OCR: ANSI past. a special round ANSI present. table discussion ANSI future? rusty . cool t . booberry { Shortly after the discussion began. . . } <cool_t_A> It would be nice to see a long "colly" of all(or most) of the acid logos released in acquisitions dating back to 90. <rustY_> I had the first acid pack once. It was neat. Some people say it was funny, but I say for back then, it was probably revolutionary. So I don't think it was funny. Back then it probably rocked. <cool_t_A> Yes. I was drawing ansis when it first came out .. and Acid at that time was without any doubt #1 .. very hot shit for that time. Nowadays, nearly all of the ansis from the original acquisition are a joke compared to today's work. <rustY_> How long have you been around? <cool_t_A> How long? Long enough. {laugh} <rustY_> No, really! I want to know what (if any) groups there were before AAA. {grin} <cool_t_A> Hhm. . Well, I don't know when AAA was founded. I started my ANSI group in 1990. I believe AAA was atleast as early as 89. If I had a copy of the original acid acquistion, today, I could pick out all of Rad Man's ripoffs for ya. <rustY_> Rad Man ripped ansis :) ? <cool_t_A> Yep. When he came to the realization that he sucked at drawing ANSIs, he ripped them. . then eventually stopped altogether. All the ripoffs in the acqusition were from pd artists, too. Michael Arnett, Dave Hartmann, and George Ramos. <rustY_> {laugh} PD artists ... guys who did ansi for no purpose. Was there a group before AAA named 'cat' or something like that? Before they realized they were 'Ace Ansi Artists' there had to be other groups . <cool_t_A> Oh, I'm sure there were a few groups in the mid-80's. I know there was one called AnsiNation that was probably around as early as 88/89 or so. <rustY_> Cool. AnsiNation. I wish I was around back when it all came about - 1990 or so. <cool_t_A> Well, you know .. "elite ansi artists" were considered so because they generally drew ansis in exchange for leech access on warez boards. Even if not in trade, they'd be doing their ansis for warez boards and not some lameass wildcat board in hicktown, ohio. <rustY_> {snicker} Sort of like how you were considered elite cause you actually get validated to certain boards. I think "eliteness" is a term/idea that has died over the last 2 years. <cool_t_A> Yeah. It had to do with getting validated on the good warez boards, and in many cases warez was called "elite software.' instead of "pirated software." It's kind of silly when you think about it. Using the word "elite" as if it was synonymous for the word "pirate" when the true meaning is irrelevant to "warez." <rustY_> If the stuff in Acdu0990 was as bare-bones basic as it was, I wonder what the work *before* it looked like! <cool_t_A> Well. . I remember when you just DIDN'T see any ANSIs more than 25 lines long. They just didn't exist even though people, I suppose, could have used the copy command in dos. <rustY_> Because there were no editors that supported more than that, eh? Then the scene adopted the mantra of 'longer is better' for a few years . <cool_t_A> Exactly. I started out drawing with The Draw when it only supported 25 lines max. It was a big deal when the 50-line version came out and we all started drawing 50 line ansis. <rusty_> But they were just like simple pics and 50 line fonts? When did stuff start getting close to what resembles today's stuff? . . stuff like Marshall Law? .. 91 .. 92? I've only been around doing this stuff since november 94. I'm real upset that the 215 ara code (after about a year of activity) is now totally dead. I wish I could revive it. I am going to try. It's more fun (the scene) when you have a local scene, too. <cool_t_A> Well, Marshal Law(the Picasso of the ANSI Golden Age) was drawing some stuff pretty close to today's stuff .. back in 91. Now that the internet is so easily available to everyone, it seems that bbses in general are slowly dying. {continued . . } 18
