INTRODUCTION
BECOME A BOWLING LEAGUE SECRETARY
A new software system enters the 'Home office' category to allow
a work at home person new avenues of income from their PC.
Bowling League Secretaries perform a hard thankless task for
their leagues. Their main job is to keep track of team
standings to determine a season winning team. Most leagues are
'handicap' leagues. The system maintains current team & bowler
averages, handicaps, number of games bowled, high games and
series (scratch and handicap) and reports these statistics on a
weekly basis. Three games per person per night, five people per
team and an average of ten teams per league make for a lot of
paper work.
HGR_BOWLING League Secretary system is designed to take the
drudgery out of being a bowling league secretary. The system
turns a ten team four hour a week 'pencil, erasure and paper'
job into a twenty minute cake-walk. Most league secretaries
receive compensation for doing the job. Some secretaries moon-
light and take on more than one league.
Quick and EASY.
Just enter team number once per team:
bowler number once per bowler:
bowler's three games per night and get:
Automatic team positions; new handicaps; averages etc.
The Bowling Secretary program will allow:
98 teams per league (disk space).
999 bowlers per league.
Mixed league with separated weekly and season stats.
Do substitutes; automatic blind or absent scores and allow
bowlers to change teams.
Required game accumulation before updating handicaps.
Auditing rehash or editing of any bowler/s or team scores and
points at any time.
Keep records for a split league (A/B divisions) or split
season. Can be started mid season.
The Bowling Secretary will print out:
Weekly team, bowler, pairing sheets with averages, handicaps
and team points.
A standard Weekly performance sheet showing team status and
two column grouped bowler status. Three each Team/Bowler
high games, games handicapped, high series, handicap series.
Special reports include:
Lane assignment for the season sheet.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 6
Team rosters with telephone and address fields for each
bowler.
The paid for version maintains and reports on a 'History'
file which shows: Individual bowler or entire league complete
history sheet available at any time.
Improved Bowler report will show first week bowled, present
average and the difference between start and present.
Requirements: 512K bytes of RAM.
*ONE* 360K disk drive will work but faster on a hard drive.
Printer Support: Epson; IBMgraphic; Okdata 192 series; Apple
Imagewriter and Citoh 1880/3550/L-310-15 PR family.
TEST RUN
BACKUP YOUR DISK! with Dos DISKCOPY;. Use your NEW DISK.
Input a team number, bowler number and bowler scores;
next bowler and scores. Easy as that!
DOS RENAME 'HGRBOWL.EXE' to 'BOWL.EXE' or keep a mental note to use
HGRBOWL in place of BOWL in the following document.
TO RUN: Type in BOWL from the A: prompt if disk is on A:.
To get the feel of the system, sample bowler and team files are
included. Just start by doing a mock weekly new score input. You
can go into the report area and test your printer against the
included printer setup. Do a score sheet and performance sheet
print out. If you get scrambled 'printed line wrap' see the
PRINTER CONTROL FILE information.
If you have a league established, you then could go to the
maintenance menu and use the 'START NEW LEAGUE' option. This will
remove team and bowler stats and allow you start inputting your own
leagues specifications.
RUNNING
NORMAL WEEKS RUN
(presumes you have done 'start up' or just testing)
Input new bowler scores (Option #3): (The input option will show the
'system week number' if the system has not been updated yet.
Before entering the first weeks scores this should be "week 0".
LOGICALLY before the second weeks scorers are started it will say
"week 1".)
Selecting 'New Scores' ask if you are ready to start new weeks
input. A 'Yes' answer will automatically will setup for new
weeks input or go directly to scoring if you where interrupted
and came back to finish.
Just run this option when you have new scores to input since it
will change week, date and lane schedules for reports.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 7
You can start with any *pair* of teams. The system will check for
duplication of bowler and team numbers across the pairings but
not with in the same pairing.
DO NOT PUT IN a team from one pairing against a team from a
another pairing since they are not on a PAIR lanes.
If just starting the new scores you will asked if ready to update
files.
If you interrupted scoring and left the scoring menu, you will go
straight back to score screen.
You can accidentally not finish all teams and do a Weekly Sheet
print out so be careful to mark your score sheets as you input
them.
Speed Tips
Toggle 'CAPS LOCK' and 'NUMLOCK' ON and use number pad for score
input. Takes a while to get used to but the speed enhancement is
worth the effort.
If you are using a 8088 PC with floppy disks, you can type-a-head
of the computer while it is 'UPDATING' the previous two teams
stats. If you are really fast, the computer will beep when the
type-a-head buffer is full and UPDATING is not done yet.
Verify
Upon completion of all teams scores you will be shown the team
points and standings.
