I General
The CSCSTOCK program is intended to provide an inexpensive,
easy to use method of keeping track of an investment portfolio.
The program is menu driven, almost self-installing and not copy
protected. A minimum of 384KB of Random Access Memory is re-
quired, along with at least one floppy disk drive. Two floppy
drives or a floppy and a hard disk are preferred.
The CSCSTOCK program is distributed in two methods: via 360K
floppy disk with discreet files and via electronic remote bulle-
tin board systems (RBBS) in the form of an ZIP archive file which
contains all of the files required to install the program. The
use of the RBBS distribution method should in NO WAY be construed
to suggest that the program is anything other than a copyrighted
property of the producer, namely Centurion Software Corporation.
All rights with respect to distribution, sale and modification of
the program reside with Centurion Software Corp. New users may
evaluate the program for up to 30 days without paying any License
fee. After the evaluation period, a License fee of $30.00 must
be sent to the copyright holder. See the next section for a
complete License statement. A Laser Printed copy of the documen-
tation is available for an additional $7.50.
Version supported
This document supports CSCSTOCK version 3.0. The change from
the original release of CSCSTOCK to version 3.0 is the inclusion
of fractional shares, correction of a bug in the RENAME function,
the addition of several edit modes, the ability to send reports
to either the screen or the printer, change from .NTX to .NDX
files for the indexes, support of color monitors, the addition of
account fields in all files, the addition of limited support for
Bonds, Mutual Funds and Limited Partnerships and the change of
the Account Summary Report to the Asset Allocation Report and
other minor enhancements in displays and printouts.
II Evaluation period and License agreement
The CSCSTOCK program is provided to any and all users on a 30
day evaluation basis. The evaluation period begins the first
time the program begins execution and ends 30 calendar days
later. If, after 30 days of use, the user decides to continue to
use the program, a license fee of $30.00 per computer and/or
simultaneous user must be sent to Centurion Software Corporation,
along with the registration form included as Appendix A of this
CSCSTOCK - Copyright 1989 - Centurion Software Corp. - Page 1

document. The payment of the License fee provides a License for
one user to use the program on one computer. Unlimited backup
copies of the program may be made, and copies may be given to
anyone as long as the entire set of files, including this docu-
ment, is passed along with the program. The recipient of such a
set of files incurs the same legal responsibility as the donor
for payment of License fees. Installation of the program on a
multiuser system or making the program available via a computer
network, other than for distribution of the evaluation copy, is
STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Operators of multiuser systems and network
environments should contact Centurion Software Corporation di-
rectly for a multiuser and/or site License. (Rates for these
Licenses are quite reasonable.)
III Installation
There are two different procedures to use for installing the
CSCSTOCK program: One for floppy disk based systems, the other
for systems with hard disks. One additional step must be fol-
lowed if the program was received in the form of an ZIP file.
The files in the ZIP file must be extracted from the ZIP file to
create a standard distribution diskette. This can be done with
PKUNZIP, available on the BBS where you found CSCSTOCK. If you
don't know how to extract files, contact just about any operator
of a remote bulletin board system (RBBS) or a PC users group for
assistance. When the files are extracted, place all of them on a
single floppy disk, creating a standard, distribution diskette.
CONFIG.SYS file change
Whether CSCSTOCK is installed on a hard disk or on a floppy
disk system, DOS must be told to allow extra room for "file
handles" so that CSCSTOCK can open all of the files it needs. If
this is not done, then CSCSTOCK will complain about a "DOS ERROR
4" which simply means that it can't open enough files. To fix
this, enter the following line in a file called CONFIG.SYS that
must be in the ROOT directory of your BOOT disk:
FILES=20
The number to the right of the equal sign (=) must be at
least 20. This change does not take effect until the system is
"booted", so after the file has been changed and saved, press the
CNTL, ALT and DEL keys simultaneously to "boot" the system. The
new CONFIG.SYS file will be read in during the boot process, and
CSCSTOCK will be much happier. While your in the CONFIG.SYS
file, you might want to set one other parameter: BUFFERS.
Setting BUFFERS to 12 or higher will speed up some disk opera-
tions significantly, not just for CSCSTOCK but for other programs
as well. The format of the BUFFERS parameter is:
BUFFERS=12
As with the FILES parameter, this parameter does not take
effect until the next time the system is "booted".

