Computerized Handicap Program
This program was developed by Ernest Montoya in 1981 and used
in a business called COMPUTERIZED HANDICAPPING SERVICE in
1981, 1982, and 1983.
I am now placing it in the public domain, in order for other horse
lovers to enjoy it and maybe profit from it. Now, you may ask
"why is he giving away what could be a money maker?" Well, my
horse loving friends, I am getting on in age, my wife is ill,
I am her caretaker, and we don't get to the track
anymore. Therefore, I did not want this program to die with me, so I
am placing it in this medium hoping that someone will make
a donation for my troubles. Any donation will be gratefully
accepted. Please make copies for yourself and your friends and
place in your local BBS's for others to copy and enjoy.
Send Donations to:

I also want to thank the following people for encouraging me
to place it in the public domain:
Brian Abbott, SYSOP for IECG BBS 714-825-4042
Russell Terry, SYSOP for Yucaipa Valley Zoo BBS 714-797-7432
Now for a little history; I have been handicapping the
thoroughbred horses for over 40 years as a hobby, my vocation
was as a firefighter. I retired from the Fire Dept. in 1979
after 32 years of service. I am not a gambler, I love the
horses and to me the thrill is in watching my pick come from
5th place at the 3/4 pole to nip the leader at the wire. You
football fans can have your touchdown, or baseball fans, the
homerun.
Well enough, let's get down to the nuts and bolts:
1: Get a racing form the day before the race. The
information you will need comes from it.
2: Make forms as outlined here:
______________________________________________________
! \str.\last\clas\mony\last\expt\jock\age !

!and so on down as many horses are running \/ \/ \/ !
3: You work on a scale of 1 to 10 never more, never less.
You start with a medium of 5.
4: For stretch drive of last race, you give 1 point for every
length he gained to the finish.
For example:
WHIRLAWAY was 5th at the 3/4 pole and finished 3rd,
therefore WHIRLAWAY gets 2 points plus the 5 medium, which is 7, and so
on. Never more then 10. Even if he had gained 6 lengths, WHIRLAWAY
would only get 10 points.
For another example:
WHIRLAWAY was 5th at the 3/4 pole and finished 8th,
therefore WHIRLAWAY gets deducted 3 points from the 5 medium and
gets 2 points in his slot for stretch drive (str.drv.)
5: For last three finishes you give 2 points for every 1st
place, 1 point for every 2nd place, the medium (5) for all
other finishes.
For example:
WHIRLAWAY had 1, 1st place finish, therefore he gets 2 points
plus the medium = 7.
6: For class, he gets 3 points if he is dropping in class and
loses 3 points if he is going up in class.
For example:
WHIRLAWAY is dropping in class from his last race, therefore he
gets 3 points plus the medium = 8.
7: For money won, he gets 4 points for being the biggest money
winner in this race, 3 points for next best, 2 points for
next best, and 1 point for 4th best and all the rest get the
medium (5).
For example:
WHIRLAWAY is the 2nd best money winner, therefore he gets 3
points plus the medium = 8 in his slot for MONEY WON.
8: For last day raced, every horse in this one race gets 2
points for having raced within 2 weeks, 1 point for having
raced within 3 weeks, just the medium for having raced within
4 weeks, and gets deducted 1 point for every week after 4
weeks.
For example:
WHIRLAWAY raced the last time 5 weeks ago, therefore he gets
deducted 1 point from the medium = 4.
9: For experts selection, in the consensus selection a horse
gets 3 points for top choice, 2 points for 2nd choice and 1
point for 3rd choice. All other horses in this one race get
only the medium (5).
10: For jockey, you look at the jockey standings elsewhere in
the RACING FORM(c) and give the horse with the top jockey 3
points, next best 2 points, next best 1 point, others 5 points.
11: For age, it is common knowledge among horse players that
an older horse will beat a younger horse, not always true but
deserves some consideration. So, give the oldest horse 3 points.
If there is more than one, give each one 2 points, all others
get just the medium(5).
Now for some footnotes:
To start off, stay away from maiden and filly races, for the
simple reason that maiden races don't have much of a history,
and fillies because they never seem to run to form. So on
these races-- take a break.
Never bet more than you can afford. There have been days in
my past when I had the horses handicapped and never bet a
dime. I just enjoyed the racing part.
To start the program, have your aforementioned form all
filled out. Load up your basic program, then from basic load
<handicap> and run. You will be instructed as you go thru the
program. If you have a printer, it will print a copy with the
percentages of each horse. After you have your printout you
can easily see which are the better picks.
I gather that all who have come this far in the instructions
are well versed computer knowledgeable people. Whoever sends me a
donation will receive a letter from me giving you my ultimate
secrets of handicapping.