If you pencil in the new points on each sheet while inputting
scores it is easy to verify. You can always re-verify the
points and positions from the report menu.
Run your reports and that is all there is to it! You are ready for
the next week. DO NOT USE OPTION #3 TO UPDATE before printing
reports since it will add one week to bowling week and date.
You may want to copy all the .dbf's each week.
Do this from DOS and PUT the copies on a separate disk.
Use DOS >`` COPY A:*.dbf b:*.001 ''. If you are using a harddrive
replace A: with your drive designator. Replace the .001 with the
appropriate week number. Do this right after updating and all
scores are in and checked. The size of your league will determine
the number of weeks you can get on a disk. If the disk runs out of
space, do the back up again on a new labeled disk.
Use an ARC option and give a unique name for week bowled. Create a
new .arc or zip for each week will be the fastest way.
FIRST TIME START-UP
BACKUP YOUR DISK! Use Dos DISKCOPY. Use the BACKUP DISK.
After installing BOWL you could make a new back disk to play safe.
This will accumulate extra disks but save a lot of work if you mess
up later.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 8
INSTALL on a Hard disk system:
Put backup disk in drive and log onto the drive from DOS.
Type in the word INSTALL C: if your harddisk is a C:drive. The
install program will do the work for you. You will have to copy
the appropriate LANE file and PRINTER file for you requirements.
The Install does the following.
Use DOS 'MD \BOWL' command from your *top* hard disk subdirectory.
Cd \bowl and COPY A:*.* into the BOWL subdirectory.
Type in BOWL and hit enter key.
At the 'replace disk prompt' strike any key. Select 2] for
maintenance and 8] to make new leagues. Hit 'N' for new. and 'Y'
for yes if you have hidden your copy of the original HGR_BOWLING
League Secretary disk in a safe place.
If you are going to do more than one league then make a subdirectory
below \BOWL and give each one a easy name to remember for each
league. Example: MD \BOWL\SUN for a Sunday league etc. Copy
every thing from \BOWL\*.* \BOWL\SUN To save space you can delete
each BOWL.EXE and use the command \BOWL\BOWL to do each league.
Exit to Dos. Now delete unused printer control files (not
syscntl.dbf) to allow room for your league and history files to
grow.
Floppy disk system:
You are using the BACKUP DISK aren't you?
Make a blank disk and copy 'Bowl.exe' to it. That is the only file
you will need on the 'run' disk so you could make a 'boot' disk
(see Dos manual {FORMAT A:/S}).
Copy the HGR_BOWLING League Secretary disk to one master data disk.
Put in the 'RUN' disk and now type in BOWL and hit enter key.
At the 'replace disk prompt' but in your 'MASTER LEAGUE' disk and
strike any key. Select 2] for maintenance and 8] to make new
leagues. Hit 'N' for new. and 'Y' for yes if you have hidden your
copy of the original HGR_BOWLING League Secretary disk in a safe
place.
Exit to Dos. Now delete 'BOWL.EXE' and unused printer control files
(not syscntl.dbf) to allow room for your league and history files
to grow.
Label your disks with 'BOWL' for the running disk and 'Master league
data disk' for the league disk.
You now should have the:
1. Original Professional HGR_BOWLING League Secretary disk.
2. A master BOWL disk with BOWL.EXE and SYSCNTL.DBF on it.
3. A master LEAGUE disk with:
A. SYSCNTL.DBF
B. BWCNTRL.DBF
C. TEAM.DBF
D. BOWLER.DBF
F. BWLANE.DBF
G. BWTMPNPT
F. ALLHIST.dbf
You will have a few miscellaneous index (.NDX), TEMP and restore
(.SAF) files. These are OK.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 9
From a floppy type BOWL then change disks to your 'Master league data
disk.
From duel floppy drives with 'Master league data disk' on A: and
'Bowl' disk on B:; log onto A: (>A:) then type B:Bowl (enter).
From the floppy league disk with BOWL on hard drive type
C:\Subdirectory\BOWL using the subdirectories name with BOWL.
The system will say "replace disk and strike any key".
If on a floppy drive just have the right league disk inserted and
hit a key. On a league subdirectory just hit any key.
EXAMPLE sub directory set up: Bowl.exe on C:\BOWL.
LEAGUES on C:\BOWL\YOULEAG1
C:\BOWL\YOULEAG2 etc.
You will be in C:\BOWL\YOULEAG1 and type \BOWL\BOWL
SETTING UP YOUR LEAGUE
You are going to get rid of the test league files included to make
room for your own bowlers, teams, lane and control file.