DOS ENRVIRONMENT VARIABLE TO CONTROL MEMORY REQUIREMENTS
With version 2.3 and higher of CSCSTOCK, a new version of the
CLIPPER compiler is in use. This version, while providing better
features and dBASE III compatibility, does require more RAM than
previous versions. The amount of RAM required can be controlled,
to a certain extend, by use of the environment variable CLIPPER.
There are two parameters that can be set in the CLIPPER variable
that can assist in allowing CSCSTOCK to run with limited RAM
available: the size of RAM allocated to the variable name table
and the amount of RAM reserved for "external" programs, executed
by the ! command. The format of the command to set these parame-
ters is:
SET CLIPPER=V###;R###
where the ### is replaced by a number. The recommended value
for V### is V006 (this will free up about 38K of RAM). The value
for R is user selectable: choose the largest value that will
still allow CSCSTOCK to run, if you plan to use external programs
during execution of CSCSTOCK. If you don't plan on using exter-
nal programs, then set this parameter to around 20. So, a typi-
cal line would be:
SET CLIPPER=V006;R020
This command can be placed in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, or in a
BAT file which is used to invoke CSCSTOCK, such as:
echo off
cd \cscstock
set clipper=V006;R020
cscstock
Hard Disk Installation
For installation on a hard disk, the only thing the user must
do is copy the executable program (CSCSTOCK.EXE) to any subdirec-
tory in the DOS PATH. (For information on use of the DOS PATH
environment variable, consult a DOS manual.) The first time the
program is run, it will create the necessary data base and index
files in the appropriate subdirectory. The "default" directory
that the program will use for the data files is "C:\CSCSTOCK".
If you wish to use a different subdirectory and/or a different
disk, you should refer to section IV for information on the
methods available for specifying an alternative location for the
data files.
After the program has been copied onto the hard disk, start
the program by typing CSCSTOCK at the DOS prompt (normally C>)
and pressing the Enter key. The program will display the Centu-
rion Software Corporation copyright notice, then a License agree-
ment. Answer the question at the bottom of the License agree-
ment. Then the program will detect that the data files do not
exist. You will be asked if you want to create the files, and,
CSCSTOCK - Copyright 1989 - Centurion Software Corp. - Page 3
CSC Stock Portfolio Manager
if you say yes, the program will create the files, and then the
program will create the index files (.NDX). If this is success-
ful, the CSCSTOCK Main Menu will then be displayed.
Floppy Disk Installation
Before installing the program on a floppy disk system, it is
highly recommended that the distribution diskette by backed up
(copied) do another disk and that the copy be used for installa-
tion. There is no copy protection on the program, so this is not
a cumbersome task, and is for your own safety. There is nothing
so frustrating as having a set of data files with a lot of histo-
ry in them only to discover that the program itself is unusable
because of a worn floppy.
For installation on a floppy disk, it is recommended that the
program (CSCSTOCK.EXE) be copied onto one floppy, and the data
base files (.DBF's) onto another. Since DOS will adequately
support the use of two floppies on a PC equipped with a single
diskette drive, we suggest that, even if you have only one drive,
that the program diskette be considered the A: disk and the data
disk the B: disk. Once the program is loaded into memory, the
program diskette can be removed and all operation will take place
on the data diskette (no overlays are involved). [Note: future
versions of CSCSTOCK will probably be overlayed, requiring that
the program diskette be in the drive. At that time, a second
floppy or a hard disk will almost be required.]
To use CSCSTOCK in a floppy disk based system, type the
following command at the system prompt (normally A>) and then
press the Enter key:
CSCSTOCK B:
This tells the program to use the B: disk for the data files.
A process very similar to the hard disk installation described
above will then take place, resulting in the creation of all the
necessary data files and index files on the floppy drive. The
same command, CSCSTOCK B:, is used to start the CSCSTOCK system
any time you want to work with your stock portfolio.
IV Specifying an alternative location for data files
If you read the installation process for floppy disk systems,
you probably have already guessed one of the methods of specify-
ing an alternative location for the data files of CSCSTOCK:
enter the disk and/or directory name(s) with the CSCSTOCK com-
mand. The command would look something like:
CSCSTOCK D:\STOCKS
The second method involves use of a DOS environment variable.
