OCR: {. . continued . } <_ booberry> Peoples' boards that local folks call. I still like boards better, but Internet is more practical. <cool_t_A> I still love ANSI even though it's original purpose is becoming obscure, I realize. <rustY_> I mean, I am on a UNIX shell talking in IRC. The only thing I can see is ASCII. <cool_t_A> I still ponder over why these people who are coming into the scene TODAY (the last few months or so) are deciding to do ANSI rather than uga. I mean, in my time the choice was obvious because ANSI was what my hardware permitted. <rustY_> Yeah, me too. Why start ANSI now? What's the use? Why start a board now? No point. Still, the only think uga is good for is web pages. .. . and web pages are boring. <cool_t_A> But more importantly, the reason I loved to do ANSI was because right when i was done doing an ANSI, I could post it on a bbs or a network and have feedback the next day or possible even earlier. Now, with the internet, you have an even wider audience and even faster feedback! <_ booberry> I decided to do ANSI because I like the way it looks a lot better than VGA. I personally hate downloading an ANSI pack and finding VGAS . <cool_t_A> How long have you been in "the scene" so to speak? <_ booberry> About 1 year and a half. I really suck cause I don't practice much. <rustY_> But whats the point in doing an ANSI at all? . . and yeah, i know what you mean about posting an ANSI. I love that feeling . <rustY_> i like sending my ansis over dcc to get feedback, etc .. I mean, with a lot more of the people in the scene hitting college age, maybe more telnets will come up. But what is the point in them when you can dcc your files and do your conversations live? Even though they are free to connect to. <cool_t_A> If I were going to put up a board again, I'd want to put it on the web. I'd design it to be roughly the same as your average BBS running on one phone line, but with VGA graphics and a teleconference . <rustY_> I dunno. I just never liked VGA, though. I love ANSI. The fact that you take a low-res little block, and make it into a picture. It amazes me still, the quality of stuff. That's what's so great about it. <cool_t_A> Yes. Probably the biggest intrigue about ANSI is the amazement of what one can do with such a limiting medium. <rustY_> VGA - I can always load up QUAKE or something else to see some professional effort better than mine. I mean. . and the resolution of VGA is roughly the same as an oil painting . At which point, you could compare yourself to Davinci or Picasso, and you'll never be better than that. <cool_t_A> Yes. That's another thing. Here in this little "scene," VGA artists aren't really that big a deal because there are always thousands of more talented high-res artists out there in the real world, which makes our vga in this "scene" mean very little. <rustY_> Exactly. And that's what made art boards so grand .. the fact that people would devote a whole BBS to furthering the cause of ANSI, this low-res thing. <cool_t_A> However, ANSI in this scene has more meaning because we are making the best "ansi art" in this scene. .. . . in the world. <rustY_> Exactly. You can't compete in VGA cause there will always be someone better, no matter what. <cool_t_A> Ofcourse, the same will be true with any medium, even with ANSI; but not to nearly such a degree as with high res artwork. I do see your point. <rustY_> It was rebellious - this ANSI code, designed for low level communication, was turned into an art form. <cool_t_A> And yet, if you ask the average person on the street what ANSI is, 10 out of 10 will most likely have no clue what you're talking about. The curse of the ansi artist. <rustY_> Because the only ANSI in the world is in the scene - ANSI "art," anyhow . But that's what makes it so great, too. Somewhow. .. that is so cool. It's underground. <cool_t_A> Yeah. Ofcourse, you ask yourself whether it's underground because we want it to be "secretive" or is it underground because nobody out there gives a shit? { laugh} Rusty, Cool T, Booberry (Recorded in IRC on December 14, 1996) 0 -