FROM THE MAIN MENU SELECT 2]
1. Go to Maintenance menu option 8] and use N)ew for new league. If
you where starting the league a second season you would use Z)ero
option.
New league option does not effect the BWLANE file. The test league
has 8 teams. If your league is not 8 teams then Q)uit and DOS
copy the lane file with your number of teams. If you do not find
your number use the next largest number.
Then restart BOWL and continue.
2. Then go to '4 ] option to edit/add bowlers and teams.
You must A)dd bowlers and teams. You will be asked for the bowler
number to search for. 1 for the first, 2 and so on. Fill in the
information. Old handicap and averages. Go on to the next bowler
or team until done. (You can exit out to Dos, go to lunch and
come back to finish. Leave the program up and you might come
back to a unpleasant surprise.)
Select the league control. A description follows for editing (not
adding) the control file. It and the SYSCONTROL file should never
have more than 1 record.
EDITOR INSTRUCTIONS:
MAIN EDITOR MENU
The auxiliary edit menu is used to get to the following files to edit
or add new information into them.
You get to the editor by using the 'Maintenance menu' and the sub-
option of '4 ] Add or Edit Bowlers;' option.

In order to add a bowler you will have to search for the bowler
number first to assure no duplicates. Be careful in the rest of
the files because you can add duplicates there.
All options are pretty much self explanatory. If you error out and
get the message 'A)bort I)gnore Q)uit' in the upper right hand of
the screen, use 'Q' for quit.
N)ewKey option will let you select a another field to search in. The
field numbers precede each field on the screen.
All software has little quirks of it's own. This includes 1 2 3,
dBASE, Word Perfect and all others. Professional HGR_BOWLING
League Secretary's editor has a personality of it's own also.
In the 'MAIN EDITOR MENU' (A)dd, E)dit, etc.).
1. You will start at the last record (Hit T)op to go to first
record#).
2. All options are as described.
In the '(E)dit' mode:
1. PageDown (PgDn) key will get you back to 'MAIN EDITOR MENU'
(A)dd, E)dit, etc.).
2. Down arrow or Enter will go to the next record in the search
sequence or the next record STILL IN THE EDIT MODE and the
cursor will be up in field #1 ready to edit!.
3. UpArrow cancels the E)dit mode and takes you to the previous
record in the ``dFLIPPER'' main arrow menu again.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary

Example: If you have to add 'head to head' points to each team; You could
hit (T) to go to the first team; Hit E)dit; dwnarrow to the TTPNTs;
change points; Hit PgDn and then down arrow for next record or team.
The cursor will be in the team number field and you will not have to
hit E)dit.
Care must be taken editing this file since the editor is 'Quick &
dirty' without error checking. Some fields are automatically
changed by the system but many need to be filled out by you.
W)ide editing (see appendix for examples)
W)ide causes a Lotus like display of the file you are using.
Arrow Keys move the cursor in expected directions
Ctrl Arrows move the columns by one if the field number and sizes
exceed the screen width.
Ctrl PgUp/Dn goes to the TOP or BOTTOM record.
Ctrl Home/End go to first or last fields.
ENTER toggles to edit field mode and again the arrow keys function
as expected within the field.
Insert, Delete, Backspace and normal keys edit the field.
Enter toggles back to BROWSE mode.
Escape toggles from Wide view back to single record view.
Example: If you have to add 'head to head' points to each team; You could
hit Ctrl PgUp to go to the first team; Move right with right arrow to
the TTPNTs; hit ENTER to change points; Hit down arrow for next
record. The cursor will be in the team TTPNTs field and you will
have to hit ENTER to edit the field.
Alt F5 function key for Calculator (see appendix for examples)
SYSTEM CONTROL FILE
Chances are the included printer file will work for your printer if
it is Epson, IBM graphic or Canon BJ-80 printer compatible.
Several sample control files called P_CITHO.DBF, P_OK192.DBF and
P_BJ80.DBF are included besides the original SYSCNTL.DBF file.
They are contained in a archive file called Printers.arc. Use
Pkxarc to extract them by doing PKXARC -E PRINTERS.
The BJ80 file should work with any IBM graphic or Epson compatible
printer. If you have an option between the two, go for the
IBMgraphic setting on your printer.
The CITOH file is for CITOH PROWRITER 1880, 1550 models and will
work with APPLE IMAGE WRITER, DMP, NEC 1810 printers.
Just do a Dos COPY P_BJ80.DBF SYSCNTL.DBF to make your selection.
If your printer is different than the included files then go into
the 'Maintenance menu' and select the 'Edit' option and then
the 'system control' option to get into and change the existing
SYSCNTL file to suit your printer.

