  6. MM:GIF is a Multimedia GIF Player.  The GIF file specification has
  7. been enhanced to add MIDI and Digital Sound Files in an application
  8. extension.  MM:GIF will perform these enhanced GIF files.

  15. INSTALLATION
  16.  
  17. To install MM:GIF, choose the Program manager, File/Run... and enter
  18. the directory or Diskette containing the installation files followed by
  19. "setup".

  26. EMBED.EXE
  27.  
  28. Embed creates multimedia GIF files which can be played by MM:GIF.  This
  29. new version has many enhancements.

  31. Creating MMGIF files
  32.  
  33. Enclosed is a DOS program: EMBED.EXE; it is installed in the MM-GIF 
  34. directory.  Using this utility and a script file, you cn assemble your own 
  35. MMGIF files.  See the attached Windows Help file EMBED.HLP (installed along
  36. with MM:GIF) for an example of how a script is configured.  If you've ever 
  37. messed with Windows .INI files, it should look familiar.

  40. MPCABLE DRIVER
  41.  
  42. For those without a MIDI device -- You can use the MIDI Patch Cable driver
  43. to attach MM:GIF to an empty "virtual" MIDI Cable.  This will allow you
  44. to use MM:GIF or any other MIDI application which requires a MIDI device.
  45. You simply connect one end of the MPCable Driver to MM:GIF, and the other
  46. end to nothing.

  48. MIDI Patch Cable is used to connect Windows MIDI Applications outputs to 
  49. other Applications inputs.  The data stream is passed directly from 
  50. output to input -- Example:

  52.  [Sequencer] -> [Out -> MIDI Patch -> In] -> [MIDIMon]

  56.  [MIDI Keyboard] -> [MIDIMon] -> [Out -> MIDI Patch -> In] -> [Sequencer]

  58. You may install the MIDI Patch Cable via the Control Panel Drivers Applet.
  59. "Add..." to Drivers an "Unlisted or Updated Driver", and then type the path
  60. name of the MM:GIF directory (C:\MM-GIF is the default).  Drivers will then
  61. offer to install the "Jamie O'Connell - MIDI Patch Cable Driver", go ahead
  62. and say OK.  If you DO use this thing as an actual patch cable, make sure 
  63. to avoid MIDI Loops or Feedback: i.e. Do not connect the output to input 
  64. within the same application -- it will cause the system to hang.  MIDI 
  65. Patch cable will support multiple opens: you can send one output stream
  66. to several MIDI Apps.

  83. MM:GIF and EMBED are supported solely within the Sight And Sound Forum 
  84. on CIS (GO SSFORUM).  MM-GIF may be distributed, provided only a nominal fee 
  85. (typically to cover packaging costs) is charged for distribution. As
  86. such, it may be distributed with other software.  If more than a nominal 
  87. amount is charged for the entire software package, that constitutes
  88. commercial distribution and you should contact the author, Jamie O'Connell
