Students can learn the nomenclature of inorganic compounds using NameThatCompound. In a game format, students pick a category of compounds and supply either a name or formula for a compound chosen randomly from the category. The application indicates what parts of the student's response are correct and incorrect. The application also keeps a record of the session that can be printed for later study. Rules for naming compounds are available in a separate panel. Hundreds of examples are available.
NameThatCompound is used in the introductory chemistry courses at Allegheny College.
This application was developed under NeXTstep release 2.0.
In the NameThatCompound.app folder are seven files, set0.dat through set6.dat, that provide the information for the compound formulas and names used in the application. Any or all of these can be easily modified to suit an instructor's needs.