LEAGUE CONTROL FILE
The following are the names of the fields, the type (character= text,
Numeric= numbers) and the width (Maximum character or numbers {2 in
a numeric field would mean a maximum number value of 99}). Below
the field description is an example.
-=+=-
Structure for database: BWCNTRL.dbf
Number of data records: 1
# Field Name Type Width
1 LEAGUE Character 20
Thursday Mixed Pin Boppers
2 ALLEY_NM Character 15

3 SECRETARY Character 20
Your name
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 13
If you are an absentee secretary then you might put the person's
name who will be in charge of disputes here. The treasurer or
whom ever.
4 SPLIT_LG Numeric 1
Some leagues optional elect to have divisions with in the league.
(nothing to do with a split season)
If an A) and B) league division is to be maintained during the
season, put a '1' here.
You must use A) or B) as the start of the team name. Example:
A)myteam or B)yourteam.
5 WK Numeric 2 (automatic)
Starting week number is 0
After inputting a full weeks scores the number will increment by
one.
If you ever have to restore from the backup file, this number
will also AUTOMATICALLY be restored to the appropriate week.
DO NOT EDIT during running season.
To start BOWL mid season with out back-filling (putting in first
weeks scores):
[EXAMPLE] To start input with the fifth weeks scores, enter the
number 4 (four) here. When Lanes, Teams and bowlers are set
up, you will say Yes to update for scores and the number will
be changed to 5 (five) automatically. You will have to have
put in total pins, games, points, averages and handicaps in
order for the system to add the fifth's week accumulations to
manually input totals.
This method would work just like you where doing it on paper
and calculator. Old accumulated figure plus new = performance
sheet totals and next weeks start up.
6 SEASON_BRK Numeric 2
Position bowl off week number if any and only the first one is
necessary.
If four season breaks are used then it would probably be on the
8th week since eight times four equals thirty-two weeks. This
would leave two required nights for championship roll offs.
The first night, the first quarter winner against the second
quarter winner. The third against the fourth quarter.
The second night would pit the two winners of the previous match
against each other.
7 BWZERO Numeric 1
For future update.
8 TMZERO Numeric 1
For future update.
9 MIXED Numeric 1
Mixed League (men and women)
0 for no and 1 for yes. For all men or all women league use 0.
10 BW_PER_TM Numeric 1
Normally five. Enter 5 or appropriate lessor number.
11 GMVALUE Numeric 1
Points to be given for a won game.
12 SERVALUE Numeric 1
Points to be given for a won series.
13 HCP_PCNT Numeric 2
Numbers like 75, 80 or 100.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 14
Your Bowling establishment will be able to help determine the
appropriate amount.
Statistics show even with 100% handicap the stronger teams will
have the best change to win.
14 HCP_BASE Numeric 3
Normally 200.
Check with previous years secretary for details. This is the
amount that the average is deducted from and the handicap
percent is multiplied times to give the current handicap once
the required number of games is achieved.
15 WHCP_PCNT Numeric 2
TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE FUTURE. Male and female handicap percent
and base must be the same.
16 WHCP_BASE Numeric 3
Women handicaps only if a mixed league.
17 MAX_HCP Numeric 3
Maximum Handicap: League rules apply here.
18 ABSENT_FRM Numeric 1
Absent Format: Normal format is '1' See next below.
19 ABSENT_VAL Numeric 3
The amount to be deducted for absentee.
A zero '0' will give the bowler average.
A ten '10' would deduct 10 from the average
20 WABSENT_VL Numeric 3
TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE FUTURE. Male and female
absent value must be the same.
21 BLIND_SCR Numeric 3
Blind Score format used if Option set to 2 in ABSENT_FRMat.
Use a league accepted value here like 160.
Every time you hit 'A' for bowler then this amount will be
inserted for the score if the absent format is 2.
No credit for bowling for the night so there is no change in the
bowlers average, games or pins.
22 WBLIND_SCR Numeric 3
Women's blind score if a mixed league and blind scores are used.
The absent bowlers number entered must be a females.
If a mixed league and blind bowler score players are allowed then
you must enter a dummy bowler named 'BLIND male' and 'BLIND
female' AND unique bowler numbers and check the appropriate
male/female box.
One league used unique blind bowlers for a couple of teams which
where short bowlers. A unique bowler number and average was
assigned to help balance out the team average.
23 GM_REQUIRE Numeric 2
Individual league rules may vary on when the bowlers average is
updated from their starting average. The number of games
required before updating goes here.
Some leagues try to discourage slacking off at the beginning of
the season or when a new team bowler starts mid season. Nine
games required is not unusual.
Pins and games are accumulated normally but the average and
handicap are not effected until the required number of games
are bowled.
