│ Where Is Carmen Sandiego? │
│Educational Game by Broderbund Software │
└────────────────────────────────────────┘
by Tony Curro
The above name is not a complete title. Carmen Sandiego is a series of
adventure games for the entire family. Currently there are six titles in
the series, which are:
WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CARMEN SANDIEGO?
WHERE IN EUROPE IN CARMEN SANDIEGO?
WHERE IN TIME IS CARMEN SANDIEGO?
WHERE IN THE U.S.A. IS CARMEN SANDIEGO?
WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CARMEN SANDIEGO? DELUXE EDITION
(DELUXE requires 640K, VGA, and 6MB of hard disk space)
(Deluxe is also available on CD ROM)
WHERE IN AMERICA'S PAST IN CARMEN SANDIEGO?
Carmen is a villain or villainess. She and a handful of her cohorts go
around stealing different things. You, as a detective for the ACME
Detective Agency, must apprehend her, or whichever of her cronies that did
the deed.
You start out at the scene of the crime. You interview people each
step of the way and can search buildings. While you do not visibly
see the search, it is still enjoying. A person may tell you that the
culprit had red hair, or likes Babe Ruth for example.
You then bring up your trusty computer and KEY in the information.
Then you're presented with a list of possible suspects. If you have enough
information, a warrant's issued to arrest said offender.
At the outset you are given a day and time by which you must
complete your task.
For example in the version TIME, you may be told that the villain
was seen in California panning for Gold; so you would set your travel log
to 1849. Next you can be told that you were at Lincoln's inauguration; so
you now go to 1861, etc. Each one of these games comes with a different
book to aid you. You travel around by looking up the clues and finding the
correct time or place to go. You get Fodors USA GUIDE for the USA edition.
Other include World Almanac, Desk Encyclopedia, etc.
The last two in the series, DELUXE and AMERICA'S PAST have really
been enhanced. Both of these have superb graphics; and if you have an
AdLib, SoundBlaster, or Roland MT-32, you also get sound and special
effects. In the DELUXE edition, if you have a SoundBlaster, you will here
the 'Chief' talking to you, explaining your case. When you KEY into the
computer, you hear the robot asks 'What can I do for you?' I have found
these games located in the Educational section of the software aisles which
to me associates them with students and young children. They are not only
for youngsters. Adults can play along and help their children to learn
history while playing a game, and maybe even the adults will learn a few
things along the way.
The list price for these games is $49.95. DELUXE edition is $79.95.
When shopping in the store you should expect to pay $29.95-39.95; DELUXE
about $45-49, with a street price for the CD ROM version of about $69.
