FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks
============================================================
FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks 3.0 is subject to the terms
detailed in the license agreement accompanying it.
============================================================
Installation Instructions
============================================================
Version 3.0 is being distributed as both a 16-bit
Windows program and a 32-bit Windows program.
If you are running Windows 3.1x or WFW, you MUST use
the 16-bit Smart Bookmarks even if you have Win32s
installed. If you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT,
use the 32-bit Smart Bookmarks. To run the 32-bit Smart
Bookmarks, you MUST have a 32-bit TCP/IP stack. Both
Windows 95 and Windows NT provide 32-bit TCP/IP stacks
that you can setup.
To obtain a copy of FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks, first
download one of the self-extracting executable files
into a temporary directory.
for 16-bit : sb1630.exe
for 32-bit : sb3230.exe
Double click the filename to begin installation.
* Refer to the "Handling Existing Smart Catalogs" section
below for information on how setup handles catalogs from
previous releases.
* 32-bit Smart Bookmarks includes a new tool, Smart
Ticker. Ensure that Smart Bookmarks is run prior to
starting Smart Ticker for the first time.
* For more information about this release, please read the
on-line release notes under "Help -> Release Notes".
============================================================
Smart Bookmarks Upgrades
============================================================
IMPORTANT!
When uninstalling your previous Smart Bookmarks instal-
lation, you must reboot your computer to complete the
uninstall routine before you proceed with installing
Smart Bookmarks 3.0.
============================================================
Win32s
============================================================
For Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, and Windows for Workgroups
users:
32-bit Smart Bookmarks does not run on Win32s.
============================================================
Windows NT
============================================================
For Windows NT 3.51:
32-bit Smart Bookmarks does not run with the Windows NT
3.51 preview shell.
For Windows NT 4.0:
Smart Ticker is only supported on NT 4.0.
============================================================
Browsers
============================================================
16-Bit Smart Bookmarks supports the following browsers:
Netscape 2.0 or later
Netscape 1.2
Internet Explorer 2.0
Internet Explorer 2.1 (see note in Known Problems)
32-bit Smart Bookmarks supports the following browsers:
Netscape 2.0 or later
Netscape 1.2
Internet Explorer 2.0 and 3.0
Note: Smart Bookmarks does not support Internet
Explorer for Windows NT Version 2.0 on NT 3.51.
============================================================
Windows StartUp Group
============================================================
Setup installs a Task Monitor and a Task Bar Extension
(32-bit only) into the Windows StartUp folder. If the
StartUp folder doesn't exist, setup will create it in the
standard location.
If you have relocated your StartUp folder, or are using a
version of Windows that uses a non-standard location for
this folder, you will need to move these items from the
newly created StartUp folder to the non-standard folder.
You should reboot your computer after completing this
task.
============================================================
Running FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks
============================================================
What do I need to run FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks?
You must be running a TCP/IP based Internet connection
before you can use FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks. The ability
to send and receive e-mail does not necessarily mean you
can run Smart Bookmarks. There are three requirements for
Smart Bookmarks:
1. A direct Ethernet connection to the net, or a
dialup SLIP or PPP account from an Internet service
provider.
2. TCP/IP stack
3. FirstFloor Smart Bookmarks software
You can get a direct connection to the Internet through a
service provider in your area. You will need to get a
SLIP or a PPP account from an Internet provider (for a
dialup account).
When you have full Internet connectivity, you need to have
a TCP/IP stack, dialer, and WINSOCK.DLL or WSOCK32.DLL
file.
If you get the error message "Cannot find WINSOCK.DLL" or
similar message for WSOCK32.DLL when running FirstFloor
Smart Bookmarks, this means your computer cannot locate
the WINSOCK.DLL or WSOCK32.DLL file that is part of a
winsock package. You probably need to provide the path to
that package.
============================================================
Handling Existing Smart Catalogs
============================================================
* Using Your Smart Bookmarks 2.0/2.02 Catalog
You can choose to migrate your old catalog into the new
Smart Bookmarks 3.0 catalog directory during instal-
lation. If you choose to use your old catalog, Smart
Bookmarks will COPY your old catalog into the new
location. Your old catalog will remain unaffected by
this copy operation.
============================================================
Uninstalling Smart Bookmarks
============================================================
Smart Bookmarks 3.0 for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95/NT
should be uninstalled by running the "Remove FirstFloor
Smart Bookmarks" utility from the Smart Bookmarks
program group.
IMPORTANT!
You must reboot your computer to complete the uninstall
routine.
* Uninstall Does Not Destroy Catalog Data
The uninstall routine does not destroy existing catalog
data. If you want to remove the old catalog, you must
do so manually.
* During the uninstall you may receive the message:
"System indicates the following shared file is no longer
used by any programs. C:\...\FFSPY21.dll If any
programs are still using this file and it is removed,
those programs may not function. Are you sure you want
to remove the shared file? YES/NO."
This is a safety check for the existence of Smart
Bookmarks, Smart Publisher or Smart Subscriber instal-
lations still using this shared file. Answer YES, if
you do not have any other installations of Smart
Bookmarks, Smart Publisher or Smart Subscriber on your
system. Answer NO, if other installations exist.