During program initialization, CSCSTOCK checks for the existence
of a variable called CSCSTOCK and, if it is present and no disk
and/or directory has been specified with the startup command,
CSCSTOCK - Copyright 1989 - Centurion Software Corp. - Page 4
CSC Stock Portfolio Manager
then the disk and/or directory name contained in the environment
variable will be used for the data files. The advantage of this
is that the directory name can be entered by the autoexec.bat
file. To enter the name of the directory into the environment,
use the DOS SET command. For example:
SET CSCSTOCK=D:\STOCKS
would have the same effect as specifying D:\STOCKS with the
CSCSTOCK command. This can also be done for floppy disk based
systems, such as:
SET CSCSTOCK=B:
Note that a disk and/or directory specified with the CSCSTOCK
command overrides the entry in the environment variable.
V Using the program
Due to the menu-driven nature of the CSCSTOCK program, it
really is quite simple to use. These next few section of this
document will guide the user through the options that appear on
the main menu. The options will be grouped, from left to right
on the main menu. The first section will describe the stock
transactions options: Buy, Sell, Rename, Split, Move. The next
section will deal with the Update Prices option. The third
section to follow will deal with the Other Transactions options:
Dividends and Cash. Then the Miscellaneous options: Select
Account, Edit Operations, Cleanup Data Files and toggle Output
Device. Finally, the reporting options will be covered: the
Portfolio report, the Asset Allocation report, the Yearly summary
the Transactions report and the Cash report.
VI Investment transactions: Buy, Sell, Split and Rename
Use the B (Buy) option to record a investment purchase in the
data base. The program will ask if you are buying more of a
investment that you already own. If you answer Yes, the program
will then prompt for the symbol of the investment. If the in-
vestment is found, the data currently stored will be used to
"fill in the blanks" for the transaction. Then, enter (or cor-
rect) the transaction date that appears in the first field. (The
computer automatically inserts the current date for this field,
so you might need to change it if the investment was actually
purchased several days ago, etc.) Next, enter the company name.
This is a 30 character long alpha-numeric field (you can enter
just about anything you want). This field is not used much, but
it does appear on the screen at various times. The next field is
used to indicate whether the investment transaction is taxable in
the current tax year or tax-deferred (this would apply to a
self-managed IRA, for example). To indicate a tax deferred
transaction, enter a Y for the Non-tax field, otherwise enter an
N.
CSCSTOCK - Copyright 1989 - Centurion Software Corp. - Page 5
CSC Stock Portfolio Manager
The next three fields control how the investment is listed
for various reports and prompts, and how you can refer to the
investment. The SYMBOL field should be used to record the actual
symbol as it appears on the stock exchange. Your broker should
be able to supply this symbol, and it probably appears on the
monthly statement from the broker. The next field, Newspaper
Listing, should be the name of the company as it appears in the
newspaper that you normally use to look up the prices of the
investments. This field, along with the exchange field, will
determine what order the program prompts for the prices of the
investments in the portfolio during the Update Price option.
Also, either of these two fields (SYMBOL and NEWSPAPER LISTING)
may be used to retrieve the investment for later sale, split,
renaming and Dividend collection. The Exchange field is only
used as a prefix for the display order determination during
Update Price operations and for several reports, thus keeping all
investments with the same Exchange designation appearing sequen-
tially, reducing the amount of page flipping in the newspaper.
Now the data for the actual purchase is entered. First the
number of shares must be entered. This number can have up to 4
decimal places, to account for shares purchased by investment
reinvestment plans or employee savings plans. Then enter the
purchase price on a per share basis. Next, the total commission
for the purchase. The next field may be entered now or not.
This field, annual Dividend, is automatically updated during
Dividend collection operations. It is only used as a starting
point for the Dividend collection operation, and is thus not
critical. Last, enter up to 78 characters of notes. Note that
the display on the screen is less than 78 characters, but it will
scroll as the cursor moves from side to side, allowing all 78
characters to be entered. The total amount of the purchase is
automatically deducted from the Cash account.
Use the S (Sell) option to sell a investment that is in the
active data base. Only investments that are indicated as ACTIVE
may be sold. (Actually, an ACTIVE investment is any investment
that has not been sold.) First, the program needs to know what
investment to sell. Enter either the Symbol or the Newspaper
Listing for the investment to be sold. If the program can't find
the investment, it will complain. If it does find it, if will
determine if there are both taxable and non-taxable shares of the
investment. If both types exist, the program will ask if non-
taxable shares are being sold. Enter Y to sell non-taxable
shares, N to sell taxable shares. The program will then deter-
mine the maximum number of shares that can be sold, and display
that number along with the most recently entered price for the
investment and the commission for the purchase on the screen.
