This prototype application, Gita, is very incomplete, but is perhaps sufficient to illustrate the sort of things that can be done fairly simply with the NeXT to support teaching such subjects as the Bhagavad Gita, one of the classical religious texts of India.
There are several problems that should be noted. First, not all of the sounds work. This is because many of the sounds (most of which provide pronunciation of the terms in the two glossaries) were recorded at CD quality, and were thus too big to distribute easily (i.e., they
wouldn't fit on a floppy). I've provided some sounds recorded at 8kH. These will work only if they are placed in the /LocalLibrary/Sounds directory. The sounds for the Sanskrit terms glossary are provided, but those for the Proper Names are lacking, as are several other sounds that were originally incorporated into the program. Enough remains to give you the basic idea, however. To hear a term pronounced, click on it.
As you will see, this is only a prototype. Only the first verses of Chapter Four of the Bhagavad Gita are commented upon, and only the text of this chapter is given. The Bhagavad Gita has eighteen chapters total, so much remains to be done. I'd also like to include the Sanskrit text.
Also, on the "Avatars of Vishnu" panel, only the avatars of the Boar and Buddha/Kalkin are connected with comments and images.
On more problem worth mentioning. This program was put together before the change from "Request" to "Services" in the menu (i.e., it was written under 1.0). I haven't had time to update this, so it can cause problems (i.e., sometimes, after searching a term in either Websters or Digital Librarian, the program crashes).
