  31. WHAT IS NEUTRON?
  32. ----------------

  34. Neutron is an application that plays 3D animations in real-time
  35. over the Internet.  High-quality animations are made possible by
  36. using the power of your machine to render the animation, instead
  37. of sending all the video information over the net.  Once you
  38. have the artwork stored on your machine, it can be used over and
  39. over in different animations.

  41. Animations are linked within a web page.  Clicking on the icon
  42. starts the Neutron viewer which then plays the animation.
  43.  
  44. Neutron is part of the Atomic-3D suite of applications.  You can
  45. use Proton (another part of the suite) to create your own
  46. animations and distribute them on the Web.

  52. This is a beta release of Neutron.  If you find any bugs,

  58.     - What kind of computer (Pentium or 486? How fast?)
  59.     - What video card is installed
  60.     - How much RAM you have
  61.     - What you were doing when the problem occurred
  62.     - The exact error message if one is displayed

  65. your experience with Neutron will be a good one.  Please
  66. check our web site for the most recent (free) bug fixes

  70. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  73. Neutron requires the following system components to operate:
  74.  
  75.     - Microsoft Windows 95
  76.     - 16 megs of RAM
  77.     - A video card with at least 1 meg of RAM, capable of
  78.           displaying at least 640x480 resolution in High-color 
  79.       (16-bit) mode.
  80.     - A Windows-compatible 16-bit sound card
  81.     - 8 megs free hard-drive space
  82.  
  83. To view animations over the Internet, you need:
  84.  
  85.     - 14.4k or better modem
  86.     - TCP/IP Internet connection (PPP, SLIP, etc.)
  87.  
  88. In addition, the following are recommended for best performance:

  90.     - 28.8K modem    
  91.     - A Pentium-class computer, 100Mhz or better;
  92.       NOTE: 586 chips often run slower than a Pentium.
  93.     - 2D Windows acceleration on the video card

  106. CONFIGURING OTHER WEB BROWSERS

  109. The Neutron installation procedure automatically configures
  110. Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer to start
  111. the Neutron viewer whenever you click on an Atomic3D feature
  112. on a web page.  However, if you are running a different web
  113. browser, you will need the following information to configure
  114. it.
  115.  
  116. Please consult the help files or documentation that came with
  117. your browser for information on configuring a new MIME type.
  118.  
  119. METHOD 1:
  120. 1. Click on the animation
  121. 2. If the browser asks you what to do with the file, answer
  122.    that you would like to open it with a program.
  123. 3. Locate NEUTRON.EXE in the directory you installed Neutron
  124.    (typically \Program Files\Atomic3D\Neutron\Neutron.EXE)
  125. 4. Make sure the browser stores this information for future
  126.    reference.

  128. METHOD 2:
  129. 1. Add a new MIME type to your browser (often found under
  130.    an "Options" menu choice).
  131. 2. The TYPE is "video"; the SUBTYPE (or minor type) is
  132.    "x-atomic3d-feature".  If your browser asks for the
  133.    combined type, it is "video/x-atomic3d-feature".
  134.    The file extension is "FMF" (for Feature Master File).
  135. 3. Associate the NEUTRON.EXE program with the MIME type.
  136.    If a "Browse" button is avaiable, locate NEUTRON.EXE in 
  137.    the directory you installed Neutron (typically
  138.    \Program Files\Atomic3D\Neutron\Neutron.EXE).  If not,
  139.    type in the full path to the program.
