  6. The Newton has a lot of potential, but the recognition dictionary in the first
  7. versions is appalling. Having to use the soft-keyboard to type stuff in all
  8. the time is a drag. And then it asks you if you want to add the word to the
  9. User Dictionary as well! This really gets in the way. AddToDict is a small
  10. Newton application that allows multiple additions to your User Dictionary in
  11. one sitting.

  13. Expect to see major improvements in the future, but here is what it is for now.

  16. Installation:

  18. Manually remove any copies of AddToDict's previous incarnation, "AddUserDict."
  19. Send the package file down to the Newton with your Connection Kit.
  20. -That's it.
  21. To install the sample word lists; open your backup Notes files with Connection
  22. Kit, create a new Note and paste it the sample word list. Connection Kit should
  23. break it up into more than one note if it is too big. (You may have to do this
  24. by hand.) Synchronize your Newton. Now use the Newton 'Clipboard' feature to get
  25. the text into AddToDict (see below.)

  28. How It Works:

  30. Launch the application from the Extras Drawer. Tap on the Keyboard button to
  31. bring up the keyboard. Key in the words you wish to add to your User Dictionary
  32. into the text field and hit the button. It's as simple as that.

  34. You can try to write VERY neatly (as the recognition dictionary is turned off in
  35. the field) or, as I suggest, use the keyboard.

  37. When you tap the "Add them to the Dictionary" button, you will hear two kinds
  38. of sounds. The high-pitched 'ping' means a successful addition. The beep sound
  39. (set in your preferences) means that the word was not added -probably because
  40. it was already there.

  42. * Warning: 
  43. - Any punctuation or numbers will go in, so make careful lists.
  44.  
  45. Even better, you can paste large lists into the field.  Try importing a list of
  46. words into your Notes using the Connection Kit. Once you have it in Notes,
  47. select the text, drag it to the side of the screen so that it goes into the
  48. Clipboard. Next launch AddToDict and drag the clip back out. Then just hit the
  49. button. This saves a lot of soft-keyboard tapping.

  51. For long lists, the sounds can cause a racket, so you can turn them off with the
  52. checkbox at the bottom of AddToDict.

  54. Clicking on the button to the right of the Keyboard button brings up the User
  55. Dictionary editing window. Use this to review your User list and remove
  56. unwanted words.

  58. The Save button saves your word list to the permanent soup. Your word lists will
  59. then be retained over Restarts. There is though a limit to how many words the User
  60. Dictionary will take. Exact figures are not out, but it is about 2000. When you reach
  61. the limit any future atempts to save will give you a memory error. You can continue
  62. to add words to the User Dictionary so long as you don't save. They will be usable
  63. until you Restart.

  66. - On such memory errors you will be asked if you want to Restart. You do not have to as
  67. nothing is broken. Just cancel and go on your merry way. This is the best I can do
  68. while relying on the in-built way of doing things. Expect to see entirely new dictionaries
  69. in soups soon.

  74. The word lists included with AddToDict are just random samples, but are still useful.
  75. For massive methodical word lists by categories, register your copy at the address below.

  80. UserToDict is FreeWare, but it is also supported. I have prepared some large
  81. word list ready to add into your User Dictionary. There are lists of proper nouns,
  82. computer words and Japanese related words (including places, people and companies)
  83. each in the thousands of words. There is also a large dictionary coming, larger than
  84. the dictionary that comes with the Newton itself.

  87. Send US$10 and you will receive the latest version of AddToDict and all the lists I have
  88. ready. I was accepting checks until I found out it costs me about US$25 to have them cashed.
  89. Just throw a $10 note in an envelope. If you must send a check, I will just have to wait
  90. until I am in the US to cash it.

  93. Expect to see new features coming soon including: an Assist feature; previewing;
  94. deleting; printing; custom dictionary soups; direct import from Excel,
  95. dictionary program or your local mainframe. I will have some more useful word
  96. lists prepared soon including some specialized ones such as medical terms or
  97. even NewtonScript.