24 TTWKS Numeric 2
Total weeks required in bowling season.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 15
25 TTTM Numeric 2
Total Leagues number of teams.
This could be changed mid season if need be.
The appropriate BWlane file schedules will have to be replaced.
26 TTBL Numeric 3
Total maximum number of Bowlers expected including BLIND bowlers if
any.
Highest bowlers number to be used on the league plus two if a
mixed league using 'BLIND' bowler scores.
This number is only utilized during scoring to check the bowler
number against the maximum allowable. If you add more bowlers
than your original conception then update this number to
correspond.
27 FIRSTLANE Numeric 2
The starting lane for the league.
A number 7 here would mean that the first lane for parings would
be number 7 and so on.
If you league has to change lanes then edit this number to
compensate.
28 LARGSCSHT Logical 1 {*T*rue or *F*alse option}
LARGE SCORE SHEET: A T for true will cause the weekly team pairings
sheet to be printed one sheet per pair of teams.
This will allow more than six bowlers per team sheet to be
printed.
29 LONGPERFRM Logical 1
LONG PERFORMANCE SHEET: Also true or false: T for true will cause a
single column print out of bowler's stats on the weekly
performance sheet. This will show more information per bowler
but make for a longer sheet.
30 PERFTMSRT Logical 1
PERFORMANCE SHEET WITH TEAM SORT: A future option to allow the
Performance Sheet to sort by Team instead of high averages.
31 WKGAMES Numeric 2 (automatic)
The total number of games input for the league for the week.
Do not edit!
32 UPDATE Numeric 1 (automatic)
Starts with a zero and changes automatically as the program is run.
Never edit this number EXCEPT to start a new season using old
teams and bowler numbers. It will be updated automatically
even if you restore previous weeks scores.
33 MSG Character 40 (automatic)
This message can be changed as the weekly paring score sheets are
printed out from the 'Score sheets' menu or the 'maintenance'
menu. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHANGE IT in the edit mode!
The same message will appear on the performance report AND the
score sheets between the two opposing teams. This is a great
way to chastise, praise or just say hi to the teams.

BOWLER CONTROL FILE
Most of the following are self explanatory. For a new season or new
bowler starting during the season you will fill out the appropriate
fields PRIOR to putting in their scores.
The system will maintain numeric changes automatically. If an error
is detected because the team score keeper marked the score
incorrectly of the wrong score was put into the computer you will
have to search the bowler and correct the information accordingly.
To start a new league hit A)dd a new bowler. The bowler number will
be suggested as per the record number. If you have entered two
bowlers and hit 'A', the next will come up with a bowler number of
three. To add bowlers after you may have dropped some bowlers, use
S)earch option for the bowler number you intend to use. If the
number is not found then say 'Yes' to add it to the list. If the
number is found repeat with a new number while adding new bowlers.
Input bowlers names, bowler number (must be unique) and team
number.
Team/lane paring sheets can show six bowlers per team on the
regular SCORE SHEET printout and about eight on the LARGSCSHT
configure option. If more than six bowlers on a team then use
substitute=1 and that bowler will not printout on parings sheet
but will print on weekly performance sheet. Use the performance
sheet handicap when this bowler bowls. Have the team change the
cumulative team handicap accordingly to maintain team standing
during play.
You can always come back and add more bowlers.
I always skip one or two numbers when going to the next team
lineup. This leaves room to add a mid-season substitute bowler
and still maintain a team sequence. Hit 'A' to add a new number.
Zero out the number, PageDown and Hit 'A' again to keep the auto
bowler numbering in sequence. This will automatically increase
the next bowler number by one. You can come back at a later date
and edit the zero to the desired bowler number.
If a bowler has to quit mid-season then just edit him to
'substitute' status and you will still be able to print out his
season end performance sheet.
Reassignment of his number to a new bowler will cause problems. The
performance sheet will show the starting bowlers name and scores as
well. (not the new bowlers name but only their score.)
TEAMS
Input team names until required number of teams has been added to the
system.
You can add, edit or delete teams at any time.
For a split league (A and B divisions) start the team name with
A)name or B)name. Where name is the team name (PinBuster
etc.). The weekly sheet will sort by division and position.
Team information is used to maintain the standings between teams.
Other than the team name and number all information is system
maintained.

LANES
Approved schedule are available with league secretary papers from
your bowling establishment.
If your league team number comprises of an included lane_##.dbf,
copy this as bwlane.dbf in the data area.
(Example= c:copy lane_10.dbf bwlane.dbf) Use the next largest
lane name indicator file if none are exactly your number.
Wide view will give the overall look at the LANE files. The Lotus
like columnar view will let you see about 18 weeks at a time and is
easier to use when inputting new schedules.
