  4. Coming October 1997 everywhere computer games are sold.
  5.  
  6. Defiance requires Microsoft DirectX 3.0 or greater. If you do not have DirectX
  7. installed on your computer, you will need to download it in order to play the
  8. Defiance demo. You can find DirectX 5.0 download at the following address:

  12. Note: The game has been pre-configured for a median "gamma" setting. If you
  13. find the game too dark or too light, change the gamma setting by clicking on
  14. the video button in the startup panel. Your configuration settings will be
  15. saved for future game sessions.

  53. *** If the point of view keeps pointing down to the floor, even
  54. after adjustment, please hit the "esc" key, click on the controls
  55. button and select default. This should correct the problem.
  56.  
  57. *** If you run the game and it comes up with a black screen
  58. It's probable that your video card does not support the 
  59. currently selected mode.
  60. 1.  Double click on the 640X480.bat, this will launch the
  61.     game at 640 X 480 resolution.
  62. 2.  Delete the Defiance.cfg file and restart the game.
  63.  
  64. *** If you find your ship spinning uncontrollably.
  65. Your joystick is not properly setup in windows. To set it up...
  66. 1.  Double click on 'My Computer'
  67. 2.  Double click on 'Control Panel'
  68. 3.  Double click on 'Joystick' (or 'Game Controllers')
  69. 4.  Set 'Joystick selection' to the joystick you have connected or to (none).
  70. 5.  Click on 'Calibrate' and follow the directions.
  71. 6.  Click on 'OK'
  72. Your ship should no longer be spinning.

  74. *** Improving Performance on slower machines.
  75. Each of these will speed up the game.  It's recommended that you 
  76. try them in order and only do as many as are required to make the 
  77. game perform acceptably.

  79.     From the Video dialog change your Screen Size (making
  80.            it smaller will make the game go faster).
  81.     From the Sound dialog turn 'Stereo' to 'Off'.
  82.     From the Sound dialog turn 'Mixing' to 'Faster'.
  83.     From the Sound dialog turn the music volume all the 
  84.            way down.  This will stop the music from streaming.
  85.     From the Sound dialog turn the sound volume all the 
  86.            way down.  This will avoid the overhead of mixing 
  87.            and playing sounds.
