INDEX ENTRY FOR NOV:
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Name: NOV - Newsgroup overview database
Version: the only separate release - nov has now been integrated into most
existing news transports and news readers.
Author(s): Geoff Collyer <geoff@bell-labs.com>
Geoff Collyer
Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies, Murray Hill, NJ 07974
On the CD-ROM in: news/nov.tar
Ftp source: ftp.std.com:/src/news/nov.dist.tar.gz
Size on the CD: 193 KB (uncompressed)
Description:
Every new newsreader seems to come with a
requirement for a private database of tens of
megabytes of article headers. Some of these data-
base maintenance programs are inordinately costly
to run. We present the design and rationale of a
newsreader database that is sharable by multiple
newsreaders and relatively cheap to maintain.
-- Quoted from doc/rationale by Geoff Collyer in the nov distribution.
Advertised architectures: None specified because there are no particular
architecture dependencies.
Prerequisites: C Compiler, gawk or nawk (possibly awk)
