Q: How can I run a LaserWriter from the NeXT machine?\

A: The standard /etc/printcap file supports four classes of entries: a NeXT printer accessed locally, or on the net, and a LaserWriter on a serial port or on the net. Of course the print server host must have the long form for the printer that is hooked up to it in its printcap files.\
\
The comments within the file discuss protections, spool directory, and the location of the PostScript filters. \
\
After installing the right version of this file (must be root), use the Printer application to select the printer you wish to spool to. Sometimes the lpd daemon must be restarted, or machines rebooted before it all works.\
\
To see if the connection to the printer is physically sound, from a Terminal type tip a9600 to get out on serial port a then type ^T (that's control T). This should cause the printer to send a status message. \
\
NOTE that you need an LW+, an LW-II, or an LW with ROMs installed since the newer LWs have been sold. (I.e., an LW with very old ROMs won't work; they need ROMs V47 or better.)\
\
The cable to use is a standard Macintosh Printer cable.\
\
Note also that the IBM Personal Page Printer II, Model 031 works (other models do NOT work). The standard Mac printer cable and Laserwriter Laserwriter printcap entry suffice.
