Deskpro is an easy-to-use desktop organizer that includes a
handy text editor, cardfile, mailmerge facility, calendar,
clock, and an ASCII reference table.
QUICK START
If you are like most people, you will probably want to run
Deskpro first and read the directions later. Just insert
your distribution diskett in drive A, and type DP.
Throughout the program a help line will appear at the bottom
of the screen.
THE SHAREWARE CONCEPT
Shareware programmers rely soley on the honor system to get
paid for their work. The copy of Deskpro on your
distribution diskett, DP.EXE, is a complete working copy of
the program. If you find Deskpro useful, please send $15
to...

..and thank you for supporting the Shareware concept
You are welcome to make copies of Deskpro and share them
with friends and/or your favorite BBS. And Shareware disk
librarians are invited to distribute Deskpro for the few
dollars per diskett typical in the Shareware marketplace
today. However no one other than the author may claim
rights to the $15 registration.
INSTALLATION
The easiest way to install Deskpro is to simply insert your
diskett in drive A, and run the program from there.

hard disk, set default to that subdirectory, and run the
program from there.

GETTING AROUND IN DESKPRO
A few keys have been set aside to provide easy control of
the Deskpro environment. For example the F1 and F2 keys are
used to change the main menu option at the top of the
screen, and the Escape key is used to "stepback" from a
sub-option or to "Quit" and return to DOS. The line at the
bottom of your screen always contains relevant help
information as to which keys to use.
EDITOR
The first option on the main menu is Deskpro's standard
Editor. You can use the editor to compose letters or
documents, and to print them off on your printer, or save
them to disk for future use. Remember the help line at the
bottom of screen if you need assistance.
The Deskpro editor can be used to edit files created by most
other ASCII editors. Later, in the Mailmerge section, you
will see how you can printoff many copies of a letter, each
automatically addressed to a different person.
CARDFILE
Deskpro has a handy CardFile for keeping names, addresses,
and phone numbers of clients, friends, organization members,
etc. You can store up to 300 cards. Each card also
contains a field called Select String which you can use to
characterize the person with a string or group of strings.
This can be used later to select a sub-set of cards from the
CardFile. You can use the names in the CardFile to
automatically address form letters (discussed later in the
MailMerge section).
MAILMERGE
One of the most powerful features of Deskpro is it's ability
to printoff many copies of the same letter, each copy
addressed to a different person in the CardFile.
In the MailMerge option, Deskpro prompts you for a
Page 3
Letterhead, Date, and Salutation Format, and merges this
information with the body and closing of a letter currently
in the Editor, along with the names and addresses in the
CardFile. The result is the printing of one copy of your
letter for each card in the CardFile, with your letterhead,
the date, the addressee, and the salutation appearing at the
top of each. You can even printoff letters limited to a
selected group of cards in the CardFile by specifying a
Select String for Deskpro to match on each card before
selecting it.
You can also use the MailMerge option to address and
printoff 3-1/2" x 15/16 mailing labels from the CardFile,
using the same Select String facility if you like.
CALENDAR
Deskpro's Calendar option provides a quick look at the year,
six months at a time. You can page forward or backward
using the up or down arrow keys.
CLOCK
The Clock module simply displays the current system time in
large digits. Most machines today have a built-in clock
that keeps time even when the machine is turned off and
turned back on again. You can set the system time at a DOS
prompt by typing the word "TIME".
C> TIME
ASCII
Deskpro includes a handy reference table containing the
hexidecimal, decimal, and screen display characters for the
full 255-character ASCII set. The complete set requires two
screens. You can toggle between screens by pressing the
Enter key.
