UNIX System Administration Handbook CD-ROM
Harvested in October, 1997
This CD-ROM is a companion to the second edition of the UNIX System
Administration Handbook by Evi Nemeth, Garth Snyder, Scott Seebass,
and Trent R. Hein (published by Prentice Hall). It contains a variety
of freely-available software, tools, standards, and examples. Many of
these packages are referred to in the book, but others have been
included for your use and convenience as a system administrator.
The CD-ROM is written in the ISO-9660 format and can be mounted on
all six of the example systems we use throughout the book: Solaris,
HP-UX, IRIX, SunOS, OSF/1, and BSDI. The software has been harvested
from a variety of sources, including the Internet, Usenet news
archives, and our own labs.
We have not tested each package on all six of the example systems,
and we make no warranties whatsoever as to the usability, fitness for
a particular purpose, or integrity of the packages contained on this
CD-ROM. Compile, install, and use the packages on this CD-ROM at your
own risk (i.e., don't mail us if it doesn't work in your particular
environment, or if it doesn't work at all).
In an effort to maximize the usefulness of the software contained
here, many of the packages have been pruned to contain only the most
recent version, or in some cases, pruned to only the most essential
files. Wherever possible, pertinent documentation is included with
the package. To help you locate useful tools, the "index" directory
contains an annotated description for each of the major packages.
Despite the disclaimers above, there *is* a wealth of fantastic system
administration software (and many other UNIX tools) on this disk. We
encourage you to explore the disk and adapt the software to your
environment. You can mail comments about the CD-ROM to
sa-cdrom@cs.colorado.edu.
A million thanks to Jim Lane <lane@cs.colorado.edu> for assembling
the contents and index of this CD-ROM.
Happy Administrating!