Some of the lane files are blank. As time and contributors dictate,
completed files will be added to the included disk files. The
included files of 6, 8 and 10 team lane files are complete and set
to bowl straight thru (no position night or snow breaks). You
might want to back out to the REPORT MENU and go to the AUXILIARY
REPORT MENU to print out the lane file first. Check for existing
position nights. Get an official schedule and start at the top.
It is best to fill it out with pencil first then:
<If starting with a completed file>
Put in the first date to bowl. HIT ENTER OR PgDn to get out of
editing and back to arrow menu. When you come to a position night,
hit (A) to add a new record. Put in the date and leave lanes as
zero until you know who will bowl there.
Hint: You can always eXit to the Auxiliary Report menu and take a
look at or print out your work as you proceed.
<If starting with a blank file with no records.>
Hit 'A' to input the first record and then your first date to bowl
and the team scheduled to bowl on each lane. Hit enter and do the
next lane/team until you come to the 'OK' FIELD. HIT ENTER OR PgDn
to get out of editing and back to arrow menu. When you come to a
position night, hit (A) to add a new record. Put in the date and
leave lanes as zero until you know who will bowl there.

(See first time start-up for editor instructions)
Normal logic applies to this as all computer programs. The system is
in actuality, an accounting package or more technically a tracking
system. Learning and successful use of the BOWLING League system
should merit you a raise at work. Tell your boss I said so!
If your work environment has computers you know what can mysteriously
happen to computer related files and programs. With this system,
however, you will also know that any thing wrong was *your* doing
and not some unknown fellow worker's doing.
I watched someone use a competitors league system. The program
required five disks to run on a two drive system. Unlike my
system, that system requires the complete set of bowlers and teams
to be entered and some serious consideration while setting up the
'CONTROL' file. There was no stopping half way and coming back
later. She could not come to grips with the fact that you can not
enter scores if the setup is not done.
Practice on my included imaginary league before starting your own
league. Make two copies of the program data disk before starting
your league; one for practice with the imaginary league and one to
create your own leagues records on.
MAKE BACKUP COPIES!
MAKE BACKUP COPIES!
MAKE BACKUP COPIES!
Disks are cheap compared to time required to re-do everything!
RESTORING to a PAST week's scores:
The system can only restore from the previous week (after you have
said yes to update for new weeks score). You will have to backup
each week's .dbf's in separate archives or copy with unique names
to another disk in order to be able to restore from any week other
than the previous.
This option is to allow you to correct from having said yes to update
from score sheet or accidental wrong team number or bowler number
used.
Use the restore option from the maintenance menu to undo errors and
then input all scores again. Unless a large portion of the scores
have been input and the mistake is small, this is the easiest
method of correction
Restoring rehash
To revive from the normal data.dbf's
1. Use the original weeks LEAGUE disk if you made a copy before
restoring.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 19
2. Use BOWL MAINTENANCE RESTORE option if you updated first (you
can update before the new scores come in; the system will never
allow you to update twice accidentally)
3. At worst you will have to re-input the present week (after using
the BOWL MAINTENANCE RESTORE option).
4. Use Maintenance reindex procedure.

I won't say backup again so just select the required option
carefully.
Add or Edit Bowlers; Teams, etc.
BOWLERS
Straight forward access to all bowlers records.
If you do not know the bowlers number then you can elect to
search by name. On name search you will be able search for
'ICE' to find 'RICE'. This method applies to team searches
also.
Use a space plus number for bowler and team numbers below ten ['
9']. The index system will say bowler or team not found with out
the space if the bowler do exist.
TEAMS
Straight forward access to all teams records.
LANES
Access to any weeks lane date or alley assignments allowed here.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 20
Lane inserts and changes are the most difficult option to do
properly.
When inserting a new position night and redating; the index system
will pop the newer date down. THIS CAN BE VERY CONFUSING. It is
best to do a scratch sheet with pen and paper first then with
great forethought, change the last date first and move up the
schedule (rather than down from the first date change).
(Remember that alley one is the first alley used and the system
will compensate if the leagues starts on alley thirteen for
example.)
Repair all file indexes
This option is a fail-safe measure. A large percentage of any
problem is usually cured via re-indexing. It will not hurt any of
the files and makes sure the index is in accord to the accompanying
file.
Change Score sheet message.
You will always be allowed to change the message before printing out
score sheets. It is difficult to edit the message from the 'Edit
Lane' menu because of line wrap so do it here if need be.
Printer Controls.
Added option for printer testing more than any thing else.
Use an option then print a screen to see effects when testing
changing character sizes.
Lane dater.
