║Boxer v4.0a║
║Text Editor║
╙───────────╜
by Tony Curro
Several readers and users that I have spoken to use a word processor
to do even the simplest of editing tasks. It is too much of a hassle to
bring up a huge word processor to edit several lines in my AUTOEXEC.BAT or
CONFIG.SYS files. There is also the problem of making sure that the file
is saved as a pure ASCII file, rather than the default of the WP. I always
used a text editor. For years I have used QEDIT. A key word there is
'HAVE,' past tense. I have just discovered Boxer, and was sold
immediately. QEDIT is a very good text editor and has features that you
will find in BOXER. However, BOXER has many more features than can be
found in QEDIT. You can see the above header that I have created. I did
it in several keystrokes with BOXER. First I marked the text for the first
two lines, and then selected the type of box I wanted. Instantly it was
drawn. I did not have to use the arrow keys to draw the lines around the
text. In addition, by then highlighting ALL the lines and pressing Line
Center (CTRL-F8), all three lines were centered as a block. These are
things I could not do with my previous editor.
Boxer has the date and time option on the lower right hand corner of
the screen, so you can always see either the date or time, or alternate
between the two. The menu bar is on the top of the screen with the line
number and column appearing on the lower part. All the menus can be
controlled by mouse or keyboard.
Have you ever accidentally deleted a line or two. Boxer allows you to
UNDO up 200 changes as a default, and you can set it to a larger number if
you wish. It will even allow you to restore an accidentally deleted file
with one keystroke.
Sorting a range of lines alphabetically or numerically in ascending
or descending order, is as easy as blocking a column and selecting sort.
Boxer also makes extensive use of Block Commands. Multiple options are
available on selected blocks of text that include: cut, copy, append,
paste, delete and more. The new version also comes with a Clipboard
Manager, which has 26 individual clipboards for your use. You can cut
several blocks of text into one or several clipboards, and then paste them
to any location or document.
Synchronized Scrolling is another addition to Boxer. This allows you
to open two or more files in adjacent windows, and by turning on scroll
lock, being able to scroll through the windows. Each window is locked to
the other, so scrolling up or down will keep all the text together. This
is very useful for comparing text files.
Word Processing programs usually cost several hundred dollars. Boxer
incorporates many of the features found in high-end word processors at a
fraction of the cost. Things like page numbering, wordwrap, justify,
centering, repagination and more are standard features of Boxer.
For those who are used to a specific editor or WP, Boxer comes with
several key files to emulate popular programs. If you use Brief, Norton
Editor, WordPerfect, WordStar or QEDIT, there is a key file for you. Best
of all you can change these on the fly; no need to use a configuration
program to set it. Or by using the SET command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file,
you can set many defaults of Boxer to be present each time you bring it up.
There are even 10 color sets to choose from, or you can create your own.
There is also the ability to create macros that further simplify your
keystrokes. Built-in the default is also the ability to call up
ShareSpell, a shareware spell checker.
Can't find a file? Boxer can search across you entire disk to present
a list of files matching a supplied pattern in a menu you can then select
from.
For programmers, Boxer supports multiple compilers. It will run the
compiler based on the extension of the file. If an error occurs in a line,
Boxer will show you the error, and place you on that line ready to edit
it.
Other features included are an ASCII chart, and a calendar. Boxer is
DESQview aware, and does work within Windows 3.1.
Pound for pound, and dollar for dollar, Boxer packs a wallop that
knocks out the competition. It is truly 'no contest.' For programmers,
writers, and even students, this program is well worth the price of
admission. Best of all it is shareware, which means you can download it
and try it out before you buy it. I never thought I would switch from the
text editor I was using. After seeing Boxer, I did switch.
