 
  171.  
  172.                 MANUAL

  174. at the DOS command line.  Make sure that your printer is
  175. turned on, and then press <ENTER>.  The manual is about 53
  176. pages long.
  177.  
  178. 5. The IDEA TREE Tutorial
  179.  
  180. The concepts of idea decomposition may be new to you.  The
  181. IDEA TREE tutorial included in this diskette introduces you
  182. to these concepts by using a set of examples that develop 
  183. idea trees in steps.  
  184.  
  185. IDEA TREE is completely menu driven and its commands should
  186. be intuitively easy to use.  However, the tutorial will also
  187. present you with an overview of IDEA TREE's many
  188. applications.
  189.  
  190. For these reasons, we strongly urge you to spend the 45
  191. minutes or so the tutorial requires before you start
  192. creating your own trees.
  193.  
  194. If you choose to use IDEA TREE without going through the
  195. tutorial, start the program and then load the file DEMO1.
  196. DEMO1 contains a brief description of each of IDEA TREE's
  197. commands and how to use them.

  199. To print the tutorial, type

  203. at the DOS command line.  Make sure that your printer is
  204. turned on, and then press <ENTER>.  The tutorial is 12 pages
  205. long.