Run the lane dater option with the start date of your league.
For a league with position nights use the EDIT LANE option and add
the first position night date in between the existing dates (you
cannot have two records with the same date). Now run LANE DATER
again. Repeat this for each position night needed.
Upgrade BOWL to new version or CONVERTING from public domain.
To convert from an earlier version of BOWL by HGR III Ltd.: Print
screen old syscntl.dbf with your original SWbowl. DOS COPY or
backup all your files onto a separate floppy. DOS COPY the new
version HGRBOWL.EXE into your normal work area and start BOWL.
Example: COPY A:HGRBOWL.EXE C:\BOWL\BOWL.EXE if you have set up
HGRBOWL in 'BOWL' subdirectory on your C: harddrive.
ERROR handling
If BOWL will not run on your computer.
Memory error message.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 21
Do a Dos CHKDSK (See your Dos manual). You must have 516,000 bytes
total memory and a minimum of 400,000 byes free at start up in
order to run the program.
If your hard drive is c:, do C: and then CD\, TYPE config.sys
You should have a FILES=25 and BUFFERS=25 showing on the screen.
If 'file not found' error then you will have to make a config.sys
or copy it from the BOWLING disk: [copy a:config.sys c:\]. If
your config.sys file shows less than 25 for files and buffers
then you only need to edit the file (check your DOS manual).
IF you already had files and buffers expanded and got the above
message then TYPE autoexec.bat from c:\. If your autoexec file
is loading SideKick or other programs you will have to remove
them from the autoexec.bat file or make a special boot disk with
the config.sys file on it. (See your DOS manual).
After adding the config.sys file reboot the computer before
running BOWL.
MOD divide error
Means you have left SEASON_BRK field empty or with a zero in the
BWCNTRL file. If your thirty-third night is a play-off night then
use 33 as a season break.
Can't put in all the team or bowlers scores
1. Check your history file to see if you actually put all of last
weeks scores in. One user had not and after finding the missing
pair of teams and putting in their scores got the usual team
position report and was able to update for the next weeks scores.
2. Check your BWCNTRL file for total team number and bowler numbers.
One case involved changing from 8 to 10 teams midseason. Be
careful when you change the config file to 10 tttms (total teams).
Get your final 8 teams scores in, print the performance sheet, add
your new teams and bowlers and THEN print your score sheets after
change the bwcontrol file to 10 teams and increased number of
bowlers.
If you had 6 teams and you meant to use 8 or more, after putting in
6 teams scores the WKGAMES will show 6 and UPDATE field will show
a zero. Change the UPDATE to a 1 so the system does not ask if
you want to update for the next week.
Weekly lane assignments off.
If the date and assignment line up on the screen but print out of
sequence, reindex. The index has become corrupted.
If you have bowled a couple of nights before this got caught, use
some logic and back date the currant week schedule and advance date
the missed week to come up next. {That's what I am doing right now
for a league I score for and that is why this note is here now.}
A another possibility is that you messed up when adding a position
week. It is easy to do and care and time should be devoted to
check out the schedule after adding a position night.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 22
Bowlers scores missing or records show less games than bowled.
You may have used a bowlers number who did not bowl that week but
credited with the missing games.
Check the history file for the bowler number and see if you used it
twice one week. You will probably find another bowler on that
pair of alleys that week that did not get entered.
Bowler score NOT UPDATED FILE CORRUPTED message:
An indication of a corrupted bowler file index.
You probable did an edit on bowlers file which mysteriously did not
update the index.
Second cause could be from a full disk. Use Dos CHKDSK /F to
inspect the data disk.
CURE: 1st try re-indexing from option menu.
2nd. If indexing does not work, use system maintenance to restore
the SAF files and re-input the week's scores.
BOWLER STARTS and ANOTHER BOWLER FINISHES.
You will HAVE to use the 'edit' method if one bowler bowls one or two
games and another bowler finishes on the same night.
In this case you will have to change the number of games, pins and
average on both bowlers and make sure the handicap difference did
not throw off the team points.

PRINTERS
You can print all options to screen, file or to printer.
All printer conventions hold true for all reports. The TEAM SCORE
SHEETS are the most printer form feed dependant. Be sure the paper
is started with the printer head close to the perforation. Be sure
that the printer knows this is the top of the sheet. One sure way
is to turn the printer off and on again.
Menu operation
The Report menu allow multiple selection of desired printouts. Hit
return to toggle select or deselecting of the option. As the menu
states, you can toggle all options on or off with F3 and F4 keys.
After making selections hit Esc to activate.
Hint: If you just took a look at the menu and did not want to
actually print an options hit F4 to deselect then Esc to leave
the menu.
