*** WARNING ****
THIS HAS BEEN TESTED VERY THOROUGHLY BUT, AS YOU WILL READ IN THIS
DOCUMENT, IT WAS NOT ORIGINALLY FOR THE PUBLIC MARKET AND CERTAIN
FAIL-SAFES HAVE NOT BEEN PROGRAMMED, SUCH AS ERROR TRAPPING. THIS
PROGRAM HAS NOT CAUSED ANY PROBLEMS ON OUR SYSTEM, BUT IF YOU TYPE
AN INCORRECT SETUP PARAMETER THE SOFTWARE WILL NOT CATCH IT! PLEASE
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND FOLLOW THEM SO YOU DO NOT HARM ANYTHING, AND
ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR DIR.LST AND DLPATH.LST BEFORE MODIFYING THEM!
I. Introduction
PCBCDROM is a utility that will allow you to import a CD-ROM directly
into PCBoard. This was written after spending many hours trying to find
software that would make importing our constantly changing CD file base
in our CD Jukebox, and spending many hours manually importing and setting
up PCBoard to support our new CD-ROMs.
What you get is a utility that scans the CDROM (or any valid directory
for that matter) for a FILES.BBS file, imports and converts that file to
PCBoard directory format, and changes the PCBoard DIR.LST to reflect
the new files, the new directory files and the paths that you just
imported. And, finally, it will create an index file to include in the
search path. The only entry you have to do is type a command line, and
supply creative names for each file area you import.
II. Limitations
At this time the only file format supported is FILES.BBS, and only one
particular flavor of that. Unfortunately there has been no 'standard'
in creating the FILES.BBS, but we used the most common, that is where
each line of the FILES.BBS is formatted:
FILENAME.ZIP File Description
(this version of FILES.BBS begins the description at the 40th column,
if that is not the case you will get very weird imports).
This will also not see multiple line descriptions, so if your FILES.BBS
has more than one line of description it will be ignored (this will be
added to the next upgrade of PCBCDROM, but was too much code to write
at this release and our latest CDROMS did not require it).
III. Inputting the Options (in the order they are asked)
Where to start looking for FILES.BBS. This is a fully
qualified path (without a trailing backslash) of where to begin
searching for FILES.BBS files. This directory and all of its
subdirectories will be searched.
What to start naming the directories sequentially. All imported
directories will be DIRx, where x is the sequential number starting
with this parameter. Each directory imported will increment this
number by one, so if you entered 61 as the start, the program will
create a file called DIR61 through DIRxxx, xxx being the last
directory imported.
What to put in the Uploaded By field in the description,
you can also enter a 0 here to indicate you do not wish to add this
to the description.
Where the DIRx files will be created. This is a fully
qualified path name (no trailing backslash).
Where the DIR.LST you wish to update is. You must use DIR.LST,
if you have used another naming convention you will need to rename
it in order for this to automatically import into PCBoard. This is
normally [drive]:\PCB\GEN if you only have files in the main
conference.
IV. Upcoming Plans for PCBCDROM
Ability to migrate many flavors of FILES.BBS, as well as other formats
used by CD-ROM manufacturers.
Ability to group files into existing file areas. After the first ten
or twelve online CD-ROMS you duplicate a lot of areas!
V. History
January 19, 1996 - Version 1.0
You must be kidding, right!? Uh, this is the FIRST version so no
more needs to be said.
VI. In-Balance Systems and Other Odds-N-Ends
IBS is primarily a networking company in Denver, Colorado. Crystal
Shard BBS is one of the largest in Colorado with over 12GB of files for
download (as you see the need for this program is high for us). We have
several CD-ROM Jukeboxes serving our file base on a Novell server. You
can get updates to this program as well as sending us comments on it by
calling Crystal Shard BBS at (303) 742-4405.
This program was written, tested and compiled in this environment:
MS-DOS 6.22
407K available conventional RAM
A DOS window under Microsoft Windows
(This is provided in case you have a problem, you can determine if it
may be the environment).
As always, the first version of any IBS software is FREEWARE. After
the first version it may or may not become SHAREWARE. Upgrading the
status of this to SHAREWARE will depend on if we begin writing updates
more for you or more for us. The software is always written due to our
needs for our PCBoard system, and in the interum we may distribute it
to the public. Since this version is FREEWARE no registration is
required.
I am Maverick, this is my software, enjoy!
