  28. For an old-ish game, it is still surprisingly good.  The graphics 
  29. are certainly great and, what's more, handling the plane is no way 
  30. near as difficult as later games made it.  Well worth having a look 
  31. at; I am sure you'll amazed.

  34. ABRAMS BATTLE TANK by DYNAMIX

  39. This game might be somewhat dated, but when you play it you still 
  40. feel you are inside a tank, and very insecure at that - because 
  41. everyone is shooting at you.  Perhaps it is its very lack of 
  42. sophistication what makes it easy to play; and the experience is 
  43. very direct.

  46. ADVANCED GALACTIC EMPIRE II by TOMAHAWK

  51. If you enjoyed Thunderstrike, then you might like this one, too - 
  52. though it's nowhere near as good.  But it looked good, and it would 
  53. have been if it weren't because the interface was so difficult to 
  54. master.  I hate not being in control, don't you?

  57. AIRBALL by MICRODEAL

  62. Excuse me while indulge in a bit of nostalgia.  Do you remember, 
  63. lads and lasses, the days of the Speccy?  Did you spend hours 
  64. playing the isometric Ultimate games?  Well, here is something very 
  65. similar.  You have to guide a ball in and out of doors, up and down 
  66. stairs, without getting it punctured, and collect a lot of goodies.

  70. ALADDIN by VIRGIN

  72. Arcade Adventure

  75. Gorgeous Disney graphics and animation.  It puts you in mind of 
  76. Prince of Persia and, although not quite as brilliant, it's near 
  77. enough.  If you like this sort of thing, you'll really love this 
  78. product.  If you don't believe me, take a look at the screen!

  81. ALCATRAZ by INFOGRAMES

  83. Shoot'em-up arcade
  84. ------------------

  86. Although this is just one more blood-spilling exercise, it 
  87. nevertheless has its own character.  The game starts with your 
  88. mission being explained to you with the aid of a projector.  That 
  89. helps - normally you are just tossed in and left to flounder about.  
  90. Next, you get on with it and have to fight a lot of people, but at 
  91. least you are able to pick up their weapons, so you have an 
  92. inexhaustible source.  The main thing about this game is that it can 
  93. be played by two people at once, something which should avoid fights 
  94. between friends and siblings.

  97. ALIEN BREED by TEAM 17

  102. This is a very nice product indeed.  You get a guy investigating an 
  103. alien invasion, shooting monsters and picking up useful things, 
  104. above all, keys - which allow you to search more of the area.   I 
  105. know it sounds like you've seen it all before, but this one is 
  106. different, believe me.  It rather reminded me of Dark Spyre.

  109. ALONE IN THE DARK, I and II, by INFOGRAMES

  114. When the first Alone in The Dark came out it caused a furore amongst 
  115. adventure players because it was so unique.  You had this 3-D guy 
  116. you had to manoeuvre and he was horrendously clumsy.  Keeping him 
  117. alive while investigating a spooky house was a major undertaking, 
  118. though once people got used to handling him and making mince meat 
  119. out of the opposition, everyone enjoyed themselves hugely.  It was a 
  120. tough game to solve, too.  Many people felt that Alone in The Dark 
  121. II was a bit over the top, though, since everyone got killed before 
  122. they could even get into the house.  I believe there is an AITD III 
  123. coming up, I wonder what that will be like.

  126. ALTERNATE REALITY - THE CITY by DATASOFT

  131. Lousy graphics and lousy game - you get killed every few seconds, 
  132. before you've had a chance to get to know your surroundings.  They 
  133. don't write games like that any more...thank God!

  136. AMARILLO SLIM by VILLACRESPO

  138. Poker game

  141. Very nice graphics and very strange rules.  Fortunately, if in doubt 
  142. you can always ask the Tutor.  There is extensive help on the screen 
  143. - and you need it, because of the seven different types of poker on 
  144. offer, I only recognised one!   Apart from that, play is direct and 
  145. easy.

  148. AMAZON:  GUARDIANS OF EDEN by ACCESS

  153. Like most Access games, this one features stunning graphics.  You 
  154. have to investigate a mystery (so what's new?) and have to solve 
  155. various puzzles to get on.  The whole thing is treated, 
  156. tongue-in-cheek, like a movie.  It aims to put you in mind of the 
  157. days when kids went to see thrillers at the local theatre on a 
  158. Saturday afternoon.  And, indeed, it is quite as exciting as that.

  161. AMBERSTAR by THALION

  166. Now, me, I'm very fond of a good RPG.  I'm even fonder of brilliant 
  167. graphics and a first person view.  Well, this might be a good 
  168. adventure, but the graphics are painful, even if the are first 
  169. person view.  I find it very difficult to concentrate on the actual 
  170. adventure while my subconscious is going "Tsk, tsk, look at the 
  171. pathetic graphics", if you know what I mean.  On top of that, the 
  172. interface is unnecessarily difficult.

  175. APACHE STRIKE by ACTIVISION

  180. If you thought you'd seen them all, look again.  You are in a 
  181. helicopter, trying to reach a certain location, and you have to 
  182. negotiate all manner of obstacles, and on top of that, people shoot 
  183. at you.  Your surroundings are 3-D and you have to take split-second 
  184. decisions because your obstacles are very solid indeed, so get 
  185. dodging.  A refreshing change in the arcade world.

  188. ARACHNOPHOBIA by DISNEY SOFTWARE

  193. A little bit of nonsense for spider lovers everywhere.  Travel 
  194. around, enter the houses and clear the town of spiders.  Only you are 
  195. not allowed to stomp on them.

  198. ARCADE POOL by TEAM 17

  203. This is a very neat game of something called 8 ball pool.  I'm not 
  204. an expert, so don't ask me what it is - all I can tell you is that 
  205. the graphics and animation are terrific and that you can place your 
  206. cue in all manner of places and see which way your cue ball is going 
  207. to go.  You can play against the computer or against another 
  208. player.  Even if you start not having any idea of how to play you 
  209. soon will; and, what's more, you'll really enjoy it.  The sound 
  210. effects are very realistic and I just loved the round of applause 
  211. when I did well.   It occurred to me, too, that it might be a very 
  212. handy exercise in learning to play real pool and how to hit the 
  213. balls.  For such a compact program, the number of options are 
  214. astonishing.  Also, terribly addictive.

  217. ARE WE THERE YET? by MANLEY ASSOC.

  219. Puzzle solving game
  220. -------------------

  222. This is one of my own personal favourite games.  A family get in the 
  223. car to tour the United States and they play games to pass the time.  
  224. The games are related to the places they visit, although somewhat 
  225. remotely.  There is an enormous variety of puzzles and every time 
  226. you solve one you get a piece to the final one.  The only 
  227. unfortunate thing for us is that the emphasis is heavily American, 
  228. and so some puzzles are hard to solve because we are not familiar 
  229. with their fauna and flora.  Nevertheless, tremendous fun... if you 
  230. like puzzles.  Which I do.  So there.

  233. ARKANOID, I and II, by TAITO

  238. If ever there was an addictive game, this is it.  It's been around 
  239. for ages and, although almost forgotten now, every time you play it 
  240. you get hooked again.  Take it away from me!

  243. ATOMIX by THALION

  245. Puzzle

  247.  
  248. A very nice little puzzle - you have to join atoms to form the 
  249. molecule requested and, for that, you have to manoeuvre them around 
  250. obstacles in the right order.  It sounds easy but it's actually 
  251. quite difficult.  It should keep you entertained for quite a while.