TEAM pairings weekly sheet
This is an option and does not print unless you request it. The
'lane assignment' option is not as significant if the 'Score
Sheets' are not used.
One of the best liked features by the bowlers. They get their
respective paring sheet and start shadow bowling.
The normal score sheet has room for six bowlers per team. This is
nice if a team has frequent rotation of a six man team for five
bowlers.
If more bowlers are allowed per team, then the least frequent
bowler should be given a '1' in the substitute field. These
extra bowler's stats will show on the weekly performance sheet as
a normal bowler. The team will have to look the handicap up,
replace the name, bowler number and handicap on the score sheet
manually.
If they make a mistake on the bowling night, you will catch it
automatically when inputting the bowlers number. The computer
will correct the mistake.
If the mistake is enough to change the point standings between
the teams then you should be sure to notify both teams of the
mistake.
The optional Long score sheet will print two teams per 8 x 11 inch
sheet of paper and allows about up to nine bowlers per team to be
printed. Saves a lot running around if bowlers frequently rotate.

Both 1st and 2nd options are the same. Selecting the second option
will allow you to print one copy to the printer and one to a text
file entitled WKPF11.TXT (11 is the system week number being
printed) in one operation. You will have to enter a 'P' for
printer and/or 'F' for file and enter to accept the file name
while the team pairings are printing. With a little practice you
will use it as a time saver in order to go for coffee while the
computer and software do the work.
LONGPERFRM option marked T for true in the BWCNTRL file cause the
printout to show one bowler per line with a more complete status
history. If marked F or left empty the printout will print two
columns of bowlers per line showing only the most important
information.
TEAM POSITIONS
Will re-display the team positions and point standings,
You can display to screen, file or to printer.
BACKUP REPORT AND DBF'S (Harddisk only!)
BACKUP uses the encluded LHARC.EXE and LHARC.P files in concuntion
with the report option of printing the performance sheet to disk.
Inorder to work both LHARC files must be accessable to BOWL; either
in the subdirectory or with DOS path command.
Check off the PERFORMANCE option twice from the REPORT menu. Print
one copy of WEEKLY PERFORMANCE SHEET to disk. One to printer and
one to file will create the text file that this option will add to
a .LZH file. Backup will create a zip file with the league name
plus 'txt'.LZH and increase its size each week *if you print
performance sheet to file* with the default name offered. If you
do this three weeks in a row you will have archived three text
files of the Weekly Performance Reports in the one .LZH.
HGR_Bowling League Secretary
page 25
Backup will also create a new .DBF zip for each week called
[leaguename]+weeknumber.LZH. This zip will have the .DBF's for the
week. IMPORTANT! Remember to backup the latest week's .DBF before
extracting from this zip file. TIP: The HISTORY.DBF will be in
each .LZH file. You can delete the older HISTORY.DBF from the
.LZH's to save disk space. You will have to refer to your archive
doc's to learn more about delete and extract from archives.
Backup will exit to DOS with the use of Switch. Switch saves memory to
disk. If you are using floppies you will get an error message. If you
have a harddrive you can put the disk and path into the error screen and
try again. Switch can only be run twice because it is a demo package.
You will have used up one switching with the error message and only get to
ARC one file. You will have to press escape on the second error message.
You then can Quit BOWL and restart BOWL to finish the option.
EXAMPLE Individual sheet
Individual report sheets will be sorted by team number and bowler
number. If a bowler was absent and his number was used, the report
will show that week with out any scores.
Report tip. Print years end Individual sheets to file. Edit out
unwanted bowlers and use DOS PRINT INDIVSHT.TXT to allow use of
computer while printout takes place. Make sure you have plenty of
paper ready.

following weeks performance only highs if better than previous.
This league used nine games before a handicap change! Notice no
change in average the first three weeks (3 x 3 games), and the
big change on the fourth week.
On the sixth week this bowler was absent but his 'absent' format
score was used by the team. That is why the games show a zero.

(Use search;--/replace;-- etc. for non-IBM printers if above
screen is scrambled on printout.)
The above example shows the 'Wide and Calculator' option, both
activated simultaneously. You need to hit Esc twice to get back to
the normal edit mode from this position.
The calculator can be moved about the screen when it is first pulled
up. Just use the arrow keys. Hitting any number or Enter key will
start it working.
The above example shows bowler #68's TTPIN count on the screen and
the divid-by sign which means you could now input the number of
games (9) and hit enter for the answer. 'V' toggles the sign from
plus or minus. 'X' would take you back to the screen you invoked
the calculator from and bring the number with it. If you
accidentally mess up a field you can hit Ctrl U to undo; the
mistake for the present field only.
