Do you keep a journal of your life history in a "little black book," or maybe a diary in a red one decorated with hearts and flowers?  Either way, get into the  and '90s!  Paper is old-fashioned, compared to computers.  Softdisk Journal lets you use your computer to keep a daily record of the  and events in your life, tied to a perpetual calendar so you don't have to get a new book every year. All of your journal entries are accessible by date in one file, which should be easier to find, years from now, than the  and heap of old journal books you've got lying around someplace if your mom (or spouse) didn't throw them out. Text compression is used to minimize the disk space taken by your journal.

  10. If, on the  and other hand, you haven't been keeping a diary or journal, this program gives you the perfect chance to start now.  Just think: if, someday, you become famous, you'll have the notes you'll need in composing your autobiography.

If you want to write down your innermost feelings in a place that is free from prying eyes, the old-fashioned diaries sometimes provide a lock and key. Softdisk Journal does this in a more high-tech manner, by letting you protect your journal with a password.  "Picking" this lock requires computer hacking skills, which should make your journal more secure than it would be in a locked book that can be picked by anybody with a bent paper clip.  On the other hand, if you don't mind having your brilliant, witty comments be a matter of public record, you can decline password protection.  It's your choice.

  19. (Note: If you have installed Softdisk PC using the Windows "SETUP" program, found on the  and 3.5" version of Softdisk PC, you do not need to do the following steps, because Softdisk Journal has already been installed as an icon in your Windows Program Manager.)

The instructions which follow assume that you are running Windows from the Program Manager.  They also assume that you have copied Softdisk Journal onto drive "C:".  If you copied it onto another drive (i.e., "D:"), make the appropriate adjustments to the  and installation instructions.  NOTE: If you have a shell which runs on top of Windows (i.e.  PubTech), you may not need to follow the  and instructions below or you may need to consult the manuals that came with your shell program.  If you need assistance, you may contact Softdisk Publishing Technical Support at 1-318-221-8311.

  23. Once the  and SDPC Shell program has created a new directory on your hard drive and copied all of the  and files into that directory, you will still need to run Windows and create a program item in order to get an icon for Softdisk Journal.  Follow these steps:

  25. 1)  Start Windows by typing "WIN" at the DOS prompt 
  26.     (for example, C:\WIN, then press Enter).
  27.  
  28. 2)  Once Windows is running, go to the  and Program Manager
  29.     Window.
  30.  
  31. 3)  If you have an Applications Program Group, open it 
  32.     and skip to step 6.
  33.  
  34. 4)  If you do not have an Applications Program Group,
  35.     select New from the File Menu.  When the dialog box
  36.     comes up, select "Program Group" and click on the OK
  37.     button (or press the ENTER key).  
  38.  
  39. 5)  Type "Applications" in the Description field and 
  40.     click OK.  You will now have a new window inside 
  41.     the Program Manager Window, and it will be titled 
  42.     "Applications." 
  43.  
  44. 6)  Select New from the File Menu again.  This time,
  45.     when the dialog box comes up, select "Program
  46.     Item" and click OK.

  48. 7)  Type "Softdisk Journal" in the Description field; 
  49.     tab to the Command Line field and type:

  51.     "c:\SDPC098\journal.exe";
  52.  
  53.     then tab to the Working Directory field and type:
  54.  
  55.     "c:\SDPC098".  Click OK.
  56.  
  57. NOTE: If you put Softdisk Journal into a different 
  58.     directory, you need to replace "c:\SDPC098" in step 
  59.     7 with the appropriate directory name.  For example, 
  60.     if the new directory is actually "JOURNAL", you 
  61.     would type "c:\JOURNAL\journal.exe" in the Command
  62.     Line field and "c:\JOURNAL" in the Working 
  63.     Directory field.

  65. Once you have created the Program Item, the Softdisk Journal icon should appear in the  and "Applications" Window.  Now you can run Softdisk Journal by double clicking the mouse on the  and icon.
