NameThatFunction is a game that gives students practice in thinking of functions as mappings. Two number lines are shown–one for the domain and one for the range. As the student moves a pointer along the domain number line, the corresponding function value is shown moving along the range number line. The student examines a function as a mapping in this way and then tries to choose the correct formula for the function from a given list. Several different lists of possible functions can be chosen to make the game suitable for students at different levels.
The student can also type in functions other than the ones supplied and use the number lines to study their actions as mappings.
NameThatFunction is used for individual student exploration at Allegheny College.