Make any adjustments necessary to the numbers. Since there can
be multiple transactions purchasing the same investment, the
program calculates the actual number of shares held.
To process the sale, the program starts with the oldest
transaction (FIFO) and begins selling shares. There are three
separate situations that can arise when the program is selling a
investment: (1) the sale is for less that the number purchased
CSCSTOCK - Copyright 1989 - Centurion Software Corp. - Page 6
CSC Stock Portfolio Manager
in the transaction being considered, (2) the sale is for the
exact number of shares purchased in the transaction being consid-
ered or (3) the sale is for more shares than were purchased in
the transaction being considered (but no more than the total
number of shares still active). If case (1) is used, the trans-
action is split into two, with the accumulated Dividends and the
purchase commission pro-rated between the two transactions. One
of these transactions now falls into the second category, and is
sold normally. If the sale falls into the third category, the
shares of the current transaction are sold normally but the sale
commission is pro-rated by the number of shares, and then the
program looks at the next transaction, and the next if necessary,
until it becomes a category 1 or category 2 transaction. The
total amount of the sale is automatically added to the Cash ac-
count, in accordance with the taxable/not-taxable nature of the
sale.
Use the R option to rename a investment. The renaming could
be because of a merger or just a name change. The program needs
to know the symbol (or newspaper listing) of the investment being
renamed, then the symbol, paper listing, name or exchange may be
changed. All recorded Dividends are changed to reflect the new
symbol (Dividends are tracked by symbol). The Cash transactions
ARE NOT changed, however, since the symbol is only part of the
notes. With release 1.5, all occurences of the same investment
in the transaction file are also renamed, even those investments
which have been sold (and repurchased). A bug in prior versions
resulted in an inconsistency between the Active investment file
and the Investments (transaction) file. In this version of
CSCSTOCK, the Active investment file has been eliminated entire-
ly, and the program uses a special index file to locate active
investments.
Use the / option to split a stock. The split parameters are
entered just the way a stock split is declared. For example, a 2
for 1 split, or a 3 for 2 split, etc. Since shares are tracked
to the ten thousandths of a share, it will probably be necessary
to enter a "sell" tranasction to reflect the fact that most stock
splits automatically sell fractional shares. The current price,
the number of shares and the annual Dividend are all adjusted in
accordance with the split parameters. Note that all previously
sold stock transactions of the same name are also split, result-
ing in a consistent list of stock transactions. Thus if stock A
is bought and sold many times, then splits, all previous transac-
tions will also be split.
Use the M option to move investments between accounts. The
program will prompt for the name of the investment to move. You
may move an individual investment, ALL investments or ACTIVE
investments. The program will also ask for the OLD and NEW
accounts, tax status of the investment, the transfer date and the
amount of CASH to move with the transfer. Investments of the
proper name or category, and the proper tax status, will be moved
from the old account to the new account. Two CASH transactions
will be entered, effecting the cash transfer.

VII Updating the prices of the investments
The Update price option (U) is used to update the prices of
the investments in the active portfolio/account. First, the
program asks which type of investment is being updated, Stock,
Bond, Mutual Fund, Limited Partnership or Other. Highlight the
correct investment type (use the up and down arrow keys) and
press ENTER. A "spreadsheet-like" display will result. To
change the price of an investment, move the highlight to the
price of the investment, and type a new number. End entry of the
number with the ENTER key. The new price is automatically stored
in the file. When all of the prices have been updated, hit the
ESCape key to return to the main menu.
VIII The Other Transactions
The D (collect a Dividend) option is used to record the
receipt of a Dividend for a currently held investment. The
program prompts the user for the investment (use either the
symbol or the paper listing). The current annual Dividend field
is divided by 4 to represent a quarterly Dividend and the program
displays the current quarterly Dividend, both in terms of total
shares and a per share basis. You may enter a new figure in
either place. If a new total is entered, the program will calcu-
late the per share figure, multiply by 4 and record this amount
in the investment data bases. If a per share amount is entered,
a new total amount will be calculated. In either case, the
amount of the Dividend will be recorded in the Dividend data base
and the Cash data base as a deposit. The taxable/non-taxable
nature of the Dividend will be preserved (if both types of in-
vestments are held, two entries will be made in the Cash data
base). The amount of the Dividend will also be recorded in each
transaction currently active.
The C (Cash) transaction allows you to record a deposit or a
withdrawal from the Cash account. Each transaction must have a
date and an indication of whether it is affects the tax deferred
or taxable balance.
