  11.         SHEZ is a front-end shell, that simplifies the handling of
  12. compressed files.  To use it you must have at least one file compression
  13. program, and a file browser. SHEZ supports PKZIP, PAK, ARJ, LZH or LHA,
  14. PKPAK, and ZOO. If you use the ZIP format, you must have PKZIP.EXE,
  15. PKUNZIP.EXE and ZIP2EXE.EXE. Any of the above that you use, should be in a
  16. directory that is in your path. To view text files you will need a program
  17. like LIST. SHEZ also gives you the option of scanning a compress file for a
  18. virus. If you intend to use this feature, you will also need SCAN.EXE from
  19. McAfee Associates, or Central Point Software's Anti-Virus program. All the
  20. above, with the exception of Central Point's, are available on almost every
  21. BBS.

  23.         The first thing you do is run SHEZCFG.EXE. This program sets up all
  24. the programs and other information that SHEZ will use for its use. You will
  25. need to know which of the compression programs you have and their location.
  26. LIST and Scan are setup in the same fashion.

  28.         Now that you have finished with the configuration program, you are
  29. ready to start SHEZ. When it first runs, you will see a list of compressed
  30. files in the current directory. If no compressed files are present, you
  31. will see a blank window with two dots. Pressing RETURN will take you back a
  32. directory. When you see a list of compressed files, you just highlight one
  33. and press RETURN. Now you will see a list of all the files contained in
  34. that compressed file. Hitting ALT-X at this point will uncompress the
  35. files. If you want to do a virus scan, and have setup the information for
  36. SCAN, hitting ALT-Z at this point would do a virus check on the files.

  39.        When you come across a text file within a compressed file, simply
  40. highlighting it and pressing RETURN will invoke you file browser, and you
  41. can read the file, without having to extract it from the compressed file.

  44.         Some of the features that Jim Derr has added to SHEZ since it's
  45. beginning, are the ability to check the authenticity verification (-AV), of
  46. files compressed with PKZIP. SHEZ also can now handle disks that have
  47. Volume Labels and/or contain sub-directories. You can also list all the
  48. files in a directory by pressing F6. In earlier versions you could only see
  49. compressed files. When in the above mode, if you see a text file, you can
  50. highlight it and press F3, which will place you in view mode, where you can
  51. read the file. Another feature is the ability to create directories. By
  52. bringing up the extract path window (ALT-P), you enter a drive and full
  53. path to where you want the files extracted. If the directory does not
  54. exist, a window will pop up informing you. If you have misspelled the name,
  55. you can hit ESC and start over; or by pressing F10 have the directory
  56. created for you. BBSs sometimes put their advertising in as a header in a
  57. compressed file. With SHEZ you can quickly strip this by hitting CTRL-Z.

  59.         You also can convert from one compression format to another. ALT-V
  60. or CTRL-V will accomplish this task quickly. This saves you time and having
  61. to remember commands for the different compression programs. The new
  62. version allows you to create macros that will further simplify the ease of
  63. the program. Another feature is the addition of Speech Friendly Interface
  64. (SFI), which makes SHEZ more friendly to users with speech synthesizer
  65. boards (thus enabling blind users to read the computer display).

  67.         SHEZ also has FULL on-line help by using F1 anywhere in the program
  68. to tell you what key combination to press. In addition it has drop down
  69. menus that you can access by hitting the forward slash key.

  71.         The most current version, as of this writing, is SHEZ72, which is
  72. available on most BBSs.  SHEZ is shareware by California Software Design
  73. and Jim Derr. Jim is also an ASP member.