============================================================
Known Problems
============================================================
* Please see the Release Notes for a complete listing of
known problems and for additional instructions and
issues about this software.
Here are a few things of which you should be aware in this
release:
* Trumpet Winsock for Windows 3.1x users may receive the
following error message:
"WSAEINPROGRESS (#) BY FFSMRT16"
The workaround for this is to add the following line to
the [Internet] section of the ffclient.ini file stored
in your Windows directory:
MaxAsyncConnections=1
* PC NFS-Pro (2.0 or above) users may experience unstable
behavior caused by the number of asynchronous
connections permitted by their TCP/IP stack.
The workaround for Windows 3.1x users is to add the
following line to the [Internet] section of the
ffclient.ini file stored in your Windows directory:
MaxAsyncConnections=1
* The following error message may display in 16-bit
Internet Explorer 2.1 when you try to open a localized
page from Smart Bookmarks:
"The attempt to load ffcache:http://www.firstfloor.com/
failed".
* Certain Monitor Me and Import buttons are not supported
in 32-bit Internet Explorer 2.0.
* If the program crashes, information about newly
localized URLs may be lost. This information will be
recovered at local agent startup.
* We have noted problems with Spry's Internet-In-A-Box
protocol stack version 4.00.01.19.
* Large caches and/or large numbers of bookmarks in Agent
Results can cause delays in starting or exiting the
program.
* Opening URLs using HTML frames while View Smart Folders
or View Agent Results is in use from within Netscape
Navigator 2.0 causes a Java script error. You can still
view URLs using HTML frames by opening them from within
Smart Bookmarks instead of from within the enhanced
browser menu.
* Smart Bookmarks for Windows 95/NT will not display
Agent icons in the left margin of the Smart Window pane
under Small Icon mode. But, in the case of a window
wide enough to display multiple entries on a single
line, any appropriate agent icons are displayed to the
left of the respective entry, except the left-most.
Agent icons indicate a bookmark is monitored by an
agent. This condition has no effect on monitoring
status and does not affect other display modes in the
pane.
* In the Agent Results View, performance with large
numbers of results will be slower if you group icons by
Agent or Parent.
* Web Searches against OpenText do not return results
when Smart Bookmarks is configured for use with
Microsoft Internet Explorer.
* Smart Bookmarks for Windows 3.1x users may be required
to re-enter realm and password information after
upgrading to this release.
* Exiting while Smart Bookmarks is maximized causes it to
front and maximize at the next start-up event if Load
with Browser is enabled. To clear this state, simply
resize the window before exiting the application.
* Only HTTP URLs can be monitored by this application.
* Smart Bookmarks for Windows 3.1x may crash at winsock
@ '1:162a' during updates with Microsoft's TCP/IP
v3.11b in Windows for Workgroups 3.11. This stems from
a bug in winsock.dll and occurs when the local HOSTS
file contains both the Smart Bookmarks address and
fully-qualified host name of an URL being updated. The
workaround is to remove the entry from the local HOSTS
file and add it to the local DNS.
* Smart Bookmarks for Windows 3.1x may display the
following error when auto-loaded with Internet Explorer
2.0 and numerous Agent Results items are present:
"This program does not support the protocol for
accessing http://url"
The workaround is to delete the Agent Results items and
retry the auto-load operation.* If you have run Smart
Catalog Maintenance and it reports your catalog is free
of errors, and Smart Bookmarks still reports errors in
your catalog, please contact FirstFloor Support.
* On some systems with very slow displays, Smart Ticker
scrolling can consume nearly all the CPU cycles. If
you can access the properties dialogs, turn the
scrolling off and continue in non-scroll mode. To
access the properties dialog:
1) Click on the FirstFloor button at the left of the
marquee.
2) Select Preferences.
3) Click on the Marquee Display tab.
4) In the Display Properties section, click on the
Scrolling Rate drop-down list arrow.
5) Click None
6) Click OK.
If further improvement is required, hand edit the
registry setting to manually turn off the scrolling.
First, close the Smart Ticker. Then make a backup of
Windows\System.dat and Windows\User.dat. Run
REGEDIT.EXE from the Windows 95 Start | Run menu, then
expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | First Floor |
ffnotifier folders. Select "ScrollSpeed" and choose
Edit | Modify and change the value to 3. Press OK and
exit REGEDIT. Restart Smart Ticker.
* If running Smart Ticker on NT 3.51, do not try to
create a shortcut or try to disable the ticker by
turning off the Marquee. There is no UI to turn it
back on, since NT 3.51 doesn't have a small icon to
launch the preference dialogs to reinstate the Marquee.
* If Smart Ticker is started while a large number of
Smart Delivery agents or a large number of monitored
bookmarks are being updated, Smart Ticker will be
required to wait for that update process to complete.
In some cases, Windows will allocate large amounts of
System Resources (typically "user memory"), resulting
in a low-resources message from Windows. If this
occurs, use the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys to access the Close
Program screeen, then close the Smart Ticker task.
Once the update process completes, Smart Ticker can be
restarted with no further problems.
If the updating of scheduled agents is completed before
Smart Ticker is started, this problem never occurs.