IX The Miscellaneous options
CSCSTOCK maintains an "account" field in each of the data-
bases used. Reports can be for ONE account or for ALL acounts.
To specify which account (or to cancel an account specification),
use the # option. A list of currently used accounts will be
displayed. If the account desired is listed, move the highlight
bar to the appropriate entry and press ENTER. If a new account
is being defined, hit the ESCape key; the program will allow an
account name to be entered. The name of the selected account
will be displayed at the top of the main menu. To cancel an
account selection, again use the # key: the program will ask if
you wish to cancel an account selection.
CSCSTOCK - Copyright 1989 - Centurion Software Corp. - Page 8
CSC Stock Portfolio Manager
The Edit operations allow individual records in the Transac-
tions (sold or active investments), Investments (active invest-
ments), Dividends or Cash files to be modified. For the Transac-
tions, Investments and Dividend files, the name of the investment
(symbol or newspaper listing) must be specified and only records
for that investment can be edited. For the Cash file, the pro-
gram moves to the BOTTOM of the file first before editing is
done. For all of these files, a sub-menu of PgUp, PgDn, Change
or eXit will appear. Some of the Edit sub-menus allow a Search
option, to find an record more quickly. The program will allow
the use of the PgUp and PgDn keys to move from record to record
(within a particular symbol for Transactions, Investments and
Dividends, unlimited for Cash). To change any of the data, enter
a 'C' (Change). After the data has been changed, use the X
option to return to the main menu. If an attempt is made to PgDn
or PgUp past the valid records (for Transactions, Investments &
Dividends) or the top or bottom of the file, the message "First
Record" or "Last Record" is displayed and the program remains at
the first or last valid record. Any appropriate calculations are
re-done if numerical data is changed. Note that this option can
not be used to change the name, symbol, paper listing or exchange
of a investment - use the R (Rename) option for these parameters.
The cleanup operation is used to delete batches of data that
are no longer current. The program will ask for two pieces of
information: which file to cleanup and what date to cleanup
through. The files may be Investments (I), Dividends (D), Cash
(C) or All (A). Whichever option is specified, all records which
have a date on or prior to the date specified will be deleted
(for Investments, this means the investment was SOLD on or prior
to the date specified). All deleted records are summarized in
the files so that the numerical data for overall profit/loss is
not lost. In the Investments file, a fictitious investment,
ZZZZZZ, is entered keeping track of the total number of shares
sold with a calculated price per share. In the Dividend file,
two records, both for ZZZZZZ, are added keeping track of taxable
and non-taxable Dividends. Two records are also added to the
Cash file when it is cleaned up.
The O (toggle Output device) option is used to change where
reports are sent: to the screen or the printer. Press the O
option, and the program will switch from the printer to the
screen or vice versa. When attempting to switch from the Screen
to the Printer, the program checks to see if the printer is
ready; if it is NOT, a warning message is displayed and the user
is given the option of fixing the problem or returning to screen
mode output.
X The Report options
There are 5 reports available from CSCSTOCK. All reports may
be sent to either the screen or the printer. When sent to the
screen, reports are formatted for 25 line output; for a printer,
CSCSTOCK - Copyright 1989 - Centurion Software Corp. - Page 9
CSC Stock Portfolio Manager
the format is for 66 lines/page (the program allows space for
margins top & bottom). Use the O option to toggle the output
device.
The Portfolio Report
The Portfolio report lists for each active investment:
newspaper listing,
investment type,
exchange,
current price,
purchase price,
purchase date,
current value,
total gain or loss (including commissions and Dividends),
the percent the total gain or loss is of the purchase and the
annualized gain or loss
Note: for all annualized figures, a year is 365 days.
After the last investment is listed, a one or two line sum-
mary is displayed. The first line is for all investments and, if
there are non-taxable investments, the second line is only for
these non-taxable transactions. The items shown are:
Cash balance
value of the investments
total gain or loss
percent gain or loss
total value of the portfolio (or non-taxable portion)
The Asset Allocation Report
The Asset Allocation Report lists the total value of all
investments, the value of the Cash account and the total value of
the portfolio, with all figures displayed for ALL investments and
Cash and for NON-TAXABLE investments and Cash.
The Yearly Summary
The Yearly summary report will list, for any given calendar
year, all investments that were sold during that year. The
program prompts for the year to be displayed. The detail lines
of the report are the same as for the Transaction Report, de-
scribed next:
symbol (not the paper listing)
exchange
number of shares for the transaction
purchase price
sale price *
purchase date
sale date *
total commission *
total Dividends *
CSCSTOCK - Copyright 1989 - Centurion Software Corp. - Page 10
CSC Stock Portfolio Manager
total income *
% gain or loss *
* For the Transaction report, these fields are only displayed
if the investment has been sold.
After the last transaction, a summary is given, detailing
purchases, sales, profits, Dividends, fees and return, broken
down for total and non-taxable transactions. For Profits, a
taxable figure is also listed. For the Yearly report only, a
single line summary of Dividends is given, reporting total Divi-
dends, non-taxable Dividends and the taxable difference.
The Transaction Report
The Transaction Report is very similar to the Yearly report
with the following exceptions: all investment transactions are
listed, with certain fields not displayed for investments that
have not yet been sold, and the single line Dividend summary
field is omitted.
The Cash Report
The Cash report displays all or part of the transactions in
the Cash file, showing:
date of the transaction
amount (positive for deposits, negative for withdrawals)
description of transaction
A one or two line summary is given showing the total Cash in
the account, for all Cash and for non-tax Cash. After selecting
the cash report option, you will be asked to provide a date range
and select an order: Oldest first or Newest first.
XI Support for Color Monitors
Beginning with version 2.3 of CSCSTOCK, support for color
monitors is being added. The program will detect the use of a
color monitor and use colors in various ways. The main menu will
be white letters on a blue background. In some reports, colors
will be used to indicate transactions which have made or lost
money. On a MONOCHROME monitor, underlines and inverse video
will be used. If you are using a Black & White monitor attached
to a COLOR card (CGA or EGA), the DOS MODE command can be used to
surpress the colors, if they appear hard to read on your screen.
The command "MODE BW80" should be issued before the CSCSTOCK
program is executed, and the use of color should be better. Note
that this is a function of DOS and NOT of CSCSTOCK, so it MIGHT
NOT WORK on all systems. If there is sufficient demand, a "NON
COLOR" indicator can be built into the program.

Hidden Keystrokes
All programs developed by Centurion Software Corporation that
use dBASE III Plus compatible files use the same I/O library.
What this means is that a certain amount of consistency is pro-
vided and certain options, not documented within the body of the
program documentation, are available at many prompts. The pur-
pose of this section is to describe these hidden keystrokes so
that all may make use of them.
In general, these keystrokes work whenever the program is
waiting for a menu selection (or sub-menu selection) or waiting
for a Y/N answer. There are certain exceptions to this caused by
the nature of the prompts themselves. If in doubt, try one of
these. We don't use these prompts for any other purpose, so no
harm will be done.
Keystroke Purpose
Alt-F The sends a form feed to the printer.
Alt-R Issue any DOS command, such as DIR. Care
should be used since it is possible to alter
files currently opened by the program. This
could have disastrous results. After the
conclusion of the command, the screen is
returned to the same state that it was in
before the command was issued. Note that
only a maximum of 100K of RAM is available
for this, so many programs will not in this
"SHELL".
Alt-Q The Q command always brings up the question:
Do you really want to quit? If a YES is
selected, all files are closed, the program
is terminated and the user is returned to
DOS.

CSC Stock Portfolio Manager
Some previous versions of CSCSTOCK did not include space for
fractional shares in any of the data files. This new version
will automatically convert your old files to the new format if
both format files are available. To do this, start the program
in the normal fashion. Then, when the program asks for a loca-
tion for the new format files, enter the disk and/or directory
where the new format files are stored. DO NOT COPY THESE FILES
OVER YOUR OLD FILES, OR YOUR OLD DATA WILL BE LOST. The program
will rename your old files to .BAK, copy the new format to the
default disk/directory, and use the 'append' process to insert
the old records into the new files. The program will NOT erase
the old files. We leave that to you to do, after you have veri-
fied that the conversion has taken place properly. Please note
that if you are running on a floppy disk system, you should not
remove the diskette containing the old format files once this
process has started. (The exception, of course, is if you only
have one floppy disk drive - then follow the prompts on the
screen VERY CAREFULLY about when to swap disks between phantom
drives A and B.
If you are upgrading from a version prior to 2.3 to version
2.3 or higher, then the old .NTX files are no longer required.
The .NTX files can be deleted, and the program will create a new
set of .NDX files, which are completely dBASE III Plus compati-
ble.
